This is a 25 minute video with the highlights of the 1st Rubik's Cube World Championship, held in June 1982 in Budapest.
Unfortunately the quality is not very good.
Thanks to Pellepennan Aspelin for sending me the original video cassette!

Amazing how much speed cubing has changed. The amount of rotations alone... they constantly were looking around the cube and performing rotations decades ago. I love seeing these things to understand just how far we've come and all we've learned. And I'm still no where close to these times yet, and I have the luxury of using modern cubes designed for speed, with magnets and all that jazz. These people were going at it on the rough original Rubik's branded cubes. That alone is insane!

but understand that these are the best in the world back then so if they were transported with their skills to our modern equipment they would with practice be right around the wr as well. i solve a little faster than they do in the video but if I try to do the same thing they are doing i would be around 1 minute.

Fun fact: most of these guys learned their tricks on cubes with the "japanese color scheme" where blue is opposite white. However all the cubes in this competition had the modern color scheme where yellow is opposite white, meaning there's a fair chance a faster time could've been had if they were more used to the color scheme

They were also given new unbroken unmmoded cubes instead of theirs and if a cube popped in two solves in a row they'd be disqualified.

Couldn't help but notice the names Fridrich and Petrus were in this championship. They would each go on to have solving methods named after them (I think most speedcubers are familiar with the Fridrich method). Pretty interesting that they were both competing in this event.
