If I recall rightly the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau ships were fondly called "the ugly sisters" by their crews due to the fact they prowled together. I think only the Bismarck was referred to as a "he" by its captain and by the British (calling it the Beast) and as represented in the film Sink the Bismarck.

Jingles, never change, German ships are "she" and the only case a German ship was ever referenced as male was _once_ by the Commander of KMS Bismarck - as a stupid analogy for pride and strength. So yeah keep spreading that myth, but the joke is getting rather old in the tooth by now

@@Sigrid_Von_Sincluster Blame it on Sink the Bismarck I am guessing. Its where the whole German's referring to ships as He started I am guessing. However I do believe it was reported by one of the surviving crew that Captain Linderman did refer to Bismarck as a He due to its power (for a very short time it was viewed as the most powerful ship afloat) and its this quote that is put into the film although I think its Admiral Lutjens who says it in the film. The film got Lütjens (played by Karel Štěpánek) very wrong, portraying him as a stereotypical Nazi, committed to Nazism and crazed in his undaunted belief that the Bismarck is unsinkable. In reality, Lütjens did not agree with Nazi policies and anti-semitism and refused to give the Nazi salute when Hitler visited Bismarck before its first and final mission, deliberately using instead the traditional naval salute. He was pessimistic of the chances of success of Bismarck's mission and realised that it would be a daunting task. Unlike his masterful handling of the earlier Scharnhorst/Gneisenau raid he and Linderman didn't work well as a team and seemed to disagree on courses of action.

All ships are called "she" in german, with some exceptions. For example "Imperator", later "RMS Berengaria" was called "DER Imperator", following the wishes of Emperor Willhelm II. In case of the "Bismarck" it might be referred to as "DER Bismarck" from its sailors itself, but this never made it into common language.

German speaker here: We use the female forms for ships, not the male ones. Its "DIE Prinz Heinrich" (so female) not "DER Prinz Heinrich" (male). If you would tell me "Der Prinz Heinrich", ich would think, you talked to me about the Prince, not the ship.

I always found it odd that the Germans, as well as the Brits in some cases, named their ships after famous men like Otto von Bismarck and King George V, yet the ships are still considered female. It just sounds silly calling ships with males names “she”. I’m sure other navies also named their ships after famous men, I’m certain the French did that, and the Russians as well, and I just remembered the Yanks also named their destroyers after famous Navy and Marine Corps heroes, but the Germans and Brits are the more prevalent ones in my immediate memory.

Fun fact: In Czech the ships are "she" when reffered to in general, but that changes when reffered to by name. They are feminine, when they are named after a woman. They are masculine when they are named after a man. When named after a place (City, state etc), the gender matches the gender of the place in czech translation- So it can be all three genders. Then again if the name of the ship is preceded by for example it's type designation, then it's reffered to by the gender of the type. (Battleships, Carriers, Frigates and submarines are "she" Cruisers and Destroyers are "he" and torpedo boats are "it") So when you say for example 'Yorktown', it is "he" in czech. But 'the ship Yorktown' would be "she". Whereas 'Colorado' would be "it" and 'the ship Colorado' would once again be "she". And to make it even more interresting- USS Reno (CL-96) would be "she" in "the ship Reno", "he" in "the cruiser Reno" and "it" if reffered to just by the name "Reno"... I think that is most likely due to the fact that our country never really had access to a sea, or any regular navy :-D :-D

@@pirig-gal I was in Szczecin in early 90's with my parents and we wanted to see the harbor. I tried to ask locals for direction, but got very confused. I tried asking for "Ships" (in my Czech and very basic English- I was about 10 at that time) and everybody just pointed somewhere and sent me to a farm... :-D - "Statek" in Polish means "Ship", while in Czech it means "Farm(house)"...

Yeah his aim, camerahandling and indecisiveness made it easy to tell he was new to the game. My eyes was hurting whenever he was randomly looking around, instead of aiming and just look at the map while the turrets were turning.

Win by being afk reminded me of one of my early t5 battles: 1 cruiser from our team crashed on loading, and never got back in. We fought the whole battle, and built up a huge points lead, but ended up dead, with 4+ enemies left on the other team. However, the enemy didn't make it down to our afk/crashed cruiser who did exactly what he had to - NOTHING. Didn't fire a shot, didn't sail 1m ... got a solo warrior!

13:45 - While technically true, the Ashitaka is a fine ship. It's been my go-to choice for ranked (bronze, though) for several sprints now. It's a glass cannon, but somehow people just underestimate her or cannot deal with her. But then again, my taste of ships might be different.

I had the Ashitaka before too, it's a very fun ship with powerful broadside firepower. While it doesn't have the armor or durability of the Nagato, it is a very fast battlecruiser that is perfect for kiting and pushing flanks, reminds me of a stock Amagi at tier 7.

"A Game of Throws" is my experience with WoT quite often. Died when we were winning 11-5? About 10 minutes later I get the results screen - we lost, they capped. And we were sweeping them at that point.

I actually really admire Jingles' effort to pronounce the Dutch cruisers' names. It's not yet spot on, but really really good in contrast to anyone else trying to pronounce them. It is amazing to hear foreigners almost pronouncing our ships correctly. Yes, I know we have a terribly hard to pronounce language.

This battle seriously hurts to watch, and not because of the absolutely braindead enemy team or Jingles getting facts wrong as always. The map awareness and target priorisation of ET was godawful and tbh that end result is just as impressive as it is undeserved. He threw this game just as hard as the enemy players tried to and he had several chances to blast that Emerald before the final encounter. Half of this video i wanted to yell at or smash the screen, my roommate actually cam by and asked if something is wrong and i cannot claim that watching this was an enjoyable experience.

Why not turn and get all guns bearing on the target for the greatest chance to score the hits that might change the loss into a win? 2:45 Both P Heinrich and Gneisenau shot at the same time, as you can see 14 armor piercing shells in the view. They fly almost the same course, although Gneisenau's is a bit to the right slightly (although it should be well aimed at the bow). 2:54 Myoko has 37400 max HP, and is at max HP. Heinrich scores multiple hits including a citadel, and damages the ship by 15587 hit points. Since the remaining HP is 21813, all the damage dealt to that Myoko is from Heinrich, which means, every single shell Gneisenau shot has missed. Typical Gneisenau. When would it get buffed?

Well aimed at the bow, maybe.. but its a much smaller target to hit and its BB dispersion with only 6 guns. Regardless of gneis being saddled with bad accuracy, it simply wasnt aimed very well. If he had considered the reverse and adjusted his aim they might have dev struck that poor guy.

Ok I guess I am alone in loving the Dutch ships. Especially once they change from CL to CA. THey are great support and utility ships. Need decent HE got it, need some actual armor got it, need to pry a ship from behind a smoke screen or an island done. I would include they have some of the best AA in their class but no one cares about that. Also there are people complaining that it is a CV when you have very little control or range with that attack. I wish all CVs worked like that. It would make sense to stick with your team when you can't hit from the back corner of the map. Also having a seperate cool down on the plane types would force you to use them all and use them wisely.

I know that i was bitching about you referring to all german warships as "she" 2 a few years ago but things really aren't that simple... when the name of the ship has features a masculine word - like Prinz (=prince), König (=king) or Kurfürst (=elector) - you'd generally call it a "he" and everything else a "she"but there are a lot of exceptios. I'd still say that the Graf Spee is feminine, for example, even though Graf translates to count. But i really appreciate your effort Jingles!

As a man who likes to read books, have you read or have books read to you, have you read Shattered Sword "The untold story of the Battle of Midway" by J.Parshall and A.Tully? I have just returned from Texas after a 2-week visit to a mate who was in the USAF. One place we went was the War in the Pacific Museum in Fredericksburg (it's self a great place to visit) and he gave me his copy to bring home. He recommended it as a good read and although I have only just started it has a lot of detail, orders of battle etc.
