Nice. One of the most underappreciated palms for sure. Great understory usage there.

Needle palm looks great. There doesn't seem to be many about in the UK

It sure seems that way, they probably grow so slowly there it's not one worth having. Even over here they aren't readily available, I've only seen them for sale a few times.

Quite sad that these are disappearing in the wild. I have both needle and minor. Both are quite hardy.
@texastropics2 ай бұрын
Yes it is. I wish they were more common in the nursery trade.

Beautiful palms, looks messy but definitely something you have to add to your collection. How old this specimens are you think? In retail they cost a lot or money sadly enough
@texastropics2 ай бұрын
I would think they are in the 20-25 year old range. They are the biggest I've seen in person.

I grow both needle palm and sabal minor unprotected here in Cincinnati zone 6b. I'm of the opinion with you that sabal minor is hardier.
@texastropics2 ай бұрын
It seems like a lot of people in your area and surrounding ones consistently report Sabal minor being hardier. I have seen minor damage on my needle palms at my last house but never on the Sabal minors.

Probably similar in hardiness to sabal minor once established, but I’ve definitely heard they are more vulnerable when young. I’ve heard people say they can grow in 5b, which I find to be pretty ludicrous. You kind of need at least a 6a with decent daily highs in winter, and even the 7a in Downtown Toronto or Halifax is probably unsurvivable to them as the winter averages are just too taxing.
@texastropics4 күн бұрын
I agree with everything you say. Downtown Toronto, and the Niagara region are probably your two best spots outside of BC to grow palms, and I have seen them, but they're still going to need protection. They are currently in a wicked cold spell. Some people in areas like Southern Ohio have said they do well with Sabal minor.

I planted 2/1 gallon sized needle palms this year. Let's see how it does on its first winter. I'm in zone 7a
@texastropics2 ай бұрын
Good luck with those. When they are small they are more prone to spear pull, so I would give them some protection for the first couple of years.
@ward1compost2 ай бұрын
@texastropics At what temp should I protect them?
@texastropics2 ай бұрын
@@ward1compost any extended freeze or where the ground freezes. If its short dips at night time where you get a good rebound during the day they should be ok. I would protect anything below 25F, or if you expect freezes to last more than 24 hours. Some people will disagree with me, but for newly planted small palms outside their native growing range I rather be safe than sorry. Even a plastic bucket with an incandescent light string will should suffice.
