Hi there Matt, first of all, nice channel work. Then, to the matter; In refference to the "dimmed central spot" mentioned in 8:00min, I'm sure you've tried this already, but have you think about adding a convex lens to concetrate and magnify the lumen area of the center? - www.google.com/search?q=convex+lens+torch+light&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 I think i've had simmilar issues trying some "smaller mods", and that could be due to the fact that the led surface itself is too big in comparision to the surrounding reflection ring, so the lumens concetrate around the centre instead the very central spot. Maybe the kind of lens I mentioned could help you. willing be helpfull, Keep on it, mate.

About the reflector: the diameter of the reflector has to be at least 10 times the diameterof the LED to prevent that donut pattern. I have done a lot of reflectors with a 3d printer, and now I understand that the LED must be small compared to the reflector if you want to get the pattern that you want.
@himanologanor40936 жыл бұрын
exactly, he`s missing the point: you use only one LED when you want to make a monster tight-beam thrower . But when the LED is too big it`s impossible to create a tight beam. You can get ~ 100 watts from a HaikeLite MT03 TA Devourer that has 3 XHP70.2 LEDs at $100 and 3 reflectors. In theory you can get a tight beam with a big LED like CXB3590 if you use a big glass lens instead the reflector, but the LED has to be far enough from the lens (orelse no beam) and it will lose a lot of light ( a led that type emits almost 180 degrees spread)
@timturk18996 жыл бұрын
@@himanologanor4093 I believe they have 90°, 60° angled lenses. Have you seen the video with the 150,000 lumen flashlight? Several COB's w/lens on each(maybe 8-12 COB's, each with spherical lenses). Also, very little light loss through lens(2%?), from what I've heard from indoor gardeners, who use 8-100W Cree CXB-3590's for a 5'x5' space. Mostly 1000W HPS lamps, have been used as highway lights(150,000 lumens), while the shorter poled street lights use 600W HPS lamps(95,000 lumens), but have a orange tint/glow, to give an idea of how dang bright these COB's are, and how much of a better spectrum! And some LED's are putting out 160 lumens/watt! Very bright, full colors, and replacing the HPS lamps as street lights, as they're about double the efficiency of HID(High Intensity Discharge) lights(HPS(orange tinted-2200°K color)and MH-Metal Halide(very white, slightly blue tinted, often used for gas stations, convenience stores, security lights-6500°K color). K-Kelvin(temperature it takes Tungsten steel heated to put off that color of light. So an orange/yellow tint(more efficient), or cool/blue tint(less efficient). I've seen COB LED's from 2700°K, 3000°K, 3500°K, 4000°K, 5000°K, 6000°K, and 6500°K. Probably more! But much better color spectrums, last 10X longer, much less heat/more light than traditional HID lighting. But you may know all this, so forgive my rambling.. Have a great weekend!
@himanologanor40936 жыл бұрын
don`t worry, i`m 100 times crazier than you when it comes to flashlights, i only have some things to add, everyone wishes a tight thrower and it`s not about the right colour there cause you can`t use that for photos. I know guys that can`t stand the blue tint but they are than the same that fall down when you use the strobe, so i guess it`s about brain wiring. Lastly i can`t use a huge lens cause of the weight, and same about the power, it`s only that much accu weight that you want to carry. So i`m forced to stay with my ACEBEAM X45 and its form factor : soda can accus and a nice beam reflector that in the end can fit inside a jackets pocket.

I think the amount of labor involved will not make it worthwhile. It is super amazing project light no doubt but not meant for business. You can get an MT09R that performs about the same in terms of lumens and throw for much cheaper than the labor cost required to mod the GT but probably the heat sinking on the MT09R is not as good as the on the GT and shorter run times.

Some questions: - How hot does it get when it's on? - How long do the batteries last?
@kepa1096 жыл бұрын
Good question..
@Arapaima6666 жыл бұрын
It will be very hot for sure and isn't able to output this power over a long time. Speaking of time: As we say he is driving the COB-Led on a forward voltage of about 36V @3,2A of current (=115,2W) and with the efficiency of about 90% this is drawing 128W at full power. the batteries are 8x18650 with 3500mAh each (for example i assume they really have 3,5Ah) so they have 8 x 3,7V (nominal voltage of each cell) x 3,5Ah (capacity) = 103,6Wh of energy. so we can say they can power the unit for about 103,6Wh / 128W = 0,81h..a bit over 48 minutes. I hope this will help you, have a nice day

There ARE however legitimately bright LED flashlight you can get from reputable companies. 1lumen has a real list containing the brightest reasonable flashlights for each category, immediately following with the top 5 brightest overkill manufactured flashlights in the world! I Much prefer a "knob" that turns, most people do. Direct feedback. _Really,_ try tossing the clickys on a pro style light. They would fit great in the tail with shoulders for protection. Or a low profile type turn knob at the neck. With knurling it would work fine. It would be a massive leap forward for flashlights. Toss the button! To fully negate that donut effect, you would need to put refractors in the reflector-bulb. Tis the same thing that's done with car head-lights. Tis why they have baffles in them, so the internal reflectivity produces a semi-coherent beam. Baffles do negate some of the lumen-output though, so it needs to be done smartly to get the best compromise between output and beam-uniformity. A light unit that does not reflect internally will never give you a uniform beam, no matter what you try. With the way it's set up, the reflector is only "catching" what little light reflects back from the lens.

He refurbished a previous light he had. Probably not too hard w/a shop like that! He then explains, and shows the whole process, except soldering the chip in place, where the tiny chip had been removed. They have solderless chip holders these days as well. Cooling is VERY IMPORTANT, and he explains this, but dosen't mention using thermal paste, or a thin piece between the chip and board with the paste spread well, or piece well, to heat sink/fan for lowering temps.

Also, the reason you have non-uniform light disgtribution is that the CXB3590 is not a single LED, but rather an array. So is not a "point source" of light. In the entertainment lighting industry, this is compensated for by collimators (or in the cheaper units, lenses). Nonetheless, this is a bit of a maverick hack, with a voltage multiplication circuit that most don't understand, but can now buy due the prominent display of their website on the underside of the PCB. I'm not really having a go at you, but just wish you'd make a follow-up to help people who want to make one of these safely.

@Matt Smith. 6 questions. How much is the hyperboost driver ? Where and how did you purchase the driver ? How much is your grand total from this work of yours ? Did you get a technician or expert to give you technicalities on this project ? Does this torch overheat ?
