I just purchased the Ken Onion Edition. I have a Bubba Blade , 10", filet knife that I have not been able to get the sharpness that is required to filet large satwater fish that I catch. Using the Work Sharp Ken Onion starting with the X65 Belt at low to medimum speed, the knife took shape. After following the instructions of 6 to 10 pulls of the knife I switched to the X22 Belt and again followed the instructions.I then moved on to the X4 and did what the instructions told me to do. Wow, my filet knife is sharp and usable for the first time. Can't wait to get all my knives in tip top shape. Thank you Work Sharp for the best sharping tool that I have ever used. All of my settings for the filet knife were set at 20 degrees.

Brand Manager Kyle Crawford ought to appear more often in these videos and present his tips and tricks, and especially so on his own special builds. Crawford is all business without any silly drama. I would like to see what knife designs he comes up with using blanks found on store shelves.

I will be getting one of these. I’ve always sharpened on an oilstone for my pocket knives, I noticed when people borrowed my knife at work they always respected how sharp it was. I took a pride in that. But this system is another level entirely. 👍🇬🇧

I own this Worksharp Elite system, and had a 3 hour “learning” period where I was just butchering my knives. Now I am consistently putting on a sharp edge. What’s great about this video, and product, is now I have the confidence to build my own knives from blanks, without a expensive professional sharpening system. It’s powerful AND versatile.

Does the elite system still come with the original Ken Onion system with the guides?? I definitely want both for the variety of knives and axes I own. If it does I'm definitely going to buy this system. I just want to make sure it comes with both setups. The original Ken Onion with the guides, and the elite system that you do free hand. If you could let me know I'd greatly appreciate it!!

@@tedblackburn8679 I know your comment is a year old but I'm just getting to know my new system. Maybe someone else has the same issue i do. What I did after an hour trying to free hand was that I built a stand for my blade to rest on. I've been sick and meds got me shakey so it was out of necessity . I just bent over some 1" AL corner and some tap screws and BAM I have steady hands all the time. Two screws release my stand when need be. I wonder why they didn't supply something so simple?

I learned about Work sharp thru Derrix (not spelled right). I bought a drill doctor and it saved my shop a boatload of money, I highly recommend it. I started with the original sharpener, than I bought the Ken Onion model than I bought the grinder attachment for it. I love all of them. Unless a blade is seriously messed up I can have it slicing paper and shaving hair in 10 minutes or less, usually less. Oh ya, great video guys.

That's exactly the video I needed. I have butchered (pun intended) a couple knives lately and this will really help me fix the error in my ways...and the knives. Just last week I did a horrible job on the point of an old custom Camillus Mk2 knife that a previous owner had expertly modified into a spear point, and I felt sick to my stomach when I trashed it while attempting to sharpen it. After watching this, I am optimistic. I just ordered the Blade Grinding Attachment and some belts to upgrade my KO Work Sharp kit. I just learned a ton of much needed knowledge and I am definitely going to watch this again. Can't wait to get started with the new attachment, get some much needed practice and confidence, and fix my Mk2 spear point! Thanks very much!

I love my blade grinding attachment! I've given several as gifts to friends as gifts. I use it almost almost exclusively for all my knives. There is a small learning curve but once you get the hang of it you'll be able to get a razor sharp edge and keep it razor sharp with ease. Let the burr form! Once you get the burr, it's simply a matter of reducing the burr down to a polished edge. I have several sharpening systems but this one is my favorite.

Very few limitations, hours and hours and hours saved with superior results. After you "figure it out", it will take your blades to infinity and beyond, lol. They are not professionals , they don't even know that a knife has 2 edges , primary and secondary its knives 101 . When you sharpen you knife , you make a v sharp edge , ok , as time goes on that v shape will become duller , because you did not address the bigger secondary V edge , not all knives have it but most kitchen knives do . If you want to do it like this , im sure you have motor , make a wooden disk , take some abrasive paste and do it that way . you never have to buy or make belts , one tube of abrasive will hold you for who know couple years . But that is not the best way to do it , because again you address only the tip of the knife , or the primary edge you do not address the secondary edge that is equally as important . Do you know why Razor is so sharp , because its thin , once you start eating away in to your knife your edge will become fatter and fatter because you did not thin it down when you sharpened the primary edge .

I have had this Ken Onion edition knife sharpener for 2 to 3 years. I read the instruction manual about forming the bur, setting the angle, etc - but somehow I missed that I am supposed to be sharpening the knife on the top portion of the belt. With the angle set - intuitively - it seems that is was meant to bring the knife directly to the belt from the flat plate. The angles made no sense!. So, I essentially just went to winging it on the top belt at my own angle. I have not yet been able to get a knife razor sharp and was about to give up on this machine. I am very glad that I watched the video. I can go back to my sharpener and use it as intended and see if I can get that razor edge. As a side note, the work sharp chisel sharpener with the round plates is OUTSTANDING. My chisels are always razor sharp, slicing off end grain with ease. I have mostly been honing my knives on the top of the wheel. I have 2 leather hone attachments for different grits. This works really great on the left side of the knife. The right side is a challenge and I have cut many a sanding disk cutting the left side. Only use it to hone now. Still the knife will ultimately make some kind of cut in the leather and that will catch when right side sharpening. I was thinking modifying with a swift to reverse polarity as this machine was the only one that would get my knives truly sharp. After watching the tutorial I will definitely go back to the knife sharpener and give it another chance. Does anyone have any recommendations for knife honing polish. I have a green bar that seems to work well. I have read (on the advertisement) that you should start with the white bar first, then the green bar to finish - if you are looking for a shiny edge. I still love the feeling to passing a tool across a good stone, but the machines are so much fasters.

I especially enjoyed the part where you show about making knives and just playing around with the machine and getting to know it. I have recently purchased the Elite kit and I have yet to play with the blade grinder attachment because I haven’t read the manual I just started playing with the Ken Onion machine because it was less intimidating. But after watching your video I’m going to break it out tomorrow and get to know my machine. I have always been a knife collector and tried many different sharpening systems that I did not care for because it took too long. But with this Ken Onion Elite, I have found my love for sharpening knives. It is quick and easy to use. I have a question. Keeping the blade level when sharpening is quite important. It seems there is room for error when you only have a removed ‘reference’ flat surface. I understand that there are many different styles of knives and it might be hard to have a “one size fits all” but for most skinning, filet, butcher and pocket knives, it would probably do wonders. Would you make an attachment for the elite sharpener that you can actually lay the knife blade on while you drag it across the belt so as to ensure that it stays level?

@jake sauce… not really. It doesn’t hold your angle as you sharpen the blade.

@jake sauce interesting, because I contacted work sharp tools directly and they told me that such a thing did not exist and they had no intention of incorporating it.

I use a magnetic bubble level that I attach to the knife to ensure a level blade while sharpening. Works even better on axes to ensure an equal grind side to side.

I would love to see more about the knife making process, especially the grinding part. The only reason that I would think to get a BGA would be to either thin out blade grinds or to bring up the blade finish to a higher grit.

@worksharpoutdoors I have the Ken onion elite with the attachment. It would be super nice if there was a flat guide attached to the grinder to hold the knife flat. So you’re not holding the knife in mid air. Something to set the knife on while the edge hung over to rest against the belt.

I'm really considering buying this knife sharpener for my bigger knives like my Tops knives Skullcrusher, and Tom Brown Tracker. I can't find anything else that will not only sharpen such thick knives, but also the angles of those knives. My only question is does this elite version include the original Ken Onion system with the guides? I definitely want both systems to do the variety of knives I own. It seems this package does include the original Ken Onion. But I wanted to make sure before I make the purchase. If you guys could let me know I'd appreciate it! Also anyone else that knows. If you could respond to this comment I would greatly appreciate it!!!

Even on the Ken onion system I think it's important to pull the blade off the belt when the tip reaches the middle and not pull it all the way through the system glad to see that you're teaching that on this new grinder they should redo the instructions for the regular Ken onion on that point.

You should make a guide/platform for the blade grinding attachment. For machetes and swords/sabres. Something that tilts too. For thicker swords .

Does the elite system still come with the original Ken Onion system with the guides?? I want to use the elite system for my bigger knives and axes. But the original Ken Onion system with the guides would be great for my smaller knives. If it comes with both I'm definitely buying one! If you could let me know I'd greatly appreciate it!!

Question. So I recently ordered the Ken Onion Elite and I am very excited to receive and start practicing on it. As I wait for it to arrive, I'm curious. Once my blade edges have been converted to convex, can I still sharpen on a stone (as I still enjoy the process and convenience)? Or does going back and forth continously change the edge profile and excessively wear down the blade? If this has been covered in another video please refer me to it as I have not come across it.
