Since all of these paper battlecruisers are based on candidate designs from the 1919-21 program, we should be looking at the early to mid 1920s to decide which names were free. The pre-dreadnought Duncan was decommissioned in 1919, and the first destroyer Duncan was commissioned in 1933, leaving a reasonable window where a new capital ship could have beaten the destroyer to the name.

The St Vincent is definitely named for Admiral Jervis, Earl of St. Vincent. And sure, they could have named it Jervis, but there's already a Jervis in World of Warships. And HMS Jervis was a highly decorated destroyer with 13 battle honors. She's more deserving of a place in World of Warships with the name Jervis than a paper ship.
@alganhar1
@alganhar1 2 жыл бұрын
@@ashesofempires04 There is a bit of a difference between a paper design well on in the design process and many of the other paper ships out there which were little more than concepts. The St Vincent design did exist. At least one of those British Battlecruiser designs was actually laid down, two of them to be precise, but were cancelled due to the Naval treaties. You do not lay down a ship on a few notes scribbled on foolscap. At that stage you are looking at full sets of blueprints, with guns and machinery already decided on and ordered BEFORE the keel is laid down, as the machinery and guns are the two longest lead items on a large gun capital ship.

St. Vincent in WOWS is the I3 battlecruiser design with a late 1930s modernization. The previous HMS St. Vincent, a 1908 dreadnought, had been scrapped in 1921. Had an I3 actually been built, it would've been laid down around 1922, at which point the name St. Vincent was not in use. And thus the training facility at Forton Barracks would've needed to be named something else when it was opened in 1927.
@genericpersonx333
@genericpersonx333 2 жыл бұрын
Especially relevant is that HMS St. Vincent of 1908 was going to be scrapped irrespective of the treaty negotiations because its guns were 12'', thus considered obsolete for battleship purposes. A lot of capital ships scrapped in the 1920s were only scrapped to meet the requirement of the treaty, so without the treaty, those names would have remained on the books while most of the 3-series capital ships were being listed. HMS St. Vincent was one of the few battleships definitely not going to remain on the lists.
@troopieeeeee
@troopieeeeee 2 жыл бұрын
@@genericpersonx333 what capital ships do you think wouldn't have been scrapped without the treaties?
@RedXlV
@RedXlV 2 жыл бұрын
@@troopieeeeee Without the treaty, you likely have an arms race going. That's *why* the treaty happened. Ultimately the QE and R class battleships would've been retired sooner than historically if there'd been no Washington Naval Treaty. But in the short term, the 13.5-inch armed Orion and KGV (1911) classes and HMS Erin would've lasted longer because it would've taken at least decade to build all of the huge new ships that would be replacing them. Not a decade for each individual ship, but for the entire new fleet to be built. There were only so many slipways capable of building N3 battleships and G3 or I3 battlecruisers, after all.
@genericpersonx333
@genericpersonx333 2 жыл бұрын
@@troopieeeeee Based on the immediate post-war assessments, the Admiralty was only clear on the 12'' gun being inadequate for continued service on any vessel, especially Line-of-Battle Ships. That means every battleship before HMS Orion was definitely being removed. From there, I suspect the Royal Navy would keep most every other battleship, but would slowly cycle them through to lesser roles as time went on, replacing the oldest and weakest ships with new ships as soon as possible. Bear in mind, by scrapping the 12'' gun, that is a dozen capital ships gone, so it would take time for the Royal Navy to get enough new ships to replace that lost capability before they want to replace more capable but still obsolescent ships they did keep after the Great War. Thus, I suspect they'd keep all the battleships from HMS Orion onwards, but would scrap the oldest ships as soon as a new ship was ready to slot in. So in HMS Orion's case, it'd likely have been replaced before the late 1920s, with her sisters following soon after. Odd ships like HMS Erin and such were technically supposed to be given back to the countries they were "borrowed" from, which most did, but any rejected by their lawful owners could be "kept" by the Royal Navy. I suspect HMS Erin would have remained like the Orions, but not lasted much longer because of its 13.5'' guns. By the early 1940s, I suspect most all of the great-war battleships would have been replaced and gone, with maybe a Queen Elizabeth or two remaining because of possible delays in new ship construction.

Jingles, at the time these ships were designed 1920-21, all those names were either available or becoming available (due to decommissioning of existing ships) for new build ships. As for the ships never existing, two units of what WoW's call HMS Duncan were laid down in October 1921 only to be cancelled by the Washington Naval Treaty three months later.
@RedXlV

All of the British battlecruisers except Hawke are real designs. Rooke is J3, essentially just an improved Hood. Duncan is G3, as you said the design that Britain actually selected and began work on prior to the treaty. (Though with semi-fictional guns. The 16.5" was actually intended for G3, in keeping with the Royal Navy's established trend of increasing gun caliber by 1.5" when adopting a new gun. But fairly early in the design process they decided on the 16" instead.) And St. Vincent is I3, the design immediately preceding G3 before they decided it was too big. (Both in terms of being expensive because of that size, and because it was physically too long to fit into many of the Royal Navy's major ports.) Hawke on the other hand seems to be loosely based on K3, but downsized to have 16" instead of 18" guns. I honestly don't know why Wargaming didn't use use the F3 battlecruiser at Tier 8 instead. That's a treaty-compliant battlecruiser design that was considered as an alternative to Nelson (which was the O3 design), which was armed with 15" guns in an all-forward layout. But the turrets are Mogami-style and should have even better firing angles than Nelson. For anybody wondering about these designations for the designs, the numbers denoted whether the design used twin or triple turrets. And for the whole design series, battleships began with the letter L and went upward, and battlecruisers began with K and went downward. Several of the designs had both twin turret and triple turret versions (L2 and L3, F2 and F3, etc), while some such as N3, G3, and O3 were only ever considered with triple turrets. And the Tier 10 premium battleship Thunderer that we've had for a while now is basically a Wargaming mashup of the L2 design and HMS Vanguard.
@Vinemaple
@Vinemaple 2 жыл бұрын
According to Drachinifel, when they want to reuse the name of a training hulk like HMS Unicorn, they go ahead and do it. They just temporarily rename the training hulk something else so the name can be given to a modern warship. Also, if they'd really built the I3s, they'd probably have looked like the Nelson class. The design looks like this because it was abandoned early.

I believe St. Vincent is a nod to the speculation that the N3's may have received names that align with the patron saints of the countries of Great Britain that comprised the United Kingdom at the time. "Though far from receiving names, the four vessels of the N3 design have since been associated, albeit speculatively, with the names of the four patron saints of Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales, those being HMS St. Andrew, HMS St. George, HMS St. Patrick and HMS St. David respectively." Mostly in the WW1 era, the USN would sometimes rename a ship that had been relegated to lesser duties in order to make the name available for a new ship. This happened with several armored cruisers named for states, to give standard type battleships the names. Other ships as well, and I think sometimes a ship was simply stripped of its name.

There is a detail on this map that annoys me disproportionately much: The active volcano is using an animation that looks a lot a standard burning animation, with billowing fire and smoke. Vulcanoes just do not look like that, there shouldn't be ANY fire, but fountains of lava instead. Everytime I see it, I can't help noticing it... I know it's stupid but my brain doesn't allow me not to notice lol.

Quick point on St. Vincent specifically - she's named for the saint, not the island named for the same saint. This was a real proposal for naming the G3s, and also included names such as St. George and St. Andrew - the various Patron Saints of Britain.

This ship is very obviously based on the G3/N3 designs which (if built) had armour that even a Yamato would appreciate. So why is the armour in game so pathetic? Oh that's right, it's a British ship and WGing's mission in life to to make their ships third class compared to fantasy Russian daydreams.
@Stephen__White
@Stephen__White 2 жыл бұрын
It's based on the I3 design, and given that design only had 304mm of belt armor I'd say Wargaming giving it 330mm-356mm is actually them up armoring it a bit. So the armor would not have been even remotely comparable to Yamato's 410mm without Wargaming giving it some extra armor.
@dzello
@dzello 2 жыл бұрын
What? Conqueror is a great ship, Thunderer is the best ship. Goliath is amazing, Mino is extremely good. As for Daring, it is one of the best. To say British ships are third class makes you a delusional at best and a lunatic at worst.

The G3 design had, as a battlecruiser, armour comparable to the Yamato. The N3 battleship had armour that would have put the Yamato to shame - basically it could take on a Yamato in a 1-to-1 and probably win hands down while laughing as the Yamato's 18" shells bounced off its belt.
@Stephen__White
@Stephen__White 2 жыл бұрын
@@alanhughes6753 Problem is this is the I3 design, that had fairly terrible armor that was as I've mentioned above nearly 100mm less belt armor compared to Yamato.

Ironically, after doing research on it, the Iowa (irl) actually had a better turning circle than the Fletcher class (850~ vs 930~)
@alganhar1
@alganhar1 2 жыл бұрын
Length to beam ratio is why. Destroyers have much longer lengths in comparison to beam, its one way to increase speed without significantly increasing displacement or machinery. Which is fine in destroyers. Battleships main reason for being is those big guns, so they tend to have much shorter lengths in relationship to their beams. Partially simply to take the sheer size of the turrets, but also partly to increase stability for accurate gunnery. Thing about length to beam ratio is while a high length to beam ratio increases speed, it also increases turn radius. Which is why many battleships are actually surprisingly agile for their size. That low length to beam ratio actually cuts down their turning circle. Of course, with a ship as big as an Iowa actual turning circle is only part of the equation. The other part is exactly how quickly can you get sixty something thousand tons of battleship to actually START turning. The much lighter Fletchers while having larger turning circles are much smaller and respond much faster to rudder inputs, so they end up more agile despite that longer turning circle.

Regarding the names, you can also re-name the old ship. The French had 2 "Jean Bart" battleships, with the first being renamed to Ocean when the 2nd was being built. While I can't remember a British example at the top of my head, this certainly could be possible, with this St. Vincent being a replacement for the dreadnought St. Vincent instead of the onshore base it got

Why is it a Glass Cannon? the whole point of the G3 design was to fix the issue with the battle cruiser design issue, it was supposed to have 15 inches of Belt armour and 8 inches of deck armour over the Magazine (Hence the all forward armament to reduce weight on armour). What makes it the most interesting of the Washington "cherry trees" is that it represented similar capabilities to the Iowa class (9x16 inch guns, 30+khts, and better armour) but 20 years earlier. The Nelsons were a very cut down version, being 15 thousand tones lighter than the design, and Rodney still ripped the Bismarck apart...

I have to say on the tier 9 BC for the British line is fun to play with a secondary build. 6 inch guns have 26mm penetration base kit although they are not great, they are not bad. And the tier 9 has a 113mm gun close to the bridge unlike the ST Vincent which is much better then having them all at the stern. Although the 113mm deal purpose guns are fairly weak but the can make destroyers sweat bullets because the fire somewhat quick compared to the orginal British battleship secondary guns.

I think this is the least surprising in the game. All it is is another long-range he spammer, but this one also has good ap as well--and in a British bb--what a surprise. I think the most interesting thing about this ships name is the real class of this design was the St. Andrew making this the The H.M .S. St. Vincent of the St. Andrew class. The only odd thing about it having torpedoes is that with having any torpedoes is good torpedoes. By the way--the Washington Treaty nurfed this ship into the Nelson class( who would have thought --I finally knew something Jingles didn't, it's enough to make a man post).

The Zao at the end… I seriously feel bad for veterans of this game who have to play T10 with these players. I’m fairly new to the game (Bismarck and Amagi player) and I make a fair number of mistakes such as pushing at the wrong time or aiming poorly, but I never ever ever do shit like not switching to AP to a broadside cruiser, and I don’t have a single T10 ship. How do people get to T10 and not learn this??? I know in every game people complain about dumb players and everyone has a learning curve, but WoWs is honestly astounding…

To be fair with the names, let's think that if these ships would ever been built, their original name owners would be also destroyed by Germany or Japan. I mean, USS Hornet (CV-12) were laid down in 3 August 1942 while USS Hornet (CV-8) Sunk 27 October 1942. 14:47 it's a bit hard to be undetected, while the enemy use Radar. :D
