I'm just a homeowner with a damp basement, but everything I've read says that you need to have a way to get the moisture out of those walls. We did an interior dimple board barrier so that we could separate the framing from the brick walls but still suck the moisture out with a dehumidifier. This looks like the equivalent of putting your foundation in a ziplock bag, but maybe I'm wrong.

Drylok he applied on his walls plus creating a positive grade away from building will make the amount of moisture in his building negligible. If you have a basement that is either fully below grade or the section that is below grade with a negative slope towards basement then you would definitely need exterior drainage to let water perc away from the building and air gaps in the interior to allow circulation.

There's also the possibility of adding a French drain or weeping tile drain system against the exterior of the block foundation, since they can easily gravity drain towards the front of the building.

That’s the plan, positive drainage and potentially some kind of French drain or drain tile should take care of it.

I’m only at minute 3 but wondering if smaller windows with outdoor blinds would have helped. Im a content creator for brands and I’m rebuilding my shop too, right now I only have one window, the other one i swapped it for a wall Ac and I miss natural light a lot. I understand the benefits of controlling the environment but natural light is so soothing to work with (at least to me). Big fan of the series

I think the wooden buttresses are there because the retaining wall is tilted. So as a safety measurement the previous tenant/owner installed these triangular walls against the concrete part of the exterior wall. If I had to tackle this problem I would build a couple or three buttresses along this wall but made out of concrete just protruding 80 cms (30 inches) from the surface of this wall

another reason for getting rid of the windows is, a massive reduction of spider webs, i built a 40 x 30 x10 foot garage, and no windows I think there are about 3 small spiderwebs in the whole garage in the 6 years since it was built

You could’ve framed those walls on the ground and stood them up, since the studs and two plates are 1.5” shorter than the overall due to the double top plate (which is literally not doing anything). Just nail the upper top plate to the bottom of the joists, frame the wall, then stand it up and slide it under the upper top plate. If it’s tight, coerce it with a nine pound hammer. I’m surprised Jason didn’t suggest that

That would assume the slab is perfectly flat, and it’s far from it. I think this was a lot simpler considering we would have had to done a lot of planing and scribing to fit the walls.

08:20 The structural engineer probably called for a double top plate because the building is old and the joists would probably not line up with the studs which would cause load transfer issues (sagging). A double top plate solves this by distributing whatever falls on the upper top plate across the lower top plate evenly. Could be wrong but this is my guess

Really enjoy your videos. Just a point. If you are getting moisture on that back wall. All that plastic sheet is going to do is condense it and it will collect in the floor and rot the base of your stud wall. It needs airflow.

There's no actual water coming in, mostly just trying to help with humidity. This is a vapor retarder, meaning moisture can still permeate, it just does so more slowly.

It shouldn't encourage mold, as this is a vapor retarder, meaning it just slows the transmission of moisture. Completely blocking it would likely lead to mold.

What type of sealant was used on heater vent pipe hole and around window framing plates? Just silicone?

The pipe hole was Lexel and the framing plates was Titebond Duramaster.

I could have done a lot of things to filter the light, but it's next to impossible to buy windows in a reasonable time frame right now, so I went this route.
