6. Rg1 is known as Freak Attack! :D It was played also during Tata Steel 2020 by Jorden van Foreest against Firouzja. Ian Gustafsson called this moves dumb at that time and Peter Svidler felt offended and explained how old idea it is... great to see it again! :D

Boys, if Nepo makes it to the championship match against Magnus, its going to be BY FAR the biggest challenge for the Norwegian whatsoever. Nepo is like a combination of good educated, well-calculating GM, and a paradoxial driven, creative, symmetric board loving mad machine. He can bring so much of the psychological discomfort to Magnus. And he is in his prime now, he likes to challenge and fight, no academic chess, he is way more dangerous than unstable prodigy Alireza or academic professor Grishuk, or even battle tank Maxim :)
@strong87054 жыл бұрын
You omitted important thing. Of course, his phenomenal speed. When someone presses on clock as well as on the board, psychological pressure mounts up. For me, constant pressure to catch up on the clock, or go slow is burdening additional decision.

At 6minute 16second,a takes b5 is possible since bishop guards the rook and also white will not be able to castle because rooks will be exchanged

Rg1 is such a bizarre move. I honestly had never seen it, but it is intriguing how it leads to crazy positions. Great game.

Darn I wish I could remember the ........ I remember...think an early ‘90s skit from a Live Saturday Night Show that spawned two very successful🍿Gems! Anyway, the saying from the second movie is: “You’re Handsome Dan🤢?” All that for 3 lousy words 😥 it was funny on Wayne’s World though!! Great vid King!

What a game by Nepo. Good defence by MC but he cracked in the end. Not easy to defend such a difficult position. Kudos to the Russian. Excellent analysis. King F1...

12:21 what happens if white does not take back the bishop and just moves the king? How to stop all those mate threats
@PowerPlayChess4 жыл бұрын
Let's say 21 Kf1 instead, then 21...gxf5 and there is no mate. In fact, Black is winning. Crucially the dark-squared bishop covers the h6 square so that after 22 Rh8+ Kg7 23 Qh6 is not mate...

21 moves! I know that Karpov lost to Christiansen in 12 moves in 1993, and Anand once lost a game in SIX moves, but has any other _reigning_ world champion ever lost such a short game? (Edit: obviously not counting the game that Carlsen threw to Ding to make up for when Ding went linkdead in a drawn position.)
@PowerPlayChess4 жыл бұрын
This is a rapid game so I don’t think it really counts. In the context of the match, and given Magnus’s challenging style, such disasters can occur. Nepo played his part too! What a talent. I have really enjoyed his participation in the tournament.
@tkokesh4 жыл бұрын
PowerPlayChess I have to admit, I rooted for Nepo from move one in this tournament. He has an aggressive “caveman” style that isn’t matched by any other top player nowadays.

Every chess commentator worth his salt enjoys it when the champion loses an interesting game. It keeps the field interesting. I don't think DK's coverage shows any particular preference for Carlsen beyond him being one of the strongest players ever.
