I just setup the Dolos on a 7.5" 300 blackout. I got it as tight as I could without the handguard, then lined up the pic rail and installed the handguard. With the handguard on, I can get an extra click, which thrown the rail out of whack. If I just go to where the rails line up, i have a tiny (side to side) play on the handguard. I'm using a YHM hanguard with the jam nut... which is a perfect name for it, cause it's jammed on there and I can't get it off to readjust. I haven't shot it yet, but I'm going to tomorrow.

How did it perform at the range?
@H2OSensei
@H2OSensei 4 жыл бұрын
@@Tetsuo907 I had zero issues with it. It shot nicely and everything worked as intended. I've since was able to remove the handguard and readjust. Now it feels more solid. It's a great system. I also just learned that there's a "barrel lock" kit that makes the barrel unit more solid when its separated. Doesn't affect performance, but just keeps the unit together nicely.

The locking collar looseness is supposed to be taken care of with the set screws near the top rail.

Although those help, you definitely need to get that barrel nut tighter than any traditional barrel nut. which is made even more difficult by the lack of ability to put a torque wrench on it. loctite and crank that thing down is required.

Well, we didn't build a sub MOA gun, so i cant speak for that, but 1/4 scale silhouette hits at 100 yards were easy. The barrel nut isn't any looser than a standard one. actually, i'd say the opposite. That was the problem with loosening, i dont think i got it quite tight enough. The second time with a little loctite I got it quite a bit tighter. The barrel is still piloted in the same hole as it would be with a standard system, you can actually hear it lock into the pilot hole in the video. I'd say if you're running a 1.5" group out of a standard barrel system, you could still pull a sub 2" group out of this. I just dont think it's as rugged as a standard system. It's not something i'd put on a battle rifle, more of a niche rifle.

@@workthetrigger What a great, accurate response. I think I'm going to subscribe to your Channel!! I just bought a Dolos for my 7.5" build. I bought their experimental version called The Dolos Wedge. It was a bit cheaper, and I like the handguard better. I think they still have a few of those for sale. I have what I think is the coolest PDW brace on the market. It is made by Strike Industries. It's spring loaded. You just stick your thumb up and the brace shoots out like a stiletto. I freaking love it. They even managed to design it with a very good cheek weld. Something that HK extendable versions do NOT have!

Question when your barrel is locked in do you have any movement in the barrel or handguard just purchased the system an noticed i can slightly move the barrel an handguard. Thanks
@workthetrigger
@workthetrigger 7 жыл бұрын
Nope, barrel is rock solid on there. Did you purchase the kit and put the upper together yourself? Or did you buy the complete rifle? Also, which direction can you move it? does it spin, or move in and out of the upper? if it moves in and out, you may need to re-tighten the barrel nut. The first time I put it together, that nut loosened. I put some locktite on and really cranked it on (used a punch on one of the edges and gave it a good whacking) and it's been tight ever since.

I know you posted this a year ago, but I had this same problem and this is for anyone else who comes across this. What I ended up doing was hitting the lock collar with a strap wrench BEFORE putting the hand guard on it. I repeated this four or 5 times to get it over an extra click or so on the pawl. Barrel stopped moving and it was nice and snug.

benniebeeker whats your grouping like? I’m at over 2 inches at 36 yds with a 14.5 in barrel and I think that’s unacceptable... but this dolos system doesn’t have much traction when it comes to accuracy, I’m not looking for MOA but something reasonable
@victorgalvez927

how do you align the hand guard rail with the upper???
@workthetrigger
@workthetrigger 2 ай бұрын
the upper and rail only need aligned on the initial assembly to put the Dolos barrel nut on. When doing that, i'll typically use something like a half in riser, they're typically about 6" long, and span between the upper and rail. the more clamping locations the better. that'll line everything up for the initial assembly. After that, when you pu tthe fore-end back on, everything will line up. you just crank until it's lined up. since it ratchets shut, you'll see when the rail lines up, and it should stop at that point. if it doesn't, you didn't assemble it right.

Not sure, gun was built from scratch. Not converted. Accuracy was acceptable, but not exceedingly great. Repeatability seemed good. Design of the AR15 and how the barrel seats lends itself to good consistency and reliability as long as the barrel is seated well

@workthetrigger
@workthetrigger 7 жыл бұрын
+Vurkem Vurkem yes, you should be able to run that long of a barrel with it. Because the barrel Pilots into the receiver, the only thing that the system is doing is holding the barrel into the receiver. Again, I wouldn't bang it around much, but it should be able to hold the Barrel in well enough.

@workthetrigger

It's a free float hand guard, they're supposed to be that loose. improves accuracy. The biggest issue I have with rigidity of the system is that the barrel is only held to the receiver with essentially about 1/4 turn worth of super course threading.

what slots are you talking about? the slots on your rail? the rail could just be timed incorrectly. it's a little bit of a PITA to get everything timed right when you're putting this thing together.

I've had the same issue and reached out to one of the retailers that sells this unit. They suggested using the Yankee Hill Jam nut which you can see is equipped on the rifle in the video. They suggested the slots were just for ventilation and that those handguards aren't timed.

it's been a while since the build (i built it for someone else and went out and ran it through the ringer to make sure it functioned properly) but i dont believe so. Gotta remember the way AR barrels are fit, they've got a rather large pilot diameter and a timing pin, all this system does is holds the barrel in tight (which it does). there's no inward/outward movement, and because of that, no movement in other directions either.

you can break red locktite. you'd just need to use a strap wrench and crank on it. or heat it, loctite burns off.

They have excellent inexpensive heat guns on Amazon. I always have heat gun handy. I use one all the time for all sorts of things. Loctite removal, heat shrink tubing, Etc. I have had to use my heat gun even for BUE Loctite removal..... if the fastener is quite small. Otherwise, you can strip the head trying to remove them. I learned that the hard way. You can't afford not to have a heat gun. They just don't cost very much, and they are so useful.
