He must have worked at Benchmade. The slinder knife he mentioned was the Benchmade 940 Osborne (designed by Warren Osborne from Australia).

Really appreciate the beefy hardware upgrades over the original, and the 7 abrasive and finishing stones kit was really well thought out. GREAT INTERVIEW! Love this. As someone who's thinking about getting into sharpening to keep up my own knives, it really gives me a lot to think about and makes me feel much more comfortable about getting into sharpening. I've never been a knife guy but I'm starting to really appreciate the differences and recently picked up some ultra sharp steak knives and I LOVE THEM. Now I'm starting to see how dull ALL my blades are and I don't want to pay a fortune for sharpening. I'd rather do it myself AND maybe start shopping for a really good personal carry knife. This video removes a LOT of the "dark arts" around sharpening....would LOVE to see more and really dive deep for beginners. Thanks for this and I'm looking forward to more of y'all vids.

Awesome video. I often tell people that factory edges are just adequate, and once you start sharpening with any competency, especially custom regrinds and mirror polished edges with lapping film and/or low micron emulsions, you will never look back

It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.

I don’t have a power system but have a backpack workshop sharpener and table top workshop with the tilting top. Sounds like her worked for Buck knives! I’ve had knives that came to me with burrs and the recommended angle I sometimes change. Like a kershaw knife. I call them kershaw sharp and rework the edge. When I strop the knife I use a diamond paste, however it tends to make the leather smooth and I use a piece of scrap metal and scrape it. Would you recommend using the paste or strop them without the paste? I have a bench model workshop manual sharpener. As you move knives over the diamond plates the table tilts as you get closer to the tip. 1 thing that I ordered but never received is the strop plate, I have the ceramic bar that pops into the sharpener.

I use a tripod or camera bubble to keep my blade level. I tape several on each side of the blade and it help keep my hands level as I pass. Since using this method my edges turn out awesome on the KO grinder system

I have the Precision Adjust, my question is about aligning the edge. Every video says to align the edge perpendicular to the rod. So, if the blade is curved how do we do that? Would a straight line from the tip to the heel be a good way to find where to align the clamp?

Regarding the Ken Onion grinder attachment: is it better to do one pass on each side or is it okay to do multiple passes on one side and then the same amount on the other side? What gives better results?

I can answer this one for you. When you are sharpening, you want to work on the same side of the blade until you fully develop a Burr on that side of the blade and keep track of how many passes It was. Then turn the blade over and do the same amount of passes on the that side to keep the bevel even. After that process, you are just going through the different grit belts alternating sides each pass until you worked out the previous belts scratch pattern. And you will just repeat that same process on every belt until you get it as fine as you would like. And then I would highly recommend using a leather strop. Once you do all that, I don't care what tool it is it could be a log splitting maul and it will be hair popping sharp.

Kyle is great.. I’d love to see him actually use the grinder attachment to sharpen some popular knives.. I also have a specific question. I bought an OTF with a double edge and would like to remove the top edge making it a single edge..Can I do this with the coursest (120) belt? I’d seriously dull the edge first with a file or a rock…Also I own a couple Tops knives that can’t throw a spark.. can I just flatten a belt width area of the top with the grinder attachment?

Yes how easy to sharpen a steel is important to me. I am buying magnacut more often and leaning away from 20cv because of the hard time I have sharpening 20cv. I would love to see knife steels with good edge retention but still not terribly hard to sharpen

The best investment i have made for knife sharpening is the ken onion sharpener but i rarely use it because once i have set an angle i use a ceramic rod and a strop to maintain my edges, I use a cheapo chef knife(400 series steel) daily and just honing and stropping before every day for a few seconds gets it shaving sharp and tears free when i cut onions

Essentially you want to apex the blade on the first belt. That’s the only way to get a blade sharp. Then every belt after till the strop.

You can burn the edge long before it turns color, and the same is true for being warm to the touch. What you have to worry about is the temperature within a millimeter of the edge, which can heat up very quickly. Most factory edges are burned to a degree. Edge retention will improve after a new knife is resharpened two, three, or four times.

Exactly, which is why dry belts really shouldn't be used to sharpen knife blades. I should add that the exception is a water cooled variable speed 2x72 belt sander. 600, 1000 grit then leather strop with white paste.

I’ve watched many of your videos. You promote the fact that your belt grinders sharpen to a convex edge. I see the benefits of a convex edge. I’ve yet to see anyone sharpening a a blade with no secondary edge, a knife with a full convex blade that has no secondary edge, it’s convex for the full height of the blade right to the edge. I’d like to see a demonstration.

Next they need to hire someone in customer service who cares to respond to emails. I've emailed 3 times about issues with the belts splitting at the seam and the black alignment knob developing a looseness that makes it very hard to get a belt tracking correctly.. As usual a companies success has them more concerned with profits and not those who purchased their products.

Sharpening has to be a true gift. I've tried the $1000.00 models Tormek T8 down to the lower lansky models and cannot find that polished hair shaving edge that I want. I would be willing pay for a one on one zoom class whim to help me figure out what I'm doing wrong. Fantastic video and very informative. Thank you

Hair shaving isn’t hard… you’re probably creating a burr or not fully removing the existing burr. Just really make sure to deburr properly and knife should be good to go

As a toolmaker with 20 years of experience i'm so sick and tired of free hand sharpening drill bits, knives etc. that i bought a used Deckel grinder and would never want to miss it again. Try to grind a carbide drill bit with your diamond wheel free handed and you know what i mean. I generally just buy carbide even if it's standard sizes since 3 years, and a guided grinder is a must.

Can you address when to hone vs sharpen. I find people go right to sharpening when they probably should use a honing steel instead. D2, S30v, etc…

Yep, its good to make a habit out of honing regularly to prevent the need to sharpen as often. A ceramic honing rod like the one on our Guided Field Sharpener works great for this and helps you build the muscle memory when it does come time to sharpen. Better quality steels like the ones you mention respond well to honing too.

i would like a demonstration of sharpening a small axe or hatchet.....work sharp looks like it would give a good convex edge.....can't do that with a wicked edge. only complaint I would have is more grit choices. wicked edge wins out on that one. Anyway, i'm thinking of adding a work sharp to my sharpening "collection just for convex edges. Might be good for other edges too, I would have to work with one to see. Go BENCHMADE!
