World's Loudest Acoustic Bass : 3 Acoustic Basses Compared

We think our experimental micro bass (using the Godin Etude) with the TurboTail is the world's loudest acoustic bass. What do you think? This video compares the Guild Jumbo Jr bass, Taylor GS Mini bass & the experimental micro bass (ie, the Godin Etude classical with bass strings and the TurboTail). Love my Guild plugged-in. Best acoustic bass tone I've ever experienced, but you have to develop a light touch because of the low tension (~11lb per string). The Silverbacks are heavier (.115-.049 vs .090-.037). Combine that with the longer scale on the Godin, and you're bound to get a wider dynamic envelope.

I am sure that Guild could come up with a much better bass than I have using the TurboTail and a classical guitar. In fact, Guild and Cordoba are both owned by Yamaha Music Group. So, Guild could just use a Cordoba Sound board with a Guild guitar setup. I think that could be really cool.

@@TurboGuitar_ That'll totally ROCK. GCT-E is their model number. I think I would also tie Guitar string ball ends to the ends of them to help them seat better plus it'll allow them to come over the saddle at a sharper angle.

Aren't La Bella Silverback strings nylon strings rather than steel?

Thanks for your comment. Yes, the Silverbacks have a nylon core. However, they are super heavy. I sent a few test basses to some of the most respected luthiers in North America, and the consensus was that the TurboTail was working, because it protects the soundboard from all of that oscillating mass moving transversely to the soundboard. Plus, by eliminating the long dipole movement of the bridge by anchoring the bridge to the tailblock, the fundamental mode (transverse motion only) is accentuated and there are no competing motions of the bridge. The consensus is that this produces a more efficient bass frequency. We have a big backlog of videos to post, as well as many other tests to run. I will do a video of the same guitar, with the Silverbacks, without the turboTail, and show in slow motion the extreme toque on the soundboard caused by heavy strings. I am also ordering a heavier, custom made set of bass strings for the TurboBass. The tension is not as important as the actual weight of the strings in grams, or grains....This is a big breakthrough for acoustic basses. You can check out the Magma Transpositor Acoustic Bass. I think this is the best production bass made so far. It is a bit expensive for me to buy right now, since it is not very popular. I am focusing on comparisons with popular model guitars and basses. Where can I get that Godin bass? I went on their website and couldn’t find it. I can’t find any information about it on the internet.

Hi SJ. Thanks for your comments. You are not the first person to ask about the Godin Bass. I set that one up myself to prove that a lightly braced instrument makes a better acoustic bass. I showed it to Robert Godin last Fall, and he was really impressed. However, his sons are now running the company. So far, Godin doesn't make an acoustic bass. Hopefully, they will soon. You might drop a line to [e-mail] and let them know that you like the Godin TurboBass. The TurboTail works great with Cordoba instruments too.

@@sj8870 I forwarded your comments to Michel Belanger ([e-mail]). I always share our videos with Godin, and other manufacturers whose instruments we are improving with the TurboTail. So far, no one at Lowden, Breedlove, Godin, or PRS has said that they don't like what they hear. However, it is going to take awhile for this idea to catch on with the manufacturers, if it ever does. Have you tried the Turbo Tail with a Cordoba mini bass?

Thanks for your comment. No, we haven't tested the Cordoba Mini bass with the TurboTail. Since it is such a small bodied bass, it seems that the Cordoba was designed to be plugged in rather than to have the best acoustic projection. We are focussing our tests on instruments that are truly acoustic, designed to be played acoustically. If you can use a pickup, everything we know about acoustics is less significant. Best, Reyn.

You guys thanking the turbo can work on Cort AB590MF acoustic bass ? Is the mini abg of cort . A bit bigger then the taylor.

Hi Yonatan. The TurboTail removes tension from the soundboard, so a lighter soundboard can be used. In this case a classical guitar soundboard. But any custom soundboard can be made with less bracing, if you use a TurboTail. Cort has already designed their bracing. Probably, the microbes uses the same bracing as their acoustic guitars. It is strong enough that it doesn't need a TurboTail. If the bracing were lighter, the volume and bass response would be better.

@@yonatanShamir-vg7vu HI Yonatan. From what we know so far, the TurboTail doesn't improve the tone of "regular" guitars and basses. Most of the people who buy it are guitar builders, or techs, who have the skills to modify guitars. We are also in contact with a couple of guitar manufacturers. This is new technology, so we look forward to learning from the experience of others who do their own tests.

HI Rick. Thanks for your interest. You can order the TurboTail on our channel turboguitar.com. Please read our information. You can't put this on just any bass. You need one with a super light soundboard. So far, the industry doesn't make these. That's why we are converting classical guitars. Hopefully, we can interest a builder or manufacturer in building instruments with lighter soundboard bracing. At this point, we are producing video content to prove our point. @@rickcarlos7845 HI Rick. I just drilled down through the existing bridge. The outer strings are spaced as they were (about 58cm center to center. I measured the others. Hopefully, we will make a good video of how to do the conversion soon. Our first video was not good enough to post. Best, Reyn
