I just purchased the Ken Onion Edition. I have a Bubba Blade , 10", filet knife that I have not been able to get the sharpness that is required to filet large satwater fish that I catch. Using the Work Sharp Ken Onion starting with the X65 Belt at low to medimum speed, the knife took shape. After following the instructions of 6 to 10 pulls of the knife I switched to the X22 Belt and again followed the instructions.I then moved on to the X4 and did what the instructions told me to do. Wow, my filet knife is sharp and usable for the first time. Can't wait to get all my knives in tip top shape. Thank you Work Sharp for the best sharping tool that I have ever used. All of my settings for the filet knife were set at 20 degrees.

I own this Worksharp Elite system, and had a 3 hour “learning” period where I was just butchering my knives. Now I am consistently putting on a sharp edge. What’s great about this video, and product, is now I have the confidence to build my own knives from blanks, without a expensive professional sharpening system. It’s powerful AND versatile.

Does the elite system still come with the original Ken Onion system with the guides?? I definitely want both for the variety of knives and axes I own. @@tedblackburn8679 I know your comment is a year old but I'm just getting to know my new system. Maybe someone else has the same issue i do. What I did after an hour trying to free hand was that I built a stand for my blade to rest on. I've been sick and meds got me shakey so it was out of necessity . Just last week I did a horrible job on the point of an old custom Camillus Mk2 knife that a previous owner had expertly modified into a spear point, and I felt sick to my stomach when I trashed it while attempting to sharpen it. After watching this, I am optimistic. I just ordered the Blade Grinding Attachment and some belts to upgrade my KO Work Sharp kit. There is a small learning curve but once you get the hang of it you'll be able to get a razor sharp edge and keep it razor sharp with ease. Let the burr form! Once you get the burr, it's simply a matter of reducing the burr down to a polished edge. I have several sharpening systems but this one is my favorite.

They are not professionals , they don't even know that a knife has 2 edges , primary and secondary its knives 101 . When you sharpen you knife , you make a v sharp edge , ok , as time goes on that v shape will become duller , because you did not address the bigger secondary V edge , not all knives have it but most kitchen knives do . If you want to do it like this , im sure you have motor , make a wooden disk , take some abrasive paste and do it that way . you never have to buy or make belts , one tube of abrasive will hold you for who know couple years . But that is not the best way to do it , because again you address only the tip of the knife , or the primary edge you do not address the secondary edge that is equally as important . Do you know why Razor is so sharp , because its thin , once you start eating away in to your knife your edge will become fatter and fatter because you did not thin it down when you sharpened the primary edge .

I have a question. Keeping the blade level when sharpening is quite important. It seems there is room for error when you only have a removed ‘reference’ flat surface. I understand that there are many different styles of knives and it might be hard to have a “one size fits all” but for most skinning, filet, butcher and pocket knives, it would probably do wonders. Would you make an attachment for the elite sharpener that you can actually lay the knife blade on while you drag it across the belt so as to ensure that it stays level?

I have had this Ken Onion edition knife sharpener for 2 to 3 years. I read the instruction manual about forming the bur, setting the angle, etc - but somehow I missed that I am supposed to be sharpening the knife on the top portion of the belt. With the angle set - intuitively - it seems that is was meant to bring the knife directly to the belt from the flat plate. The angles made no sense!. So, I essentially just went to winging it on the top belt at my own angle. I have not yet been able to get a knife razor sharp and was about to give up on this machine. I am very glad that I watched the video. I can go back to my sharpener and use it as intended and see if I can get that razor edge. As a side note, the work sharp chisel sharpener with the round plates is OUTSTANDING. My chisels are always razor sharp, slicing off end grain with ease. I have mostly been honing my knives on the top of the wheel. I have 2 leather hone attachments for different grits. This works really great on the left side of the knife. The right side is a challenge and I have cut many a sanding disk cutting the left side. Only use it to hone now. Still the knife will ultimately make some kind of cut in the leather and that will catch when right side sharpening. I was thinking modifying with a swift to reverse polarity as this machine was the only one that would get my knives truly sharp. After watching the tutorial I will definitely go back to the knife sharpener and give it another chance. Does anyone have any recommendations for knife honing polish. I have a green bar that seems to work well. I have read (on the advertisement) that you should start with the white bar first, then the green bar to finish - if you are looking for a shiny edge. I still love the feeling to passing a tool across a good stone, but the machines are so much fasters.

Even on the Ken onion system I think it's important to pull the blade off the belt when the tip reaches the middle and not pull it all the way through the system glad to see that you're teaching that on this new grinder they should redo the instructions for the regular Ken onion on that point.

I would love to see more about the knife making process, especially the grinding part. The only reason that I would think to get a BGA would be to either thin out blade grinds or to bring up the blade finish to a higher grit.

Fantastic! I've have wanted to begin making some knives, but I live in an apartment, no workshop, so maybe this is a place to start!

Kyle, that was an awesome explanation of the Elite system! I have been using mine since this summer and wish this had been out earlier--it would have shortened my learning curve and saved some trial and error. I learned quite a lot from your clear, and concise explanation. Your passion for your craft really comes through. My one question is that aside from using the stiff belt kit, is there a way to get a flatter grind on my knife than the convex grind inherit in the slack belt system? I am thinking of either some tips or suggestions you might have for the current system, or perhaps some refinements or additional features for a Blade Grinding Attachment v2.0. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

I wish I could give double thumbs up! Excellent video with so much insight. And I love watching glint of the burr forming along the edge as I move the blade across.

Thanks for the video..freehand adjust and go to belt with free hand with belt that bends when sharpening. ...good luck. Thanks for the sample.

I'm in the market for a power sharpener right now. As of now I think I'm sold on the Ken onion kit. O especially love that I can use stropping belts with it. 😁🇺🇲

Just picked up my WSKO Elite and blade grinder attachment and extra belts about a week ago. I have been practicing on Sam's Club white handles knives we have had in the kitchen and even reprofiled one as they are all single bevel knives with one flat side. I have watched more than a few videos and yours is the best yet. I would ask where do you get your raw blades and handle materials? Thanks for sharing your "tricks".

@worksharpoutdoors I have the Ken onion elite with the attachment. It would be super nice if there was a flat guide attached to the grinder to hold the knife flat. So you’re not holding the knife in mid air. Something to set the knife on while the edge hung over to rest against the belt.
