When you regularly skate you don't usually run if your a beginner. Some people do but sometimes they fall, its a lot more in speed skating. I'm no where near as fast as them but I am a speed skater. It took lots of practice and even now I don't really "run" that much in speed skating.

I use rollers ( I don't know if it's the same sport) and they are amazing, I go fast (not as fast as they go, of course) and I really feel that my legs work a lot, you burn a good amount of calories. It is such an underrated sport :(

A lot of it is down to knowing how to crash. They crash a lot (although they try not to) and eventually you get a feeling for when you fall and how you should react. They probably try to roll instead of trying to absorb the fall with their arms. It hurts a lot less that way and keeps road rash to a minimum.
