Everything about the Goliath birdeater is big and terrifying: from an 11-inch leg span to a deadly venom that makes the organs of its victims to shut down and self-digest from the inside. Now see it in action.

The Goliath Bird-Eating Spiders aren't really dangerous to humans. They're big, yes, but their venom is not very well-adapted for affecting mammals, especially large primates like us. In fact, there are several tribes who even catch and eat these spiders as a delicacy, because they're relatively slow-moving compared to other protein sources in the jungle like birds and monkeys. The main trouble with trying to eat these is all those hairs on the Goliath's body; they can cause itching and irritation upon contact with the skin, so what the hunters usually do is hold them by their legs (where the hairs are fewer), and then just roast the spider over a fire so all the hairs are singed off, and then tuck in.

@kirksealls1912
@kirksealls1912 2 жыл бұрын
@@kemanorel3110 right, both a size issue, and also an opportunity issue. Unsurprisingly, tarantulas don’t fly, nor does any tarantula species - even the arboreal ones - leap from trees as a means of capturing their prey. Most tarantulas, including those of the Theraphosa genus, tend to wait at the mouths of their burrows and opportunistically take down prey that passes by. Therefore, it would have to be a bird walking along the rainforest floor, perhaps foraging for worms or the like, that found itself at the wrong place at the wrong time (either in front of the tarantula’s burrow, or otherwise near the tarantula if it does happen to be on a stroll away from its burrow). While this undoubtably occurs, it’s not thought to be a common occurrence, possibly especially given that tarantulas are nocturnal, while most if not all types of birds relatively likely to be eaten by tarantulas are diurnal (nocturnal birds tend to rely on their eyesight to identify prey from their perches up on trees, then swoop down for a quick attack; owls, for instance). Incidentally, the term “bird eater,” and its association with tarantulas (as well as “vogelspinne,” the German word for tarantula), originates from an illustration published by German naturalist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian in 1705, who observed an arboreal tarantula feeding upon a bird up in a tree. Based on the illustration, the species appears to belong to what is now called the Avicularia genus (most likely Avicularia avicularia), which literally translates to “little bird eater,” the name of the genus being a direct reference to the illustration*. I’ve heard it asserted that while Merian’s claim that an inveterate like a spider could eat a vertebrae like a bird was initially accepted, it would later be questioned during the Victorian era, until “The Naturalist on the River Amazons” by Henry Walter Bates was published in 1863 and included the illustration, but I’ve yet to find any original source for this. *- Technically, the species name “avicularia” was a direct reference to the illustration (described in 1758), with the original genus name for that species being “Aranea;” however the genus Avicularia was later created in 1818, and in 1928 the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature officially declared the name of the type species for the Avicularia genus as Avicularia avicularia.

I used to own a Giant Bird Eater. Had it for 13 years. There's an exotic pet store by my house that sells all kinds of spiders including the Goliath's. Mine had very potent urticating hairs but aside from that still very handleable. I fed it full grown mice, a dozen crickets at a time, worms, giant water bugs, grasshoppers... I got a hold of a Praying Mantis one time and threw it in there. Thought there would be an epic battle to the death but neither one was interested in the other. So I took out the Mantis and let it go back into the wild.
