Well in 1987 they played with a red ball. That was also a great win because Australia was near the bottom of the pile back then and in absolute doldrums. This year while we weren't expected to win it, we were always in the mix.

Yes l thought when we were 3/47 l didn't give Australia much chance at winning the game. All throughout the world cup India were so dominant and it seemed as if we had just scraiped our way into the final. In front of a130,000 screaming Indians l just thought it's too much to ask for. When Labashane came in, l was hoping we could at least get to 100 without loosing another wicket. Then when the 100 partnership came up l thought where going to loos a wicket soon, but no they just batted on and on. Then reaching 200 runs, being still only three wickets down with plenty of overs in hand, I thought where going to win this. What an increadable innings by Head and Labashane, Australia's ability to dry up India scoring boundaries was increadable and made the difference.

You’re right - Pat Cummins saying, “I’m going to take the ‘risky’ move because it’s the right move and I’ll accept full responsibility for the outcome,” despite his constant criticism from ‘legends’ and the media is stunningly brave. He leads from the front, makes the right decisions and takes accountability - the epitome of a leader!

India literally gifted the match after Rohit Sharma got out, but getting Travis head soon was crucial ,but so many ball went past Head without any luck for Bumrah..but Head took the risks rightly and it paid off.. Including an outstanding catch.Sky totally flopped ,surely could have scored another 30-40runs ,say 280 was a winning score on this pitch but it was not to be and Aus win very easily.. Kudos Australia,6th time ,best cricket team ever .. What a great year for Australia, test champions, world cup winner, ashes retained, best time to retire 🎉🎉👍

Saying India would've won 9 times out of 10 is a bunch of crap. Australia built to that game playing through adversity and had become the far more in form and resilient team. The Australian team had class and experience all over the park, at least the equal of India. Turns out the Indian team had plenty of weaknesses just waiting for a class team like Australia to exploit.

I thought Cummins's constant bowling changes during the middle overs were brilliant. He refused to allow the Indian batters to settle and pick off 5 or 6 an over instead of 3 or 4. Someone would bowl a tight over and he'd pull them off anyway because he wanted to keep giving the batters different looks. A complaint I had about his captaincy and general approach in England was that it felt like he was sitting back and allowing England to go after the game. As far as I'm concerned, we shouldn't be allowing England to dictate the course of a cricket match. But in the two knockout games here, he took the initiative with his bowling changes. I wanted us to bat first but I said to my brother early on that I liked how Cummins was looking to take control, even if it didn't work. It also says a lot about who he is as a cricketer that his best performance with the ball in the tournament came in the final when we needed it most. The dismissal of Kohli wasn't as critical as that catch, but it mattered. I was thinking 280 was par at that point, and they finished 40 shy of it, runs they desperately needed as it meant Labuschagne didn't have to worry early on about his strike rate and could just bat time and wait for conditions to settle.

Indians, barring the usual Rohit - Kohli - Bumrah, failed to perform on the big day. For Indian fans its a pretty familiar script. It's often the performance of the next lot decides it. In India's case Gill, Iyer, Siraj, kuldeep, SKY all failed. Shami saved his worst for this day. In contrast, Head & Marnus step up in their first CWC Final. Aussies have in them what nobody has, as far as cricket world cups go.

Actually him not being captain is a major factor they didn't win IMO. After that discussion he changed tactic and Australia found it harder to score but it was too late.

I don't know if its necessarily our greatest win in terms of the quality of the performance or winning against the odds. However, it is definitely the most memorable and the sweetest victory. Head to head I don't think this team would beat Steve Waugh's 1999 team but this 2023 team definitely are more gracious winners and can stand tall as winning under pressure. If pushed I would say that the 1987 ICC World Cup win was the best ever as they won it when no-one expected them and after years of losing after the retirement of the big three, Australia was suddenly back on top against the odds and all of Alan Border and Bob Simpson's hard work to bring Australia modern cricket was rewarded and Australia loved the team rather than simply loving Border and despairing of the rest.

Something else that struck me are the parallels with the 1996 World Cup final. Australia won the toss and did what we normally do and batted. We got off to a flyer (for the era) and scoring got tough in the middle overs. Sri Lanka applied the brakes and we couldn't release them so we didn't get to a big enough total, scoring 241, just 1 more than India managed today. After a couple of early wickets conditions settled down and Sri Lanka ran down the total with little difficulty, cruising to a 7 wicket victory highlighted by a sparkling century. Not much different from this final but Australia were on the other side of it this time because they were bold enough to bowl first.

A lot more dew in 1996 final rendered our bowlers completely ineffectual. I don't think that was the case on this occasion as we didn't see Indian spinners needing to dry the ball between deliveries.

Congratulation on Australia winning. Right from the beginning of the tournament I always felt the three Aussie fast bowlers were far better than rest of the teams. India were 100 runs short on that pitch. Loosing the toss, batting first and none of the batsmen scoring big and poor batting performance from 4 of the 6 batsmen was the real reason for the defeat. There was nothing the Indian bowlers could do with such a low score of 240. With that score they would have lost to England, South Africa, Newzealand, Pakistan and Srilanka. The competitive score on that pitch was above 340. Millions of Indians got disappointed. The promising aspect is with so much talent emerging through IPL, India will always be one of top 3 performing nations for the rest of the future.

The show has been great value for me since the majority of games have been unwatchable due to timezone, so thanks. You've given a mental picture of the happenings which is second to none, tbh. Having been a daily fixture for so long I'm gonna miss this. My thoughts: India got a taste of the Australia us kiwis are so familiar with - spiteful seems to strong a word, but we know how Australia turns it on when it matters. Crushing dreams is their kink - I just fucking knew this was gonna happen. I know Australians, I'm half of one. India was virtually doing it's victory lap after the semi, and the pitch stuff ... like, don't chum the sharks dummies. Australia strutted in and made them look fucking ordinary, and it's actually pretty funny. It was top 5% stuff out there, it's that ineffable x-factor shit, again. It's the siege of Tobruk fuck you we'll just bayonet charge your tanks stuff, Gandalf you shall not pass stuff - India hasn't got it. In the end it was meek. I always thought the narrative was overwrought for media purposes. India were vulnerable and brittle after all and I think that wasn't such a hot take for people whose livelihoods didn't rely on pandering to an Indian market - they've fucked up every properly high stakes match for over a decade, but if you say that the billion-strong Lynch mob will send you death threats on your socials. They won the WC of most cancerously toxic fanbase last night though...

I think 1987 deserves the prize because we were still scraping along the bottom as a cricket team, the previous summer England had beaten us at home in the Ashes and leathered us in the final of the one-day tri series so for us to go to India and win the World Cup was completely unexpected to say the least. This year's team had plenty of quality and we knew it was possible they could win, although I was never expecting it until the last 60 runs or so! Very little of the 1987 World Cup was on TV here so my personal favourite remains 1999 and the 2 wins over South Africa, highlighted by the semi-final. The final was good fun and ensured those other great memories would remain at the top. This year's win was great and I will remember it with great pleasure. Beating India in their backyard is incredible!

that also kick started the era of dominance with the 1992 cup being a hiccup in between because we'd played too much cricket that summer and were burned out by the time the world cup came around. The West Indies also flopped and they were still a good team then.@@iankearns774

There was a shami lbw appeal vs travis head in the 6th over i think which was very close... caught on the crease back leg etc. No review, no ball tracking on broadcast. Will bug me for the rest of my life. Credit to Australia though, they've looked dead in this tournament at certain points and then do the unbeatable Australia thing they do at world cups.

India is a place where finger spinners get the most bite of surface and that’s proven through stats historically over the years And Australia comes to India with only one spinner in their side and that too is a fuckin leggie How they pull off another World Cup This was not historical This Is LEGENDARY

Ah but Indian won the moral victory. My suggestion is to have a moral victory champions league with only England and India in it. In that way at least one of them would win something. Then the next year the second place team could be champions without actually playing a game. Easy peasy

I think you guys haven’t made enough about how tacky the wicket was during the first innings in the heat. Australia of course executed perfectly and maximised their position but they did get the better end of the conditions.

@@iankearns774 That’s true. But I didn’t say Australia won because they won the toss. Just that they had better conditions in general. India too often have become pitch obsessed and the BCCI’s input in engineering a slow wicket today really backfired. Ironically, they would have done better on a truer wicket l.

They got them because Cummins went against the usual Australian instinct. With India being the better team, a tricky pitch helped Australia because it created the potential to even up. A truer pitch would have made it easier for India's heavy hitters to score fast. Does Ahmedabad usually have true pitches or was this slightly tricky pitch relatively common there?

@@harifederer I dont know why all you Indians think you somehow have the better team. The Stats dont suggest that, preparing a flatter deck to suit your bats is like us preparing a seaming wicket to suit our bowlers. We dont do that, all our wickets have their own characteristics, that deck the Saffas got beat on a few years back at the Gabba was a mistake by the curator and didnt suit either side. Look at the SCG and Adelaide Oval, both conducive to batting except under lights at Adelaide where it hoops. In that case its the luck of the toss who bowls at the right time in the gamer It appears India prepares wickets to suit their game and to me that is cheating.

I picked them to win before the world cup if they got to the final... and then if they won the toss they needed to bowl first... Why? Because its cricket and its Australia! This pains me to say as a kiwi of course (or maybe coarse😂) but as they say the truth hurts... They toss as in the semi nz vs india proved crucial for opposite reasons. The movement to contend with in the semi batting second was the difference and the slowness of the pitch with the dew making it easier batting second was the difference... Cummins and co's tactics made the difference also but India chasing with Kohli and the dew after the aussies limping to a low total on a dead track would of been close at best i think... India didnt make the most of the swing early either with Shami opening (which he doesnt do) turned out to be a blunder... Good to see the underdog win when most wrote them off!

Australia’s fielding performance was some of the best I have seen in an ODI in a long time. Perfect bowling to fields and exceptional placements. Literally strangled them out of the game. It was clear that they were low on confidence towards the end of their batting innings which clearly carried over to their time in the field. So great to beat India. Their co-ordinated efforts to produce favourable conditions has been making a mockery of cricket. Gavaskar and Bohgle are without doubt two of world sports most irritating, biased and borderline cultural supremacist pundits. Get a big dog up ya! Outplayed by a classier team of tougher men of far greater integrity. What a win.

Sometimes people tend to not realize that there is cricket loving public in India, that doesn't necessarily pledge allegiance to BCCI or their underhanded ness and some very toxic fanbase who tend to be loudest. I have no problem admitting to the fact that Australia has what it takes to win and generally a much better sporting nation, but to call out the Indian team for lacking integrity is very harsh. They were tough on the field and arguably the best team this tournament until they failed miserably today. Also the biased nature of the commentators might reflect poorly on the team and may seem hubristic but again the players can't be faulted for.

Australia played the better cricket on the day. They maximised the conditions afforded to them. Dry wicket during the day and dew at night. Don’t talk about integrity in cricket , it’s rich coming from us Australians.

@@SHH885 There is literal documented evidence of India influencing the ICC in terms of pitch types and pitch selection. These aren’t lies or stories made up by western journalists who are anti-India - most of these efforts to gain hugely undue advantage even have paper trails. I feel like every team in this world cup received equal coverage. India didn’t achieve anything - they lost the final of a tournament that was organised to ensure their victory. Every team who played India may as well have played with one arm behind their back. When this Indian team actually achieves, like when they won in Australia under Rahane I’ll credit them. That was a fair series because our pitches are prepared according to the climactic conditions and not to the spec of the ICC* (BCCI) to ensure results for India. At the end of the day India lost a tournament that had been organised for them to win - that is not an achievement - it is abject failure.
