Squidge Rugby is the channel that explained rugby to me for the first time four years ago as an American who didn't grow up with it and had no idea what was going on. I'm a living breathing example of growing the game (I subscribed to Peacock Plus in September with the sole purpose of watching the World Cup, so they are making money off me). I feel so lucky that I was able to see the South Africa video before it was taken down, because it was fantastic. The whole situation with content creators and copyright this World Cup has been disgraceful.

Watching rugby in the USA has been very frustrating. They showed it on Peacock, but they only showed the game from kick-off. Sometimes literally seconds after kick-off. No build up or getting some pre game commentary. We rely on channels like this to get a feel for the game and get in the buildup. Thank you for your content!

That was really only the case for replays. When I tuned in to catch matches live, they generally started from about the time that teams stopped their warm-ups and returned to the locker rooms. @@bnations2000 You are attempting to re-write history. I know what I saw on live streams from Peacock Plus, and it was rare for any match that we got to see any of the anthems, just the Aussie & Dan Lyle. Compared to previous RWC it was a travesty.

That's what produces the players ... what produces the attitude is the history and byproducts of national service. Before sports science and energy drinks ... there were oranges and coaches / players who's knowledge of tough training was based around the military training they'd received. The higher the ranks of rugby, the more intense the training, getting more and more to the level of special forces ... physically and mentally. That is the stuff that gets single point wins week after week when everything is on the line. And it's long been the DNA of South African rugby.

As a South African I was obviously always going to be paying attention to the Springboks in a Rugby World Cup. But 100% because of channels like yours and Squidges I was fully invested in teams like Chile and Portugal. This HAS to be a benefit for World Rugby. Also as much as I love Squidge's analysis etc... it was vastly inferior trying to follow what he was describing with stills only during the RWC.

I was so impressed with Squidge's video and the team's breakdown of the final and how much respect they have for Rugby and South African rugby players and having that video removed is not right!!. I wonder if it was due to using World Rugby Footage and not even audio...Honestly I found This 2023 World Cup coverage lacking compared with Japan's coverage in terms of match highlights and replaying of matches...You guys, Egg chasers and Squidge did a great job covering it!

The point about the value of shorter form content on social media for young people is 100% true I know personally if I’m on Twitter and I see a tweet with a 20 second video of a big play in an NFL match, there’s a good chance I’ll turn on the TV and watch it live. Most of the time when I see a tweet about rugby it’s “This video is unavailable in your region”

As a Safa living in Finland I can say there is also one simple way to grow the game. Commentators! I had many people come up to me and say well done on the win! Surprised I asked them if they understood what was happening and the answer was “not really it would be nice if the commentators weren’t biased to one side and explained a bit more what was happening”. It made me think of Eurosport’s coverage of the indoor cycling at the last Olympics. I never knew anything but by the end of the races knew the difference between the races and even started to follow some of the riders on various social media platforms. Just another way to grow the game!

An idea for the next world cup/ growing the game: Take the bottom ranked teams and put them into a pool (the development pool) so that they will only play each other, and award a trophy to the winner of that group. Allow that one team alone to advance to the round of 16 where they would be fed to the lions. Thoughts?

Eggchasers Rugby and Squidge Rugby are my favourite rugby channels. World Rugby is becoming like governments, more of a dictator focusing on their needs rather than the needs of growing the game and the fans. Many times after watching Squidge or Eggchasers I would actually go back and watch the games again to pick up on things. World Rugby is actually shooting themselves in the foot with their actions cause I think channels like Squidge and Eggchasers in the bigger picture bring more fans to watch the games on main channels.

World Rugby don't care whether the game grows, the people making the decisions in the boardroom are all in their later years and only care about controlling the media being released for profit; whether the game is global in 30-40 years loses them no sleep. This has been the case for many years and as a former rugby content creator who was struck down, I can't stand this corporate greed. The funny thing was, my content was for the Canadian Womens National team. Seriously. Do you think I created this content to steal profit from World Rugby? Even the players don't get paid. My only intention was to grow the game in Canada and for women's sport but instead World Rugby decide to strike me down, all the while releasing barely ANY content about them. Its insanity.

Great video as always Tim - very balanced. It's not just rugby though. I've been trying to find highlights of Glen Maxwell's innings in the cricket world cup but it seems impossible. You'd have thought that the cricket authorities would want it plastered all over the internet as it's such a great opportunity to highlight how great the sport is. On a side note, an independent singer/artist (Ren) recently got to No. 1 in the UK album chart basically by allowing (encouraging) content creators to react to his music online. I'm sure that there was probably a bit more to it but he grew a huge online following by doing the opposite to the RWC and CWC.

Great commentary, Tim. I have referenced your comments here (by name) on a World Rugby video about kickers hitting the uprights that had more commenters talking about the Squidge takedown than Marques of Portugal’s three doinks. Your take on this subject is spot-on. Back in 2008 (!) I had an original amateur KZbin video of tries in the Bledisloe Cup match that November in Hong Kong that I took with a Sony Handicam from the nosebleed seats, so I can relate to the stupidity of video content being taken down. (That was well before the era where people could monetize KZbin videos, but I had over a thousand views in less than a day, so I was understandably miffed….I’ve hardly posted anything since then!)

One point I’d like to make is that this year’s World Cup was a huge success because it was played in the Northern Hemisphere meaning the games were broadcasted live on terrestrial television during prime time. That certainly won’t be the case for the next World Cup in Australia. Given that the combined population of Astralia and New Zealand is less than 32 million and 11 hours ahead of us it’s nonsese that the World Cup should be held there. Indeed I’d go further by saying to grow the game the Tri Nations should be played in Cardiff, London and Dublin during our summer to keep the interest in rugby.

In Ireland, rugby is a minority sport and has to compete with other team sports (e.g. gaelic games - specific to Ireland). Televising rugby and producing watchable and entertaining content online is crucial to growing the sport. Luckily most of the rugby matches (that feature Irish teams) is free to watch on the TV... unluckily some games e.g. the Autumn internationals are behind a pay-wall (Amazon Prime). Other games (e.g . games involving England playing another team) are also behind pay-wall channels. If irish viewers cant watch their provincial teams play freely (in URC and Heineken Cup) ...it will erode support for the game here.

You're definitely spot on with the levels of interest in the International and Domestic game. As a welshman I'm definitely guilty of this and let be honest the Welsh regions are a hard watch at the best of times. I am so glad i got to watch it before they took it down. It was such a beautiful beautiful video! Even after your analysis as to why they took it down, i dont get how they got the heart to do it, after watching that video tbh. What a shame

This is where E-sports is miles ahead, I think. They recognised very quickly how content creaters play a very pivotal part in how e-sports is broadcasted and engaged with. So they created the concept of co-streaming, which allows specific partner content creators to provide commentary and live broadcasting through their own channel in order to build the hype and engagement around the games. I think Rugby can do something similar... At the very least allow specific content creators access to and the ability to use video elements of the game to continue to grow the interest. This will be especially helpful during the club rugby seasons.

Please don't take offense to what I am about to write. Squidge is the best rugby based KZbinr. Like at all. How he analyzes everything and explains it all is fantastic! Pity World Rugby see fit to strike channels that aim to help grow the game...

Hi Tim. Is there no option to “share” monetisation with a broadcaster? Like you said it shouldn’t be a zero sum game. If KZbin wants to be a top content viewer surely some kind of sharing would help. Squidgy does such a brilliant job in a very different way to anything you would see from a major broadcaster, I am sure that a splitting of the monetary proceeds would be beneficial to all. Thanks and keep up the great work you definitely added positively to my World Cup experience. Cheers from springbok country.

@EggchasersRugby, as always fair, partial, level headed perspective. If more people had your approach to all things in life it would make for a great world to live in. Thanks for the great content, looking forward to this channels growth.

I almost can't believe you actually have a strike from the Kenny video... I saw that video about 2 mins after you uploaded it and loved every second. About a week later I saw it getting reposted by other channels. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out the chronology.. what on earth is KZbin thinking 🤯

Love your podcast. Good luck with the coaching. I hope you got some great tips from Rassie.

Funnily enough...it has got us coaches thinking - what might the next innovation be? How can we 'think outside the box'? Rassie has changed the game

To notch as always. My understanding of copyright law is that you are allowed to use limited content provided - the source is acknowledged; and the content creator has turned it into something unique. So the strikes that have been given are disappointing. Love your work and that of creators like Squidge Rugby, because you all bring something different

Squidge is the best analyst of the game His explanation enhances the understanding and grows more informed fans. I think World Rugby are myopic Everyone benefits Whats their beef ?

Its a shame that kids don't want to sit through a whole game now. It was fun getting woken up in the middle of the night , heading into the lounge where mum had made cheese on toast and hot milo and watching the All Blacks playing on the other side of the world. The cat wandering in looking confused.

Fair play to you Tim for putting this out there. I've always enjoyed your content. I too am coach of U10's and U12's boys Rugby teams for my local club and try to do my bit for the game. I also received a copyright strike for a 9 sec video of Andrew Porter sitting on the bench making a funny face. It was a short with about 7.5k views but I'm not trying to grow my channel for monetary gain. I merely upload a few gaming videos and bits and bobs for friends and family and whoever might get some enjoyment. 2 more strikes and my channel and content will be gone. RWC are either money hungry or stupid that they're not allowing the sport to get more eyes on it, especially for the most important tournament in Rugby. Crazy. Semi-rant over !!

You need to visit places like Spain, Portugal, Holland and other European countries and make shows about their grassroots rugby as they are the next Fiji or Rumania. We don’t play much rugby in Andalucia but you’re quite welcome to stay when you visit Spain. Keep it up mate!

While I agree with a lot of what you’ve said, when it comes to a copyright claim, there are laws that obviously aren’t clear but loosely say if you only show small parts and “add value” - such as extensive analysis, like Squidge - the balance lies with the new content that’s been created as novel and not protected. Whether it’s TF1, WR or whoever, they’re misapplying the law. KZbin, as a self harbour, will take it down as soon a claim is filed, but he stands an excellent chance of winning the counter claim if he fights it. Making a profit can count against it, but doesn’t have to. You’re allowed to make money from derivative work as long as there’s enough novel material.
