I bought the plans for these last week (after seeing your short on KZbin or Instagram) and used them to pump out a few last minute additions to my craft fair inventory last weekend. The plans worked like a charm, cleared out a few of my scraps that had been kicking around the shop, and were the first item to be sold at the fair. They generated more than enough to cover the cost of the plans and my vendor fee. Thanks!

Kudos to Travis for that jig. As I progress in woodworking, I’m becoming more impressed not by what woodworkers final products are, but all the jigs they come up with to solve problems along the way!

That's the name of the game. When we were building aircraft, the jigs for any one airplane took up almost as much storage space as the airplane itself.

Me too. Before Travis came up with that idea, I was clamping the beads in a hand, sanding a flat, marking the hole with an awl, and losing every other bead when one of those steps went wrong. I'm thinking of nominating his jig for the Simple Solutions Hall of Fame.

If you cover the wood with clear contact paper before gluing patterns. Makes cleanup a lot easier.
@WorkshopCompanion5 күн бұрын
The patterns aren't glued permanently. The spray adhesive I show is similar to rubber cement. The patterns peel right off.
@flyboy61b5 күн бұрын
@@WorkshopCompanion I've been using spray adhesive with patterns for many years. They don't peel off as easy as the contact paper. Not as important on a band saw, but it also acts to cool a scroll saw blade. I'm on my way to my shop right now to glue up some elf blanks. Got the instructions and full size patterns from your store.

I’m sure you already know or will soon find out that Poplar while it has that wonderful green color when it’s fresh cut will turn brown. The greener, the wood, the darker the brown. It won’t take very long for that to happen.
@WorkshopCompanion5 күн бұрын
This is true of all of the woods we work with. As wood surfaces are exposed to oxygen and UV light, the lighter woods get darker and to darker woods go gray. But at least through Christmas, the poplar will be green and the padauk will be red.

@brendat51446 күн бұрын
@@WorkshopCompanion How is the motor mounted? Just bolted to the shelf or is there some kind of mount? I would like to do this with my Shopsmith bandsaw.
@WorkshopCompanion5 күн бұрын
@@brendat5144 The stand is just a plywood box -- a storage cabinet with shelves and drawers. The motor is mounted directly under the top on a hinged board so the weight of the motor tensions the belt. The bandsaw rests in a old "SPT mount" that Shopsmith no longer makes, but you can still find on Ebay. Or you can just drill some holes in a 2x4 to hold the mounting tubes -- that works quite well and will save some bucks.

You could make an elf chess set -- Travis and I actually planned one out. But if you would like something more elegant, I published the plans for a compound-cut chess set in my book, "Using the Band Saw," on page 114. You can also use the patterns I show there to turn a chess set on the lathe, although you still have to compound-cut the upper part of the knight. See workshopcompanionstore.com/products/using-the-band-saw -- I actually show picture of the chess set there.
