With the ability to read his opponents, Eskimo says, if the cards fall even he does well. He couldn't get a read on his final opponent but the opponent beat him with a three-part strategy: gradually become increasingly aggressive, exploit the big man's tendency to chase his own money, and make unorthodox plays to screw up the standard card-fall/betting-patterns of standard play. This one on one wasn't a card game, it was a psychological contest.

I think he was past his prime here. He was about 60 which is never ideal, even Doyle declined but amazingly managed to keep things very close. Would love to know more about this guy's life. Served in Vietnam as a medic which sounds easier but is often one of the bloodiest and can be one of the most dangerous jobs too, depends on whether the enemy cares what your job is. As far as I've heard, never had kids, never got married. When he won he staked a bunch of poker players, and not all of them were good. So when he went on a bad run he needed a stake and didn't seem to have much shame to ask. He even once posted online he wasn't forcing anyone, they were free to pass him by. Maybe it was just a sad dull life, but I bet there was more there.

Yeah, poker was a lot more fun to watch back then. So many interesting different personalities with their unique look and play styles clashing with each other. Now everyone is like a carbon copy of each other, and all play like a computer the exact same way. They may be technically better players, but it is more boring to watch.
@D.D.-ud9zt20 күн бұрын
@@pauldavis5665 Very very few are better players. They might be better at NLH, but Eskimo could play any game at the time at a high level. Most players today can't. i suspect someone like Ivey can and a few others, but most are just NLH robots. I will have an all night party when that game dies even though I win at it (marginally these days) and lose at the other games. Hard to get better though when everyone just wants to play one variation.

What a stupid play by Michael, the last call, having 4 × Js, putting All In. It does not matter what cards your opponent have. I in perhaps 100,000 games, you gat 4 of a kind. Really stupid, had he put in USD 50,000 or 70,000, he would be richer by that amount.
@MESSAYZEUDU Жыл бұрын

37:20 Just so the younger folks know, this bit wasn't scripted; people like this *actually* played these stakes back in those days. This final table is super typical of tournament of that era; chock full of tell-heavy amateurs who would get crushed in today's $1/$2. And the rules still made sense back then, to boot! It was heaven, man...
@ToxicAvengerCleanYourMind3 жыл бұрын
When you play tournaments there's still plenty of people that play like this. Players are tougher but not everybody plays the same. Some people have tells with their betting patterns. The only value bet with the nuts, but will over bet with a bluff for example
