Such complex and interesting games. Definitely one of the best tournaments in years (so far) and as usual Professor King’s coverage is amazing!

I really appreciate all the work you do, and I find that your commentary is excellent and provides great insight to the thinking of the players. I have a small request, though. Could you maybe do a bit of commentary for the rest of the games in each round as well? I get that it's a lot of work, and I don't expect a full video for every game, but maybe 5 minutes in total to summarize what happend in the other games and potential key moments or positions? It would be very helpful.

I read somewhere that Kramnik once said "It is hardest to win a won position in chess". So true in this game

this tourney is a testament to how Carlsen is in a whole different level. I have never seen such inconsistency from top level players of recent times. Sure, Carlsen blunders from time to time but not multiple times in one game.
@johnstdm16 жыл бұрын
It's interesting that you mention this. I think that Carlsen blunders much less often because he seemingly goes to great lengths to explicitly avoid these sort of positions. Recently, I was watching a live stream of Carlsen playing blitz, and the position became exceptionally sharp with minor pieces all over an open board. Carlsen's comment live was something like, "Ugh, I have to be careful here. This isn't the sort of chess that I like." Of course, he won the game in good style, but I think that he typically uses his calculation power to make the game a more positional discussion of structure and activity, where he gets long-term chances and thus reduces the likelihood of a one-move blunder (i.e. loss). @DanielKing, could you comment on this?

This shows chess depths !!! Even both 2780+ players also can't evaluate properly every position!

Amazing. And the advice to all creative players that slips away in the end! Quit creativity when u have achieved sth!!! Dont go for the next masterpiece of combinations. It's over! You are done! Start the "one threat moves" . Grab a pawn. Do nothing! Have a glass of water! Question the arbiters outfit.

I can't understand why Aronian didn't take the bishop with check

I'll have a go. After 29. Qxc8+ Kh7 the queen has to move (rook on h8) and has “no squares” because 30. Qc5 is met with ... Ne4 and white loses a rook. There’s also 30. Rd8 Rxd8 31. Qxd8 Ne6 32. Qany fxe3 to consider. With 29. Qd8 Kh7 white has 30. Qxg5 and white gets a (different) minor piece with fewer complications. This analysis is wrong, as Daniel points out, but if Levon was thinking something, then surely this was it.

This has been a great tournament so far. By great I mean entertaining. I'm sure some of the guys aren't happy with their play, but there have been some immensely fun games to watch and dramatic outcomes. I just hope it all leads to a memorable WC in November.

Impossible to see some of those variations - as Daniel pointed out. However, I am flabbergasted about Aronian's 28.Qd8 ... I mean , what did he see there?

He probably wanted to grab the knight on g5 (instead the bishop c8), but totally overlooked that his rook on d6 is "hanging" after black moves Qf8. Thats what i believe, of course i dont know actually.

Aronian is cleary still recovering from his shock defeat against Kramnik I think. He is a great creative 'artist' like player but loses the flow at critical times. This is a pity as he has been doing so well prior to this tournament. I am still rooting for him and hope he gets back on the horse. Chess is a cruel game for sure! Daniel King is the only commentator in my opinion that really delivers in complex games for under 2000 players. The best in the business!

People should watch the press conference: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5iZiJiXrql2i8k, and skip to 7:22. For people wondering why Aronian never played 29. Qxc8+, apparently he never saw the move. I find this hard to believe because Aronian claimed that he saw 28. Rxg4 fxg4 29. Rd6 Qf5 30. Bd3 Ne4 31. Rd8+ Kh7 32. Qe7, and thought that this was easily winning. However, if he saw that 28. Rxg4 was winning, then he should have seen that 29. Qxc8+ is winning because the same tactical motif comes up in this line: 29. Qxc8 Kh7 30. Qxc5 Ne4 31. Rxg4 Nxc5 32. Rxh4 Kg8 33. Rd8+ I'm still stunned that the best tactical player on the planet missed taking a full piece with check.

As a fellow timetrouble`er myself I really dislike Levon`s (basically non-existent) time management: How complicated, or good, or bad, his position may be: He always acts incredibly fast. ;) In my book it already nearly cost him (sadly) one point in this tournament: Confronted with Kramnik`s 7...Rg8!, some very deep thought was appropriate, to possibly (not guaranteed) save the game. While here, apart from long castles, in a "high sense" ( obviously not regarding the complications afterwards ;) ) the logical move, instead of Rd1 , at least burning (lots of) time for regaining his mind, to finally take the bishop on c8 with his queen, was certainly the preferred course of action. From the two "sicknesses" , Grischuk`s ultimate addiction to time scrambles, and Aronian`s apparent impulsivity, I would actually always take the former. ;) In this game, Blumenfeld`s Rule (a re-formulated "Occam`s Razor") kind of seems to apply: After doing your calculations, take a final check "through the eyes of a patzer" just before you make your move. - If necessary sit on your hands in the meantime, - just to control your emotions.... ;)

wow, I have never seen a GM completely Blunder like this before... I know Aronian is heart-broken :(

I don't understand why people love this tournament so much. This tournament has honestly been a mess of blunders and mistakes. This game was the pinnacle of making inexplicable moves. I can't imagine any of these players beating Carlsen if these games are an indication. Just ridiculously messy play from both sides and multiple candidates to be honest.
@PowerPlayChess6 жыл бұрын
The reason I find this tournament compelling is that every player is totally invested in it. They are trying their best in every game, they know that second place means nothing; they are holding nothing back in terms of opening preparation. The whole atmosphere is completely different to a normal elite tournament where the players are well rewarded wherever they land, and somehow there isn't as much at stake. Perfect chess is quite boring, by the way...
