I wasn't aware that Proxxon tools were sold here in Canada but a quick search tells me that they're available at Home Depot. I'll have to give them a look. I quite like the Fireball XL5 calendar, reminds me of my youth on Saturday mornings. "OK Venus....OK Steve, let's go!"

Over here in the US we pronounce "router" the same way for any application, we differentiate by the context or by adding a descriptive word, like "Cable or plunge etc.". That said; I don't care how you pronounce words, call things by different names (I.E. engineer versus machinist) or the terminology you use, like "fiddley bit". Really it becomes more interesting, to me, understanding your "British" differences. Being from the Northern part of the US and living in the Southern part, I had some differences to learn in my own country, so I pick up what you say easily, everyone else should too. What is important is the information you give us, your extensive knowledge about steam engines, and that wonderful dry humor you like to share. Never stop, don't change, and another great video for "beginners". ;-)

Not sure if anyone commented something similar but if you're cutting wood or any other material which likes to chip out and leave a burr on top, try getting a down-cut bit. They push the chips downward and do not leave a burr on the top.

Many years ago I had a Dremel set which included a router attachment similar to yours. It was very handy for jobs where my big routers were just too big to use. Since I no longer own a house I have given away or sold all of my power tools except for my small Porter Cable drill/driver which is still handy to have in an apartment like mine. I'm really jealous of people who can retire but still keep up with their hobbies. Luckily there are enough hobbyists like you on KZbin to watch and enjoy.

I had a Dremel once, but it didn't last very long and wore out quickly. I still use Dremel tools though, they are very good quality.

Cutting ply with a router will blunt the bits faster than solid wood as the glue they use in the ply tends to be harder than the wood and it also binds on the cutter making it hot that’s why it smokes ….it looks like a handy tool for a modeler ..

Interestingly, like the US, Australia uses the same pronunciation for both of these devices. The UK pronunciation for the Internet router (which is arguably more correct) is a homophone for something entirely different, or rather someone, who could be the subject of a girlfriend (or boyfriend) joke. 🤣 Greetings from Adelaide, Australia.

Hi Keith. You mentioned about the Hammond organ & Keith Emerson? Later, Keith joined with Greg Lake, & Carl Palmer to form ELP. Greg Lake was a friend of mine at Henry Harbin school in Poole. Also, I worked at the Kentucky Organ Company (part of Brocks) & was part of the electronic construction team on the models Challenger & Adventurer. If the technicians found any faults or mods needed, I used to repair them? Many thanks for your very interesting & informative vlogs. Kind regards.

I have the Dremel equivalent which also does the job for me. As you say, they do not get a lot of use but are handy when needed.

There are several very good hand router planes available these days, and many much cheaper ones. Some, like the Veritas, have a variety of cutting blades that can be switched out rapidly. They need knife scores to start the cutting to prevent tearout around the slot, but that's no real hardship. Advantages include no dust kicked up, very quiet operation, and a great deal more safety when used as there is no high-speed rotating razor edges to worry about or catch your clothing or hair in.

There are cutters available with reverse twist. The cutting action pushes the cutter in to the chuck and practically eliminates burrs. I don't know the proper name. Thanks again for the videos.

They are called down cut bit. They are made so you dont get a burr line in woodlike materials when you mill it. There are also up cut bits that you would use if you want to mill through a piece and make a clean burr free edge on the other side. The best is using a compression routing bit they are combined up and down cut bits that dont leave a burr regardless what side you route from. They are also made to cut a full depht slot at once.

I have some Proxxon tools too, drill, drill stand and crosstable, and a MF70 milling machine. And some bits and bobs that go with it like vises, clamps etc. The only brilliant machine is the MF70. For the rest I am generally not overly happy with the quality / accuracy of Proxxon. The term “excellent” would not come to my mind. It works….just. But for modelling purposes there very few alternatives. As you state: most machines are just too big. This router attachment seems to be no exception to the general mediocre quality of Proxxon. The drill mount slops around on its guides and this makes lowering the mill into the work a sloppy business making marks on either side of the slot in the wood. And there’s no aid (lever mechanism) to lower the mill decently into the wood. So yes, it works -ish. But then again for thirty pounds for an odd use you can’t complain. Thanks for the review.

I stand by my opinion of Proxxon motor tools, the "Micromot" drills are great, the Jigsaw is poor and I too have an MF70 which is OK for what it is, although I don't use it much.
