Love how Danny isnt over reliant on the comp, sadly even alot of strong commentators lean too heavily on the beast these days which affects their ability to instruct properly and denies the viewers a peak into how a GM looks for ideas/calculates/assess etc., Danny and Sagar are the best at this, im truly grateful

It's not even possible to get live coverage without that stupid engine bar 🙄 I would take an old-fashioned broadcast featuring two or three GMs in a studio trying to make sense of the games without any silicon help over what we have today any day of the week 🦖.

I rarely feel the need to wait for a video to be released, but your commentary has been the highlight for days and I am thoroughly enjoying both the tournament and your profound analysis. Thank you very much!

Give both these guys a lot of credit. The tension in these games, with all the back and forth has been immense. And neither has cracked under the pressure.

Daniel's reviews have just the right balance and speed for me to get the most out of it. Not too many sidelines or "capture, capture" repetition.

Nc5 after Bxh6 is such a zen move. Apart from the things that DK mentioned it also facilitates Rd3 which is crucial in variations after Bg5.

We had a great champ who knew how not to lose. Now we will have a better, one that wants to win. I will not have any problem recognizing the winner of this epic match as the new and legitimate champ.

The good thing about the classical king-of-the-hill format is that whoever wins the long winding race has honestly earned the title

True true, but had this wcc resulted in 14 uninteresting draws, the winner gaining the title by holding with black in armageddon, i for one would have thought of the new title holder as a surrogate champion only because the 'real' worldchampion got bored of defending his title. These guys are putting up a hard fight, and, at times, play amazing chess - in my eyes, they are fully earning the right to wear the crown, and not just because fide says so.

Mission accomplished Liren. Five left, three white, I presume. My only hope is that the match does not go to tiebreakers. Hopefully, one of these guys will win it in the classical portion. I don't think we can complain though, if it went more than 14 games. They've certainly given us an amazing fight. I thought Ding was almost winning a psychological battle when he offered the Berlin endgame and Nepo declined. You get the feeling Nepo really wants this to be decisive and clear, when it's all over. He had better be careful or that might give Ding extra opportunities. Today's opening did not surprise me. However, Sunday's I'm sure will. Can't wait!

After 21.Ng6 the position looked so good for white that I announced to my friend "I would win this in any league game, easily!" But after 23..Nh7! it is not so clear and even without 24...Rc2 it would be a very difficult game. Ding played well and to my eyes showed great technique in the endgame (43...Nf5!). Nepo's lucky shirt didn't help him to win.

Thanks Danny, great coverage! It's good to get an endgame. N+P endings can be diabolical, can't they. So Ding has white on Sunday and it's "Guess the opening" time. My money's on a Reti.

It's great to watch Daniel King analyze a Ruy Lopez. He wrote an excellent book called "Mastering the Spanish" which is by far the best introduction to this opening that I've ever encountered. It's a misfortune for chess players that the book is out of print and used copies sell for hundreds of dollars.

24:46 actually Daniel, I think this is a well known drawing position, with a Queen vs pawn on f2 right? Black can keep his King on h1 and white's queen can never capture the pawn or it will be stalemate. It's in Silman's Complete Endgame Course :)) Maybe Ding overlooked it.
@PowerPlayChess
@PowerPlayChess Жыл бұрын
Of course, the rule is rook’s pawn and bishop’s pawns on the seventh, but it all depends on where the king is, and I suspect Ding couldn’t be bothered to work it out as he had reached a clearly drawn position.

Ty for your analyses but i recommend you include the move-list with timestamps, or at least the time taken between moves. Time trouble has been a real factor in many of the games so far.

Sheesh. Glad I didn't stay up to watch the Knight/Pawns ending. Instead I got up early to catch this exquisitely erudite analysis which still didn't cover all complexities of that Spanish opening variation. Who would imagine that a game which ended in a Knight?Pawn ending could hold so much subtlety and drama?

A few comments have suggested that the general standard of play has been low and that there have been several blunders. I don't think I agree. Remember that the players don't have the advantage of the eval bar and an engine. An evaluation of say +2.0 might be a single sequence of moves which can be extremely hard for a human to find. When a slight deviation brings the evaluation down to zero, it magnifies the mistake.
