A few weeks ago, I expanded my old workshop so as to fit an upcoming layout build in it. This week, I will continue the process of getting things organized so that I am ready to start.
If you are in the market for a custom model railroad design and/or build, please contact me at: www.superiormo...

Oooooo! Getting ready for a new build. Very exciting. I very much like the thought of having all your tools and supplies spread out on shelves, so you can locate them quickly. Just like an operating room. “ Zeus, hand me the jig saw!” Awesome. Looking forward to the beginning of this build. Take care. See ya.

... except that Zeus doesn't have hands. "Zeus, paw me the jig-saw" doesn't really sound the same. More like "Zeus, quit chewing my hammer".

From some of your earlier comments when you were taking out the wall I gather that this shop will soon be history.
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 3 жыл бұрын
@@mpetersen6 No it will remain, but it will be relegated to a secondary shop or storage area. The main shop will be a nice 2400sf and form part of a fenced enclosure for the dogs so they can be out there with me all the time without needing to be on ropes.

Yes, as soon as I get confirmation on the actual room size (as opposed to the theoretical room size from the architect's plans), the real fun can start.

The woofers are "supervising" Peter. They have to make sure Dad doesn't make any mistakes or get hurt. I had a couple that always made sure of that as well!!

It's always best to have a nice clean and organized work area to start a new project - even though it probably won't stay that way for long.
@mpetersen6
@mpetersen6 3 жыл бұрын
If a workshop stays perfectly neat and organized theres not much work getting done. But it is easier to put items away and at least keep ones head above water than let it all go until the end.

Not gonna lie, I’d watch 8 hour live streams of builds this size in progress. Wouldn’t even need talking - just watch the work being done. Probably speed up a bit, or just have them on in the back ground.
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 3 жыл бұрын
Well, don't expect any 8-hr videos, although I do plan on getting the entire process on time-lapse for a weekly update.
@nickcoles518
@nickcoles518 3 жыл бұрын
@@mpeterll that would be awesome, I love a good time lapse too. I’m one of those weirdo’s that could watch welding videos for hours on end, just appreciating the workmanship and could see this would be similar- but I can also imagine a camera over your shoulder constantly on the go would get irksome! Looking forward to it taking shape. That’s for sharing.

One thing I really do like about that type of shelving. The ease of reconfiguring it to match changing needs in terms of height seperation. Iusualy put Masonite end caps on and notch the inside edge so that it buts up against the wall. I also think they are a clean and quick solution to supporting along the wall bench work.

These were originally used to support my railroad in my previous house (although with their 19" brackets).

I have used tons of those shelving brackets. I did choose to use cabinet mounting screws to hold them to the wall.
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 3 жыл бұрын
Any kind of screw with a bigger head (or washers) avoids the problem of the head pulling through, at the risk of possibly having the screw head in the way of a bracket.

My pit-bull is definitely a full-sized one (80lb and really solid). He bosses the doberman about on occasion. Of course,they both think they are lap dogs.

Yes I do need more light. These tubes are repurposed from lighting my railroad in my previous house. I've heard a lot of good things about LED lighting and will probably go that route.

What lumber did you use as the baseboards, is it pine, what width? Assume they’re affixed to the concrete of foundation. It looks great, might do that myself.
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't build this shop, nor install the baseboards, but they are 1x8 pine.

Did you ever get a contractor to respond for your 40' x 60' shop build? Is that in the near or distant future? Do you think that sealing the concrete floor or painting it white would help control moisture in the room while you build the layout, or give you the ability to mark a grid down, to aid in setting up your layout builds?
@mpeterll
@mpeterll 3 жыл бұрын
No-one responded to that video and I've really struggled to find a contractor. I think I may have one now though. Interesting idea about the floor grid, although I'm not sure if it would be worth it as once I've built one section of a layout, I can always use that as a reference point to measure everything else from.
