Considering Jean Bart and Alsace have very high secondaries DPM and high fire chances, if you put the correct build you can have basically a flamethrower. Forget penetration, and go for fires per minutes !

the DPM is pointless since the secondaries are 100mm, and are therefore too small to even pen 19mm superstructure Not to mention the hull they're mounted on is prime real estate for any cruiser with a brain to just farm to death while staying outside 12 kilometers, something cruisers generally do with all BBs, not just the secondary ones. Imagine getting Jean Bart, a ship with more main battery firepower than most ships could ever dream of, and tossing the guns out in favor of making the ship an ignitable damage pinata for cruisers. Couldn't be me.

I use secondary build on Richelieu , Alsace , Republique & Burgugone , simply because with right build that mean quicker reload , and i play a loot of Ranked where someone is in range of your secondaries , and quicker reload = higher DPM , is no brainer .

i only have alsace as a secondary french bb but i love this build. brawling is my thing and suck shooting anything at range. i do my best when i'm medium to close range. screw the meta. have fun.

Honestly, I think *every* battleship should have disgusting secondaries instead of a nation or two with special gimmicks. Its a friggin "BATTLESHIP" and any cute little bote or teenage ship that wants to get close needs to know that getting near a BB is bad news bears. Plus it'd be more fun ya know, more brawling, more of the "getting stuck in" kind of game. And if anyone cries about it, they probably got too close ._.

@@BPKPhoenix I just wish they had a more historical range with secondaries. Not 5-7 km but 15 km to make them more historically accurate. Make them gain accuracy the longer they shoot at a target to balance if needed

I remember chasing a Freisland across 1/3 of the map and just letting the secondaries whittle him down as I fired the main guns at other stuff

I've done extensive testing with secondary build French BBs in training rooms and learned two things. First, they're much better than conventional wisdom suggests. Second is that IFHE actually makes a significant impact, especially against bow in targets like the DM and Kremlin I was testing against. Theoretically it shouldn't, but I saw a real change in average time to kill against a DM from 3:55 to 2:48 with the addition of IFHE, despite the loss of fires. The loss of fires did increase TTK against BBs by 1min, though so it's really a tradeoff.

That psychological panic when secondaries start peppering you is a real thing. My Groser Kurfurst is mostly a tank/main gun build but I run the range skill and module for the secondaries so as soon as I get within 12.5 km they start shooting. Almost everyone tries to get away from you just by reflex. I usually get a few full broadside shots per game because of it.

JB secondaries are great when you can turn the rear toward the DD or sub - can take care of things usually pretty darn good. He got secondary kills and THAT matters - especially if they are DDs or a sub or a light cruiser.

I did grind up the French BB line with a secondary build, but this was when manual secondaries were instantly accurate and IFHE only dropped fire chance 3%. Back then I'd say they'd have definitely been worth it, they deleted damaged DDs often the moment they got spotted because they weren't expecting it. Still have old replays on my channel of the Alsace doing some real secondary work on everything in sight. In my video titled "Battleship Alsace - Secondary Specced - (211,246 Dmg + Kraken)" the first ship I sunk was an Atlanta I caused to rage quit from getting hailed by secondary fire because his 13mm armor got melted like ice cream.

Secondary builds are actually OP for most mid-level players because the fun and intense feelings of superiority that come from doing well in them increase a player's capabilities, making them perform better overall than with a meta build. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

A few years ago I put 11 14" shells from my New Mexico through the hull of one of the German light cruisers, and all 11 were overpens. It was at close range, and he immediately killed me with torps.

It's Alsace, you aim in the general direction and pull the trigger, if you aim low you are just begging the terrible accuracy to put it all into the water. Keep in mind Alsace has a 1.6 sigma.(aka the average T6 sigma) That leads to your shots being more luck than judgement most of the time, and when you do miss completely if sucks thanks to the 32 second reload so it's in general better to just hope some shells go short into the cit and aim for the upper belt, then aim for the cit and hope none go short, in the T9 Battleship with the worst accuracy.

The point of secondary builds used to be that they were basically never the optimal build, but a funny one. I think some of the magic diasppeared with the introduction if the German BC line, for which a secondary build actually is the best one, or at least just as good as a survival build.

I got the Wujing from the containers provided by the Summer Days Event. And I originally started out with a secondary build. And you wouldn't believe how devastating the secondaries are on it. Especially since the Wujing is an Alsace. And a secondary build certainly makes up for the guns.

I ran with a secondary build on my Alsace. I had a lot of fun that way. The shock and awe of secondary hits out at 12 km was enough to annoy and confuse the enemies. I do it on my Jean Barts (regular and B). It doesn't hold up with the Republique, though. People know better.

I use full secondary spec with the skill that makes the main battery reload faster once a ship is spotted in secondary range. It surprises people when you pop that reload booster and you have a 9 second reload on you Jean Bart.

For funsies the last time WoWs was allowing captain respec's for free I setup my Jean Bart for a secondary build and had an absolute blast with it. Lots of kiting so I could bring at least 2 of those big secondary turrets aft into action, but still fun to see DD captains cry about melting.

At some point I was playing my Cherbourg and commented to a friend “I can’t wait to get my hands on a Brest.” The response I got was “I can’t wait to get my hands on two!” I do wish the secondary builds were more viable though, my Jean Bart is set up similarly

Aye I wish Wargaming would ether buff secondary pen, or give the option to load in different ammo types at different reload rates. For example on Alsace you could keep the stock HE for the 100mm guns and it reloads in the stock 3 seconds, or you could swap it for AP that reloads in 5 seconds, or SAP that reloads in 8 seconds. Same could go for the 152mm guns, HE 12s, AP 16s, and SAP 20s. Just to not over complicate things it should be something you pick in port, but that would give a decently big buff to other nations secondarys without having to change their HE pens at all. Imagine if you could load AP into Atlantico's 234mm secondarys and SAP into it's 127mm secondarys, that would be silly fun. They wouldn't even really have to worry about secondarys getting to powerful because you still have to close to knife fighting range to use them.

I only got secondary build on one frenchie, and it's the Flandre. Mainly because it got a ridiculous amount of them. 37 in total, compared to Bismarcks 28.

Yes, he also seemed to aim a bit high on several occasions which of course means more overpens since the velocity is too high for the shells to plunge into the armor deck or the citadel roof or anything else that would arm them.

It’s not always how much damage they do. As you said, getting hit with a rain of shells can make enemies do stupid things and let you do more with your main guns :)

I have a "semi" secondary build on some of my Italian BBs. I don't know why but I just want to give the enemy more shells earlier when they're getting close. It also gives the feels of a DD deterrent effect knowing that my secondary battery can reach out further. I have an Oklahoma and that is also a "semi" secondary build. lol

I have secondary spec on my French BB's mostly because with their speed and rapid fire, I'm the guy that'll load the HE, slam the engine boost and charge full speed into smoke screens. I started this with my JB years ago to amazing effect. Especially once you flip the switch on the reload boost after you catch the DD with his pants down 😅 Anyway, the secondaries (as you stated) have a massive psychological effect on DD captains. The rear mounted secondaries are also great for countering any brave pills or man pants a DD captain might suddenly find while they try to chase you down

With the IFHE it is actually really good in terms of secodaries, the reduced survivability forces you to play like a cruiser tho, until the right moment arises, and then you absolutely DESTROY DDs and cruisers with it. I prefer a more or less regular build with focus on survival and the guns, also the Brisk Skill that gives you a motorboost while undetected. That combined with your motorboost consumable will get you to 40 knots while undetected and you can get into some INSANE positions early on. Depending on the map those positions are straightup broken. So while the secondaries are everything BUT weak, the guns are the real highlight of this ship, they are simply amazing.

There is way to make this build a lot more effective by just switiching one 4 point skill. Go from sec accuracy to increased main reload when something is in sec range and the huge french sec range can actually work in your favor.
