Using these techniques, I have held off multiple battleships in my New Mexico while punishing all around me. Tying up several capital ships while the rest of my team clears out the smaller ones has often heavily tipped the balance. Angled vs broadside makes a world of difference. I have had rounds where 90+% of fire either bounced or did tiny amounts of damage while timing my gun swings to maximize the hurt on following ships. It has literally changed the entire face of the game. That and finally realizing citidel hits are at the waterline. Fairly healthy cruiser... baBAM... no cruiser. I now know why, as a cruiser captain, I was getting 80% of my hull shot off in the first few minutes of the game. So thank you sir for your explanation and examples!

More people need to learn that armor angling is very important in this game, thanks for posting. Had a North Carolina game where I was chased by 3 fusos while I was angling, took 115 hits and minimal damage the entire time. Angling also makes some cruisers very effective against even BB fire, I regularly drive my des Moines angled against Iowas and yamato and trade much better hp wise

Armor angling works, that's for sure. I've bounced enemy shells in my Pensacola, of all things, because I had it angled. Not great armor, but angled it can be harder to penetrate. Another thing for people to realize is that ships were armored against what their designers imagined their primary opponents would be. A rule of thumb most designers went with, however, is armoring a ship to withstand hits from enemy guns with the same caliber of their main batteries. That is, a ship with 16-inch guns would be armored to protect against 16-inch guns. Thus don't expect angling a destroyer to work against a battleship, but you can occasionally bounce shots from enemy destroyers if you're at the right angle. Obviously, a ship's role as the designers imagined it more often than not affected how much it would be armored (also technical limitations and treaty obligations; see the North Carolina class). Hence why battlecruisers were much more lightly armored than proper battleships, and why some cruisers had good armor and others were thinly protected. Look up whatever ship you're using to see what her role was and you'll get an idea of how well she actually is protected.

Hey Chase, you know what's ironic to me? In reality, crossing an enemy's T was the best possible thing in a gun battle. It allowed you to pummel an enemy ship with all your guns, while they could only respond with their forward batteries. In WoWS, it's completely different. As your video stated, a ship with its bow or stern pointed towards an enemy's broadside is going to survive much longer than a ship in a broadside duel. It doesn't matter if you have massive amounts of guns and shells hitting you, you're basically invulnerable. This kinda makes it so that crossing someone's T makes you die much quicker. Funny how WoWS and reality are practically opposites, isn't it?
@kvnrthr15899 жыл бұрын
Zerokiller1628 It's always annoying to see "realistic" games favor silly tactics. Not every aspect of naval warfare has to be modelled realistically, but when you actually lose by applying actual tactical principles the game loses any claims to realism. We can see in this video that applying WW1-style fighting columns, all guns bearing on the enemy, would fail in this game, a sad conclusion.
@davidkaminski6159 жыл бұрын
Zerokiller1628 Crossing the T is only beneficial when you have multiple ships in a firing line. In this way, you have multiple full batteries of guns facing the first ship of an opponent's line of battle. In single ship engagements, mobility and target aspect ratio are more important.Take for example the naval engagement of Taffy 3. The American destroyers engaged the Japanese warships singly and they used their superior maneuverability to survive longer than they had any rights to be. The Japanese ships were disorganized and could not concentrate their firepower to overwhelm one single target. This was one reason why that battle was such a lopsided victory for the outmatched American destroyers. The American captains knew how to fight on their own, and Japanese tactics were to fight as a group in line of battle.So unless you form up with several players on your team into a battle like, Crossing the T isn't that important in single ship engagements.
@ComradeThomas9 жыл бұрын
Yes, but you still have more guns on the target. Also, there is plunging fire to take in. You did state that rather well, though.
@davidkaminski6159 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You are correct that you will have more guns on target, I'd say crossing the T is situational. It has it's benefits, and also it's shortcomings, as iChase demonstrated.
@bnadit19499 жыл бұрын
Zerokiller1628 well the dispersion actually makes crossing the T a bad tactic as it makes you get hit more as the dispersion is more to the sides than the forward-back

Using the bow or stern to face the enemy does provide the maximum defense, but comes at the cost of higher risk of your guns getting outright destroyed if the opponent have the sense of ignore for your citadel and just disable you due to your position. Also, if you are fighting another ship trying to use angling to defend himself it's better to use HE instead of AP. HE shells can still be deflected but they are likely to detonated upon impact, thus able to deal damage and possibly fire to the target while AP is very likely to just bounce off. I'm not sure how feasible it is now to penetrate straight through the bow or stern for citadel like one of the earlier captain academy's videos after 3.1.

Einsig except for when, you know.. plunging fire from the KM Bismarck penetrated the deck armour and one-hit sunk the HMS Hood on May 24th, 1941. or when divebombers attacked warships with armor penetrating bombs from straight above them... but yeah, plunging fire was only a fantasy...
@Einsig9 жыл бұрын
One, Bismarck could not penetrate the deck armor of Hood at the ranges they engaged (14-18 kilometers). German guns used lighter weight, higher velocity shells which were naturally worse at penetrating deck armor, and Hood had sufficient deck armor to deflect them at that range. This is based on data the Germans themselves recorded on the performance of their guns. Hood was far more likely to have been blown up by a fire that managed to work its way into the magazine, and it is well known that there was a fire burning on Hood for a significant time that was most likely started by Prinz Eugen, not Bismarck. Two, dive bombers have absolutely nothing to do with naval guns, and bringing them up is just a red herring.
@davidkaminski6159 жыл бұрын
Einsig I beg to differ. In the case of Hood, most of its upgraded armor was waiting for it back at the ship yard when it came in for its overhaul. The ship's condition was generally desperate and badly in need of attention. Based on many interviews of Ted Briggs which are readily available on KZbin, the fire caused by Prince Eugen and the fateful shot that detonated the aft magazine were two separate occurrences. If you're not convinced, look to the actions of the people who were in command of the boat, who were in a better position to know the abilities and deficiencies of their own boat more than you or I. Admiral Holland was deliberately closing the distance with Bismarck to cut down on plunging fire because he knew the deck armor could not withstand the shells from Bismarck. If, as you say the armor of his ship would withstand the shells from Bismarck, and that plunging fire was a myth, then why get so close?To answer the OP question, and I'm going to use American battleships as examples, it depends on the ship. Earlier ship's armor was optimized for short range engagements and flatter trajectory shells. As ranging and gun technology progressed and engagement distances became more distant, the element of plunging fire became more of an issue. Some Wikipedia entries of American battleships show you armor schemes. The later battleships show increasing angling against plunging fire.As a general rule, however since I don't know how the game calculates armor schemes, the flatter the trajectory, the increased likelihood your armor will bounce it. The more vertical the trajectory, the more likelihood the shot will go through decks, superstructure, or turret roves which have less armor than hull sides and turret faces.

@ComputersAreRealCool8 жыл бұрын
Is this more of a defensive tactic (as in when you are just trying to survive, since you lose your rear guns at more extreme angles), or should you do this when battling someone as well?
@mariofan1ish8 жыл бұрын
+ComputersAreRealCool It's more of an offensive tactic in my experience. Yes, you lose some of your guns. But you also gain a lot of bounces, which make approaching to brawl range significantly easier. This works amazing in most cruisers, as if you can get close enough, you can just torpedo the target instead. It will hurt them badly no matter what angle they're at. Battleships make good use of it, too. In one-on-one battleship duels, the battleship with the better angling tends to win. If one unloads shots into the angled armor, they have a massive cooldown, allowing the opposing BB to swing around and bring the rest of their cannons to bare. Lastly, even if you're down most of your guns, if you're at a good angle and they're at a bad angle, you'll be able to score Citadels and high damage areas a lot easier than they can damage you.
@ussxrequin8 жыл бұрын
The best offense is a good defense. As you wither down opponents with your guns on their exposed areas, their shells become less effective against your angling. If you need extra firepower, wait until they've fired their guns to turn your ship in order to get rear guns to line up. Fire, and re-angle.

I hope u reply to this but does it help that u are getting so many citadels cuz u have massive guns, I am at the tier 5 Kongo and get citadels and aim for the spots but not as many as I see you tend to get, is that because the higher penetrating guns can go through any side amour when the Kongo struggles to get through the new York's hull sorry English isn't my native tongue.
@ichasegaming8 жыл бұрын
+david collings It's a lot harder to get citadels now, the citadel spots are the same but now they require the shells to actually penetrate into the citadels for it to count (so citadel armour plays a much bigger role now). Back when this video was made, shots hitting the top of a citadel would register the hit even if it didn't go in fully. Still if u aim correctly you should still see reasonably consistent citadel hits.

Leonardo Franzin Ribeiro Shoot destroyers and cruisers with guns, torp anything slow and fat. Trouble with the US destroyers is they have tiny, pathetic torpedo's. The guns are pretty decent though, so really, just go around and focus on taking out enemy destroyers and lightly armoured cruisers. If you see a battleship or slow heavy cruiser going somewhere they can't escape torps (like a channel), THEN go for a rush in and torp, but make sure you have smoke ready.

Leonardo Franzin Ribeiro You may want to give the Japanese destroyers a try, since they're far better at ambushing than the Murican's. The Sims is a great little destroyer killer with the guns it has, you can do laps around other destroyers (since your guns turn so fast, most dont!) and totally wreck them. Now a Jap DD (T5 Minekaze) for example, has worse guns. but torps with 10km range (6km at start, but almost 70 knots!) and a 5.9km spotted range. You can literally spend half the game circling out of their spotting range and firing torps off at them (they reload fast too). I spent about 15 minutes and got 2 kills without ever being spotted a few days ago.

Scoom-kun ...And then they buffed HE shells through the Stratosphere, making all of this irrelevant immediately. Now a Cruiser just loads HE, hits any Battleship for 5000 to 10,000+ damage per salvo, and starts fires that automatically burn for 20,000 damage with no way to stop them.
@ADMIRALTIA9 жыл бұрын
Personally I don't think its the HE shells that's the problem but rather the one time then dead repair button. They really need to come up with a better repair system because the current one is just bad. After you've used it then get set on fire or flooded a second later you might as well be dead already.
@Arclite029 жыл бұрын
Scoom-kun Very true - the automatic Ultra-Death fires are seriously not cool. But seriously - it's incredibly frustrating to be in a Battleship, get spotted by ONE CRUISER, and then... 3000, 5000, 4000, 2500, 3500, 3000... All in the span of one reload. Even single shells of Destroyer-caliber HE are good for 1000+ damage against any Battleship, regardless of armor, no matter where on the ship they hit. Fires may be worse, but this is just idiotic.
@Javaman929 жыл бұрын
I found this interesting but all the time I was listening, I kept thinking, but what about the arc? I've heard that some ships have a high arc and basically can be coming mostly down onto your deck, which is lighter armored and of course almost flat to the trajectory.

Javaman92 It is possible but since most combat tends to be done at a shorter range where the belt takes the majority of the hits (max range vs. effective range) you won't see too many deck hits :P

Ok angling is the optimal situation. Could you defeat this tactic by using HE and firing into the superstructure?
@ichasegaming7 жыл бұрын
Armour angling can be negated somewhat by HE, as long as the HE has enough penetration to go through the raw armour thickness. So for example 152mm can penetrate armour below 25mm. So if armour is 25mm thick, 152mm shells won't be able to penetrate that armour. However, if 152mm HE gets IFHE then it goes up by 30% at the cost of some fire chance. This means that 152mm with IFHE has 33mm of penetration, this will allow it to penetrate 32mm of armour. Also firing AP at the superstructure can work too :D

Angling is a very helpful thing when fighting guys using AP. But is there a way to countermeasure those OP HE beasts (Cleveland)? Angling ain't helping. Even in Amagi you'll have a bad day if you won't kill her with two salvos. Plus there are many, many BB players shooting HE too. I would like to rename battleships to torch-ships instead :< It's easier to dodge 3 torpedo waves from bombers than avoiding HE shells from Cleveland (while sailing on BB). So much for the balance in CBT >:P

Dartharion HE will eventually be fixed, so AP will eventually be very important again

Of course, once you get far enough away, the ship's positioning is moot as gravity is angling your deck and belt armor on your behalf. The concept of an "immunity zone" was well known. This was the region where the target was too far away to penetrate its armored belt, but too close to penetrate its armored deck. Folks are also ignoring the fact that hitting the superstructure and upper hull is not an effective way to use AP. While AP shells were typically heavier than their HE counterparts, the penetration capabilities of AP ammunition comes at the cost of its explosive content. To give an extreme example, the 16" Mk 8 AP shell of the North Carolina, Iowa, and Montana weighed 2,700 lbs versus the 1,900 lbs of the 16" Mk 13 and Mk 14 HE shells. However, the heavy AP shell only had a bursting charge of 40.9 lbs versus the 153.6 lbs of the much lighter HE shells. In addition, the AP shells had longer fuse settings for insuring that the shell only exploded after penetrating its designed thickness of armor. If you don't hit heavy armor, your AP shell may very well pass completely though the target ship before exploding. WW2-era Japanese AP shells were notorious for this, as many had extra-long fuse settings designed in hopes of penetrating the hull under the waterline when shells fell just short of the target.

In a BB? Use AP and citadel them :) in a CA do the same, in a DD, torps and run ^^

Good episode as usual ;) But you talking "only" about ships side-armor. Whats about long ranged shoots and deck-hits? WG is talking about an immunity zone where ur ship is maximum resistant vs both of this hits.

how about they all using HE?It does not follow this rule what should i do in this "HE everywhere" situation? and i saw you said several times"HE will be fixed" what makes you believe that?
@wetlettuce47689 жыл бұрын
sam cheng If they're spamming HE just curse as they start multiple fires and piss your self laughing when you destroy them in a single AP barrage then realise the repair module won't be ready in time before the fires kill you.

What about "plunging fire"?
@DubbleTwice9 жыл бұрын
tamenga88 Interesting. I understand that the Hood was likely steaming towards Bismarck as fast as possible to avoid the plunging fire. (I believe its deck armour was weaker as it came from an era wen ranges were shorter and thus plunging fire less of a risk) I feel this would be an interesting game mechanic. Do you think this is in fact replicated in game?
@DubbleTwice9 жыл бұрын
be cool if they could manage it. Night action. That a great idea! lol .... fog of war fun ... "ships passing in the night" ... lol star shells. A lot of cool mechanics and tactics could be involved. Gets my vote.

So obviously most of the video deals with "hull shots", aimed with the intent of breaching the Citadel - which obviously gives great results. But how does the superstructure react to being shot at an angle. Obviously most superstructures are composed of different angles, but are superstructures also less armoured and therefore a good "HP Mine" during angled combat? Finally, as others have already mentioned, doesn't the current perceived "OPness" of HE make angling less relevant?
@ichasegaming9 жыл бұрын
Col MacHopper the superstructure isn't going to result in too much damage, as for HE, it'll get adjusted. It's too OP right now
@colesweet84789 жыл бұрын
How do I counter good angling?
@infetrus9 жыл бұрын
cole sweet Move away to change his angle or fire HE - you'll do some damage and start a fire insted of bouncing. Personally if i'm in a battleship and i need to deal with another battleship but he's stubbornly angling, i'll fire HE at him. Still most battleships have to show their side to fire all guns.
@ussxrequin8 жыл бұрын
Armor does not affect damage from high explosive shells. Additionally/alternatively, one could attack the opponent's superstructure.

Smart video, but there's no need for that minimap math. All you have to do is point your guns at the ship(s) you're angling against and look at the ship model in the lower left corner. There, you can see your ship angle vs. your target exactly. :)

Until HE Shells are fixed Armor means little right now Just HE spam too Win. If the BB's in this battle had a clue and used HE you would have been burnt down in mins.
@CrnaStrela9 жыл бұрын
Kyle Mackay with BB ridiculously low rate of fire? I don't think so HE totally effective against low armored target but with heavily armored target like battleships the damage would be just too low, even the fire won't do anything if it occurred. Plus battleships at that tier mostly would take fire prevention setup and I'm 99% sure there won't be any of the battleship get pyromaniac captain skill, so the chance of chase burnt to death by the fire of 3 battleships if they decided to go full HE is totally low.
@bnadit19499 жыл бұрын
Arleran yea but the 1-3k constant that HE does with 1 SHELL will kill you very quickly
