World Cup Fans Have To Sit Outside This Soviet Stadium To Watch

The World Cup begins today, with Russia playing Saudi Arabia in Moscow for the opening match. 32 countries will be competing in the tournament, which concludes on July 15th.
The Russian Federation is hosting matches in 12 stadiums across the country. One of the last stadiums to be readied for the World Cup is the Yekaterinburg Arena, which was originally constructed in 1957, during the Soviet heyday.
A protected cultural monument, the stadium seated 23,000 people, falling about 12,000 seats short of FIFA’s requirements. So in 2014, chief architect Oleg Gak was tasked with rebuilding the arena to meet the World Cup requirements. There was one caveat, he had to do so, while preserving the arena’s unique Soviet architecture.
“FIFA wanted specific kinds of stands that could hold 35,000 people” said Gak.” So the new stadium was built around the old protected walls.”
Gak’s team decided to open the stadium's perimeter and build temporary grandstands. The expanded seating puts approximately 12,000 fans outside the stadium walls -- but their view of the field should be uncompromised.
“We as designers made plans for the future, assuming the grandstands would go away, and the facade would be closed off” says Gak.
The Yekaterinburg arena will host its first match, Egypt versus Uruguay, on June 15 at 17:00 local time.

That's a really cool way to expand a historic stadium without damaging it. Then you can just take the temporary (well built) stands down after the world cup and you won't have huge empty stadiums after everything is done.

It's going to be like that in Toronto in 2026 world cup, it has already happened in Toronto actually on a smaller scale in Toronto in 2016 MLS Cup. The stadium was built for future expansion and temporary seats since 2007.

digirapa Toronto FC have an interesting stadium, they will host 2026 world cup matches....and the stadium was built in a way like this stadium in Russia, it will go under much more renovations by the time world cup starts in 2026....but no doubt it will have temporary seats. ..they already held a MLS Cup in 2016 with temporary seats that extended outside of the stadium behind the goal identical to how the seats at the stadium in Russia does now.

@MrChampken

Toronto FC BMO field stadium is built in a similar way, now it was built in 2007 as a shitty 20,000 capacity stadium...but was built to be expanded to over 40,000+ seats for the future...it already has gone through extensive renovations, and has more to come. It currently now has 30,000 capacity as it averages around 26,000-30,000 fans a game. Roofs are raised high for future expansion...they have already expanded temporary seats in 2016 for MLS Cup final behind the goal that extended outside the stadium just like this stadium in Russia, the capacity was 36,000 for the game. The seats were taken down after and brought back to 30,000. Now with 2026 world cup ahead they plan to host matches. The stadium will be expanded to 45,000....the stadium will go through large renovations, and some no doubt will be temporary seats. Looking at the stadium today, you can see how it will all fit into place for the 2026 world cup.
