World Class Hybrid Bass Fishing Below McAlpine Dam

Chad hits the Ohio River with Chino Ross to target hybrid bass, but when they close the gates they have to come up with a new game plan! McAlpine Dam is one of the most unique fisheries in the world, and it certainly didn't disappoint on this trip.

Goodlord that was awesome!!! I've been fishing the Ohio over at Meldahl Dam and I haven't caught any bass yet. 42lb blue cat and 12lb flathead. 5to6lb channel cats and skips. Update 2023, figured out the river, found the big hybrids and stripers. What a blast!!!

That area is so interesting and just a smorgasbord of species. If it had shellcracker (redear), it would make the top of my list. I grew up in Jeffersonville/Utica.

chino i remember a few years back when you was fishing with us up on the duck pond wall,i wish i would of never showed you that spot,on acc of all the knuckleheads you brought back with you to over fish it....but i guess you gotta give a cripple crab a crutch once in awhile

I grew up on the ohio river in Utica and you could catch these hybrid bass off the docks by casting into the large schools of minnows.

What's the best season to catch them? I've just moved to Louisville. The river is really high right now, but I am curious how spring fishing is once the water level comes down. Any advice would be appreciated.

Very dangerous fishing that close lots of large rocks to get hung up on. If the water drops and it can drop feet in minutes you can run up on them and end up swamped. And that is not the lower dam that is the hydro. The lower dam is the water level below all of the dam.

No offense, I like the outdoors, and watching the show,however,what is the recommendation,concerning eating those fish?what are the mercury levels,in the lakes?especially lake herrington?promoting a problem, is a health concern,especially in children eating mercury, or,other chemicals.

90% of the Ohio has been officially called SAFE! Now, Steve Douglas will tell you any catfish over 10 lbs is a bad idea due to the age × water quality

Check your state DNR for a list of safe to eat fish. I know MN and OH report lead, mercury etc. per different fish, per a wide number of popular lakes/rivers. A lot of sampling is done annually too. Important resource for sure; I imagine the same for other states.
