You making a really good point there. You can find on youtube commentary by Breitner about his decision to take that penalty. The next day he had a panic attack (a real one apparently) re-living that decision and cursing himself about the insane chuzpe he displayed the day before.

if this was dive, for sure the second penalty (on 2nd half) NOT given by the referee was regular and a yellow card as well, but the referee didn't whisper at all. After all, this game was conducted by West Germany and it deserved to win. Sorry for Netherland that on previous games played the most beautiful play up to date but on the final it messed it. That's it.

It was a dive... but then the defender, Jansen I believe, always tackled the leg. In the last instance he lifts up his foot and makes contact while Hölzenbein is in a good scoring position. The same defender tackles on two more occasion in the penalty area each time hitting leg and feet. In that very same constellation Jansen - Hölzenbein he commits the most obvious and stupid foul against an advancing striker in the penalty box... and gets away with it. One of the biggest missed calls in a final ever. Oh, yes Müller scores the 3:1 in a perfectly good position and the linesman calls it offside. Holland did not deserve to win that day and they should not complain about the German penalty. Jansen had it coming.

Very hard to tell. Not too many of the Dutch players nearby were complaining. Holland got a questionable penalty before that. Cruyff was fouled outside the box if you look at it. Germany should have gotten another penalty later on in the game and had a goal ruled off. For some reason nobody ever mentions these scenes.

Cruyff was fouled inside. look better. With the other penalty and goal you are right, but if the first german penalty (also first schwalbe)wasn't given, the game would turn completely different. Maybe 6-0 for the Netherlands, maybe 1-4 for Germany, we will never know.

Yeah Müller scored a goal but it was ruled offside. The defender was 1.5 metres behind him, but Müller was so lightning fast in short sprints that he was ahead of the defender in a mere second

You can actually see Aarie Haan (#6) being furious with the player who committed the foul. Either way, you can't slide in and be nowhere near the ball and then complain. He was literally sliding right into his legs

From reviewing the video it is simply impossible to claim with certainty, that it was a dive. The food of the Dutch was so close to the one of Holz that only today's technique with high resolution and super slow Mo from multiple angles would allow such a statement with sufficient probability. But when the own team loses we are all tempted to make strong statements even in weak cases.

His slide made contact with the German's left foot; whether he could have avoided it and decided to take the fall or not is irrelevant. It is a penalty, he made contact, and none of which was the ball. It was a really reckless slide tackle-a truly Dutch tradition, along with Schwarte Pete.

Wim Jansen was a recklessly aggressive defender - not hurting players, mind you - but tackling inside the penalty box in an out of control fashion. His second tackle against Hölzenbein late in the game was just insane, hitting all legs with no ball in sight. The ref was too chicken or too biased to call it correctly. In fact, Jansen tackled Müller inside the box earlier in the game, which was also a clear foul. The Netherlands were sooo lucky with the refereeing (they will never admit that though).. the penalties not given, Müller's offside goal, which was perfectly good (the Dutch offside trap only worked because linesmen and referee were amateurs in a game of professionals), Cryff attacking Sepp Maier inside the goal area with an outstretched leg, which should have been an automatic second yellow card and would have sent him off as he was booked before. That game was full of massive, massive refereeing blunders.

That West German team that beat Holland 2-1 to win the 1974 World Cup was not better than the one that captured the Nations Cup two years earlier in Belgium. The one that beat Holland to win the 1974 World Cup had Wolfgang Overath the midfield general who preferred the short passing instead of the long passing. His contemporary and team mate Gunther Netzer orchestrated West Germany's 1972 Nations Cup triumph beating Russia 3-0 in Brussels. But Netzer had only one game in the 1974 World Cup finals.That defeat to East Germany by 1-0.

and one word for italy (even if it hurts me a little bit, cause my father is italian too): italy is known for playing defensive and often winning by one goal (like germany in the final 74). that does not make them bad. and dives and penaltys....just recall 2006 game versus the ukraine, and the semifinal versus germany. in the first they dived to the victory, in the second germany was not given a clear penalty, only a freekick.

Jansen’s foot was there way before it met Holzembein’s. No penalty from my personal Hawkeye. I must say it was a huge defensive mistake by the Dutch that they did not close in on him. Part of the total football tactical obsession could make you forget simple things, such as challenging an attacker before he ventures inside the area.

2006: it was italy against AUSTRALIA, not ukraine, my fault. there was a match winning dive for italy. and in the semis it was a whistle-blow in the 81rst minute cannavaro to podolski, which led to a freekick, althought the incident was in the box.

and "all about in world cup history": they stood in the semifinal 10 times and won the european title 3 times, even though they could not enter each tournament. in my opinion germany is just highly underestimated. even a player like klose, who won the golden shoe in 2006 and the silver shoes in 2002, is not regnognized internationally as an european superstar. if he had played for brazil or if he had one of those gigantic advertisement-contracts that problably would be different.

One soft penalty cancelled out the other, the earlier Dutch penalty arose out of an equally dubious foul. Jack Taylor had a nightmare start to the game, but if anybody saw the whole game you would see that the Germans deserved to come out winners. Having said that there is no doubting that the Dutch played the most attractive football of the tournament.

Eurocup: is less worth then wc, i agree, but nevertheless italy DO CARE about the eurocup and tries to win them - they are just not very sucessfully. AND FINALLY 1974: YES, it was a dive in my opinion.

In what way? Jansen makes a sliding, evidently not to Hölzenbeins leg, but to the ball - just according to the rules. The fact that Jansen did not hit the ball is no proof whatsoever that he *intended* to play Hölzenbeins leg. There was no option for the referee then to give Jansen the benefit of the doubt. That he didn't do that, shows his lack of professionalism.

as you pointed out, 74, in the second half there was "objectively" a clear penalty for germany. so was in 1990 (i think it was a foul against augenthaler). so in both finals there was penalty. and ´54 people like Ferenc Puskás, who suffered his hole life from the final loss, brought up doping rumors. as you cant prove such things, and its highly doubtfull, you should not claim things like that, espiacially, if you are objectively, how you try to quote out so often.

W. Germany deserved to win the Euro 72 and World Cup 90, they were outstanding, but most neutrals were disappointed brilliant Hungary in 54 and Holland in 74 didn't get their just reward. Still, great credit to the Germans for their usual competitive spirit, and they did have some top players of course, Beckenbaur, Muller, Breitrner, Vogts... They lost the 66 final to home advantage (Hurst's "goal" didn't cross the line); Portugal, England + Germany were about equal. Here, silly tackle + dive

The penalty in the second half for Germany does never justify this given penalty. Because without the first their wouldn't be the second penalty, the whole game would be another. Fact is Germany couldn't equalize, the German dived and only this brought them back into the game.
