World of Warships Blitz - Dutch cruiser "Johan de Witt" review

This is all we can see for now from the Dutch tech tree preview - the tier 9 cruiser, "Johan de Witt". I was keen to see if the limited range of the airstrike would severely impact the T9 matchmaking, or if this ship would still be viable in the face of "basecampers united".

Combining the bomber spamming and sniping with AA support work is working really good for me in ranked battles since yesterday.

I haven't had a chance to try ranked, but I like the mechanic. Having the ability to hit ships that are hiding behind islands isn't to be underestimated.

I was pleasantly surprised by the guns. Not quite as good as the German ones, but they're effective. And the airstrike is a nice new mechanic, instead of a remix of existing ones.

Definitely a ship I've enjoyed. Will be keeping it around for ranked. Between the bombs and guns you're constantly setting fires and the AA is monstrous. With an AA build and the air defense skill active the ship can nearly take out 3 full squadrons before said squadrons even get the chance to turn around and go back to their carrier.

Basically just bow in, drop bombs, hug islands, use your guns more often to get the full potential dmg And positioning

Yep, that sums it up. The style reminds me a lot of the USN CAs, where you need to compensate for lack of range with island cover and positioning. These things have the added benefit of being able to hit things behind islands, although the cluster bombs unfortunately don't pose a major threat to DDs.

This feels like a ship that's going to work best in divisions. It seems that much of the tactics that work well on the Dutch line demand a somewhat decent team that doesn't vacate your flank and is willing to push allongside you or ahead of you. Given the average team IQ (on EU at least), I would say you got lucky with a good team on golden channel given that usually that map inspires great rushes of shit to the brains. Anyhow good review, 10/10 have a stroopwafel.

Yes the tier 10 does get 2 precise aiming 1. Although….it’s tier 10 and it’s the lowest one. It makes sense on the Colombo because she has 16 guns. It looks reasonably precise and you’ll be playing bow in most of the time

The precise aim 1 is actually surprisingly good, it's 3x the dispersion reduction of the precise aim module, AFAIR. But yeah, it'll depend on the range, and how bad it is to begin with. She'll get the Scharnhorst's guns, so probably not a menace to DDs.

My current battle stats of this ship is “ Avg damage of 56678 out of 255 battle” and this is even worse than my Henry .😂 Initially I thought she’s a gunning supercruiser then I realized she only had a range of 11.9km (after putting on historical cam). To my knowledge, the record of shortest range of main battery of a supercruiser goes to the Azuma, AND EVEN SHE HAS A RANGE OF 13.47km. 😂 In the NA server,short range is no that lethal, but man, 11.9km just pushes her into an uncomfortable and risky distance from those big calibers. Same principle could be applied to her air strike as well, 9.3km is not enough. For the upcoming T10 Golden Lion, her main battery range should be no less than 12.5km and WG should give her minimally 9.9km range for air strike, otherwise she will be a completely garbage.

I was actually surprised the T9 worked ok for me. I was expecting the long cooldown and relatively short range of the guns to cause trouble, but it's not a bad one. T10 is going to be really where it'll have to deliver, though. We'll see.

@@FunandGameswithTerry I am actually playing her kinda like a shorter ranged version of my Stalingrad. ( Yes I'm the guy who keeps bugging you to try a maxed Stalingrad) I play the flanks and snipe and save the airstrikes to do things like make battleships turn of from flanking positions. Oh and for blaping anything behind islands. Good ship, I'll keep her when I get the 10. I've always been hitting my sharnhorst looking forward to those guns with a faster reload. My big question is will the tier 10 have 3 airstrikes like the 7dp or will it stick to 2 just higher damage.

Yeah, teir 10 will have a precise aim. However, i don't think I will see much gun combat from these things, I have encountered people playing carrier in these things.

Once the novelty wears off hopefully people will get around to playing them normally. If you don't use the guns you're leaving damage on the table.

The air strike potential is actually reduced imo in this ship, since you still only get two strikes, but with increased cooldown. Yes, they do damage, but you want the fires on top. I find that, compared to the earlier tiers, I'm actually doing more with the guns on this. We'll see how T10 plays.

Yep, that was shotgun Iowa. Can't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside. Does get to try again quickly, though. I'm not a fan, either, but the line has its adherents.

Was about to, even though Iowa has just been an epic failure, but chased US light cruisers, the Tillman-ish BB line, Italian cruisers and BBs, and still not really trying to play Iowa or get Monty LOL...

Somehow I am not conviced at all that this line will be worthy of my grind time and or money after the bomber nerf in the last update. If I want aa I will just play my worcester and if I want to hit people with tiny cluster bombs I will just play the malta.

It might have the strongest AA for cruisers at tier 9 but not the best at Tier 9 as a whole. Friesland still has this ship beat. But Friesland also is technically a Dutch dd not a EU dd. So you could say the Dutch have the best AA at tier 9.

Actually, you'll find that while Friesland has the definite edge in range, de Witt beats her by over 350 points in combined alpha damage. I'd say in practice, they're about on par.

I'm playing on Android, and using the built-in screen recorder for footage. I record the voiceover with a USB mic (Blue Yeti). For audio editing, I'm using www.audacityteam.org/, kdenlive.org/en/ for video editing, and www.gimp.org/ for image editing (all free software). AZ screen recorder is a decent app I've used as well. Can't really say about IOS much.
