World's Longest Dreadlocks: Guinness World Record
SUBSCRIBE: bit.ly/Oc61Hj
MEET hair fanatic Asha Mandela - whose 55ft locks are longer than a London BUS. But despite owning a world record, the 47-year-old wants to go BIGGER - even though doctors warn she could PARALYSE herself. Asha refuses to cut 'her baby' though - saying it has helped her overcome cancer, two strokes and two heart-attacks. Her hair weighs almost three stone - the weight of a reception-age child - and takes two days to wash and dry. She also worries that someone with a 'hair fetish' will cut a chunk off when she is not looking. However, there is one area it has not affected - her love life - and three-times married Asha even claims it adds 'a bit of spice'. Guinness gave Asha the title of world's longest dreadlocks in 2009 when they were 22ft long. But a new unofficial measurement this week (Aug 10) puts one particular lock of hair at 55ft 7ins.

Lol, I see a few comments in regards to clean hair from people of diff ethnicities who obviously don't understand our hair. So, coming from a natural hair African American woman, It is actually standard that people with African hair texture wash their hair once every TWO weeks in order to seal in the moisture. Our hair can get weak if it is washed too frequently and break. The more oil we have in our hair the better. IT is not Nasty for us to do that. We can not wash our hair EVERY DAY like other races can. So, for her to do it once a week, idk it may work for her...and I have heard SOME people doing that, but for the most part we only do it every 2 weeks. So, please stop thinking that dreads and afros and that washing our hair every 2 weeks is nasty, because you obviously don't understand that these hair styles are natural for US. If someone of a diff race goes that long w/ out washing their hair , idk ....but please try to understand other people's culture b4 you attack it !! What's natural for us may not be natural for other ethnicities.

True. I read that it's because of the nature of the stands. With straight hair, oil from the scalp makes it down the shaft very easily. When there's too much oil, the stands clump together and look 'greasy'. in some ppl like, that the frequent washing leads the scalp to over produce oil to compensate for dryness and they're back to Square one. With kinky or coily hair, oil from the scalp doesn't slide down the hair shaft easily so hair tends to be dryer/less lubricated, which is why oils from other sources are beneficial. Hair is washed to keep it clean not to prevent 'greasiness' since that's usually not a problem to begin with.

I'm so GLAD black women universally are going natural and proving the IDIOTS wrong who claim we can't grow hair lmaoooo.... we CAN grow hair however long we want if we leave DANGEROUS chemicals out of the equation. For centuries black women historically have actually HAD to conform to eurocentric standards of beauty to fit into society. Even to this day our natural sisters worry about will their natural hair let them get a job! But, from this day on, we will worry NO more! We will embrace our natural and everything that makes us Unique! I'm loc'd , natural, and PROUD.

Aliesha Goddessof LoveandBeauty In this decade of *healthy hair journey* even Relaxed hair Beauties have thick healthy growing hair past their waist. There are Facebook groups, Blogs and youtube channels showcasing their hair and show others how to properly care for their hair. As long as the hair is kept away from over-processing, harsh chemical products/ shampoos, excessive HEAT, overstyling and bad habits it will grow healthy and down to the waist, butt or thighs. It's about Celebrating Black Beauty not a divide of who is more black or natural, because at the end of the day mainstream media, television and the Beauty Industry couldn't care less; all they see is a black woman and their Negative stereotypical views pertain to of all of us. The HYPE from Natural Bloggers who used a few isolated incidences is the reason for their followers to fear getting a job due to their natural hair. *_For decades Natural Women have been getting jobs. Every job I've been to there was some people with either Dreads or loose Natural hair. For those who are worried then Slap the hair back in a ponytail or put it in a professional bun and you're done. Employers don't care about hair. It's your credentials, attitude and what's on your resume that counts._*

***** , Don't you dare disrespect my NATURAL HAIR JOURNEY. I grew my hair, MYSELF through all stages of locs, which includes the short/baby phase, the teenage phase, and the mature phase. And you're so uninformed, ignorant, and unintelligent that you don't even realize what you are saying. African afro/black hair is hair LIKE WOOL, it is a different variation of tight curls/kinks/coils. This is why our afro locks up so fast and in such a neat way. I know exacty what YOU'RE thinking about when you are referring to "woolies", which is a new trend that many white people who want locs are doing to make THEIR dreadlocks appear more neat and maintained. BUT, for BLACK people of AFRICAN decent, locs (growing out your own hair and letting it matt /tangle together) has been around since the dawn of time, since human life began in Ethiopia. And furthermore, you are not going to tell me that the hair that I have been growing on MY head is not real. You know nothing about me or my experiences. I am just happy to have stepped into my self and now I have knowledge of self, self love, empowerment, and consciousness. And that is something that YOU nor ANYONE else can take away from me or any of the other natural sistahs. We are defying stereotypes and growing our OWN hair long and strong, whether it's Afro or letting it naturally lock into dreadlocks, and no matter what ignorant repsponse you try to rebuttal, the fact of the matter is, This is my hair, I grew it, and I am PROUD OF MY CULTURE. Have a great day.
@GoddessofMusicTv

+face , Dreadlocks are our natural hair , which is Afro textured or "wool textured" that has MATTED together over time. There are many tribes in Africa with long hair. Look up the Himba tribe. Also, look up the "Repubzals of Africa" and have your mind blown. Also, there are MANY African tribes who believe hair is symbolic, for example I know many think it is attractive for the women to have a shaved head to MIMIC the FEMALE lion, while in retrospect they want the men to grow long locs of hair to mimic the MALE lion. Many times people don't understand African spirituality , so they look at things ignorantly. Look at all of these Nigerian women with their beautiful Afros. Hell, you can google or KZbin Black Natural Hair and see how the Natural Hair World is taking over, so much so that companies that make relaxers have went out of business or they started making natural hair products to stay in business. Lol, but people can ignorantly say what they want. Imma ENJOY my NATURAL HAIR;)

Kawaii Kitten nah it’d be impossible to comb out all those dreads. Even if you did (combing them out wold probably take years), most of the hair isn’t even attached (we shed a ton of hair everyday), it’s just stuck in the dreads. The little hair that is attached would be too thin, damaged, and brittle to be made into a wig.

Despite all the negative comments, I find this woman extremely inspiring. It takes a good deal of willpower and patience to let your hair grow so very long and maintain it even remotely well. Idk any women who are content with the same style year after year. They all change it, even a little, every few months and some can't seem to stop cutting it once it gets to their backs. Google female hairstyles. I guarantee you'll find hundreds of different styles. The fact that this woman resisted that desire to change the hair for 20+years is amazing and should be seen as a tribute to patience and determination rather then a retarded decision. Hanging by hooks is considered a spiritual experience as well and done wrong it is possible to get injured fairly well. But hundreds if not thousands do it every year to get closer to whatever they need to get closer to. There are still those that practice flogging in monasteries. Fasting. Scarification (sp?). So she's different. America claims it's free from spiritual/religious persecution yet here it is as usual. This is sad.. kudos miss for your dedication ^.^

The fact that loc’ing one’s hair is considered controversial, even in the black community, is absurd and very telling. I am 8 months loc’d and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I love her hair and hope to grow mine for many decades to come but she perhaps should take care of her health. Locs aren’t usually heavy but at her length, it’s no surprise that they’re putting a strain on her spine and neck so she should be careful.

Why are people int he comment section hating on this woman? Its her choice whether to cut her hair or not. Not yours. So no matter how much you say "this is disgusting", I bet people tell her worse and she probably doesn't give a flying F of what you think of her hair. So take your negativity somewhere else.

According to Guinness, a woman in China has the longest hair. Longest dreads? This lady seems to have accomplished this. She has more motivation and energy than I do. Personally, I'm too lazy to carry my hair around in a Green Bag, or to strap it into a car seat. She seems to really take care of it, and her husband helps her. Like it's a pet or something. I just love how people are different and they share it.

Natural oils from your scalp only travel down the hair shaft so far (about 4-5 inches down) so almost all of her hair is untouched by oils. She would probably only have to wash the bulk of her hair once a month to remove dust, like you would a wig, and possibly only using a bucket of water mixed with a liiiiiiitle bit of shampoo. Wax, twisting, and time is what dreads hair. Not dirt, grime, or oil. In fact, oily hair is harder to dread.

billions of small spiders would crawl out of course, that's how you make dreadlocks.

If that was even possible, she'd shed a lot of hair that broke by working it into dreadlocks. If there were enough people to untangle each on dreadlock, I still suspect it would take them more than 24 hours. The funny thing with drealocks is, you can grow those locks until get sick of growing them and still don't really have very long hair, since you have all the broken off hair in every single lock.

+ Jasmine Be you cant open dreads. Once the hair is waxed , you would have to cut off all of your hair to get rid of them.

end is nigh oh i didnt know that. normally when you have dreads you cant comb them out or the comb would break because of the wax that holds the dreads together.

her locks are stunning and it's incredible how she's been able to keep them going, but i think a lot of the comments are confused. her hair attached to her scalp isn't anywhere near this length, and no single strand of hair is as long as her locks. her locks are made up of broken off hairs that are essentially tied together.

You would not believe what the inmates come up with. She would most likely suffer many more searches than regular inmates but they can't make her cut it. Of course I can only vouch for the state I live in. Maybe it is different in other states. She would most likely wear her commissary bag over her shoulder or rig up a pillow case or sheet sling.
