It COULD fly anywhere in the U.S., except for a slight problem: the forestry service in Washington state won't let it. Anyone else have a small-minded forestry service?

I guess its a step in the right direction, but being anywhere in Colorado in 30 minutes means 1 hour round trip, throw in loading time and you've got 2 hours for more than 1 load, and thats not very good.

yes but compared to a BAe 146 with 3,000 gallons it's pretty good. They can still reload at any airport with a long enough runway.
@Agislife1960
@Agislife1960 7 жыл бұрын
Tim Mallette Agreed, but the 146 can land at just about any airport with some aviation infrastructure, the best aircraft for the mission profile according to the latest research would be a flying boat capable of hauling between 3 and 4 thousand gallons, something between the martin Mars and Bombardier, The people who study aerial fire fighting say when you consider response time, a flying boat is the most effective. Unfortunately new flying boats are pretty limited.

John Q Flyer It can use segmented drops, multiple drops on the same, or other fires in the state. loiter time is very good. It doesn't have to drop the whole load, then refill. that's what makes this platform so efficient. Especially on multiple fires. less planes in the air, and multiple passes. Awesome aircraft!

Drop Bear if they can pump it at the same rate as jet fuel, it would take about 20-30 minutes.

After the 747 comes back from a drop, it is refueled, water (more typically fire retardant slurry) added, and the pressurized air tanks recharged. Usually about 30 to 45 minutes to turn the ship around.

The biggest problem with converting normal aircraft is the time taken to return to a runway and refill the tanks. A converted seaplane such as the Martin Mars can skim a lake or the sea and fills in seconds - then a few minutes later it can come back for more! I bet even a helicopter with a bucket can drop more water over few hours as it can constantly refill.

@Murdered5.2 Ram Lasting all day on fuel doesn't help at all. One drop and that's it. I watched a forest fire being put out near my house in Portugal. A Canadair cl415 and a big Russian helicopter. They just kept popping back and fore to a local reservoir to fill up. The helicopter landed a few times on a road to refuel from a towed bowser.

You may want to re-check that, capacity is 7200 US Gallons and the names are Hawaii Mars and Philippine Mars with the latter now in Florida at a naval aviation museum. The Martin JRM Mars Waterbombers are so, so much cooler than this 747 though.
