In this video, we take a deep dive into one of the rarest and most innovative Chevy small block engines to ever exist - this 5-overhead cam (DOHC) Chevy 350, built by the brilliant minds of Pete Aardema and Kevin Brown. This engine is an engineering masterpiece, inspired by the iconic 1971 Moser DOHC Small Block Chevy, and is designed to push the limits of performance with its advanced 5-cam configuration.
Originally conceived to offer improved airflow, increased efficiency, and enhanced power output, this unique engine is unlike anything you’ve seen before. Pete and Kevin’s expertise has brought this vision to life, creating an engine that not only performs at the highest level but also showcases the pinnacle of small-block Chevy engineering.
Pete and Kevin are allowing Greg Quirin to take this engine to the next level by integrating a fuel injection system and wiring up a Haltech 2000 ECU. This advanced electronic control unit will ensure that the engine runs with precision, delivering peak performance and reliability. The addition of modern fuel management technology promises to maximize the engine's potential.
Join us as we explore the technology, and hard work that went into creating one of the rarest small-block Chevys in existence. From the legendary Moser DOHC design to the final touches, this engine is not just a performance powerhouse - it's a true piece of automotive history.

@@arindrynI would presume the blank cam/ intermediate shaft also drives the oil pump. GM did a similar thing on ther mid 90's 3.4L DOHC V6. The block was very similar to the pushrod version but there were no lifter bores. The intermediate shaft was driven by a conventional chain and sprocket arrangement which gave the 2:1 reduction. The shaft went to the back and drove the oil pump the same way a conventional cam would. The drive for the pump was basically the bottom of a distributor.

Lingenfelter, Guldstrand and Callaway were getting like 475-560hp out of the LT-5s back in the 90s...from what I remember in all the magazines when I was a kid. Some were 6.3L strokers however, not sure what the max 5.7Ls made n/a. I would guess that engine should make every bit as much as an LT-5 so long as it has the head flow, cam timing and tune dialed. Amazing engine. I feel thankful to see it. I always enjoy when I see articles about DOHC Pontiac, Olds and Mopar 426 prototypes from the 60s.

There was an old Opel Kadet hill climb car over in Europe (it sadly catastrophically wrecked) that had an all-out n/a LT5 punching out well north of 800hp on race gas. It'd be a bit unrealistic to expect that kind of insanity out of this engine, but don't underestimate just how far modern engine tuning and good head flow can take it.

My grandpa retired from Chrysler in the 80s after running the R&D department for 3 decades. He built the full scale wood and clay prototype parts. He helped design the Caravan floorboards and the tailgate to the Rampage mini truck. I remember when he was given one of the Chrysler turbine cars for a month to drive and evaluate. I was on cloud 9 cruising down Groesbeck, Woodward and Gratiot along all the killer muscle cars. Hearing the turbine spin up was the coolest thing ever to an 8 yr old! I love and miss you grandpa!!! I like the *Quad cam +1* description in one of your earlier vids more. As I now understand it, the pushrod cam at its traditional location in the valley is only there to offer a means to make the belt counter-rotate, so that the original Moser counter rotation cams can work. The fifth cam isn't actually making any valves move. Initially it is as confusing as it is genious!

Pretty simple way to drive the cams & also retain the distributor drive. It also keeps the engine oiling system in tact without modification. Simple & common sense, not ingenious. DOHC isn't new, creative,(been around almost since the beginning of the internal combustion engine) or much of an HP advantage today. DOHC is worth more HP in very small displacement engines than bigger V8s, especially back in the 70s before racers started running titanium valves, lightweight but very rigid pushrods & the new alloy valve springs with a ton of pressure(Pro Stock VS are around 800lbs Seat Pressure). Valve spring installed height isn't determined by seat pressure now. Spring height is now determined by full lift Open pressure. The parts are so good today that ALL the sanctioning bodies force competitors to run a Rev limiter chip or a "gear" rule to lower the RPMs. NHRA Pro Stock are chipped at 10,500 with pushrod engines & NASCAR added a gear rule that has cut the revs back to 9,000 or below because they were turning them well over 10,000. RPM = HP & is only limited by the size of one's bank account. BTW, NHRA has 2 "Factory" classes, Factory Shootout & Factory X, now & the manufacturers are building the entire car, including the NHRA certified cage & engines. All the Shootout cars weigh 3200lbs, run GM Turbo 400 transmissions & Ford 9" rearends while the X cars weigh 2,600 lbs & run a manual transmission. The Shootout cars are 3,200 lbs & run 7.60s/ 185mph while the class record for the X cars is 6.95 & right at 200 mph.The Dodges & Chevies, with 2 valve pushrod engines, DOMINATE the Fords with their 4 valve DOHC Coyote engine. The LS engines are almost bulletproof, as Hot Rod mag has taken them all from "recycling" yard to dyno, changing only the cam & valve springs & adding a couple hair dryers to run major blow, all with a 150,000 mile junkyard engine with 95% original parts, including rings & bearings. They made OVER 1200 HP(limited by the stock injectors) with a 4.8 without grenading it & over 1700 with a 6.2. BTW, Chevy had an overhead valve V8 in 1917.

Arias in California has built several 454 and 502 big block Chevy's with 4 valve heads. Plenty of cars have direct gear driven driven cams that run in the opposing direction of the crank, from the VW flat four to the Rolls Royce V8 that came out in the late 50’s, that Bentley was still using just a few years ago. As long as the lobs were cut for that direction, the cams are not running backwards. Which begs the question, if these cams on this engine were designed to be direct gear driven, then are they running backwards now he’s belt driven them?

Stanley Meyer already did it. He had a hydrogen extracting system that ran off water. He drove from New York to California using ONLY 22 gallons of water. He went to a lunch meeting with some European investors and after taking a drink at the table he began choking and said " I've been poisoned" and died either enroute or at the hospital. His car and all his equipment and research was quickly all confiscated and was never mentioned again . The overwhelming greed of Big oil corps will never allow an engine that runs on water to be released and available to the public.

The belt arrangement to drive the cams reminds me a bit of the later Tatra V8s. The last Tatra air-cooled V8 to be produced was a naturally aspirated 4.4L engine which made nearly 400 horsepower, used in a few models of the very limited production Tatra 700 in the 1990s. One modified Tatra 700 reached 196mph with that engine.

nice video, you will get that running sweet. I do a bit with haltechs, needs lots of fuel taken out of the base table, and don't forget to calibrate your injector flow rate. also they always trip that crank error on startup. its just because it hasn't synchronised until one full rotation they always have that error. if it trips while running you have issues. best of luck keen to see it running!
@GregQuirin
@GregQuirin 2 ай бұрын
Thank you Luke, still struggling a bit with the HalTech, I pulled lots of fuel out on the base map and it ran much better, for some reason we can’t get the timing lights to pick up and flash on any of the spark plug wires but all 3 lights work on a different vehicle. Ran it several times yesterday and played with the cam sensor and now for some reason I only get spark during the first turn of the key, then no spark. Frustrating
@lukehoza9571
@lukehoza9571 2 ай бұрын
@ frustrating! Those ls coils run about 4.5ms dwell time make sure the ignition settings are right. Haltech have the calibration for them on their website. While cranking especially with the voltage drop it may not have enough charge time. Pull the plugs out and turn fuel off so its easy to crank. If you are getting trigger sync state to ‘running’ and ‘full’ while cranking, the trigger settings should be fine. From there adjust your tdc offset value to get no1 sparking on tdc. Remember it can be 180* out.

to be clear the lt6 and this engine are not identical in any way like this fellow said. the lt6 is a standard dohc engine this is a totally different engine type

That was such an odd statement to say they are architecturally identical. This engine can stand on its own merits without puffing it up to be something its not.

Cool looking old school engine. I thought a crank wheel with missing tooth is only used when you don't have a cam sync signal and can only run in wasted spark and batch firing of the injectors. If using a cam sync you should have all the teeth on the crank wheel and you will be able to run full sequential spark if the computer has enough drivers for that. If it's currently running in batch injection mode there is probably twice as much fuel being injected over what you are expecting because the injectors are firing every 360 rather than every 720.

Good to know! HalTech requires the missing tooth, just need to dial everything in. Injection is set up for sequential and ignition to direct fire. It’s a steep learning curve. Not your simple plug and play deal. I’m learning by doing. Thanks Greg

What an amazing engine.The only concern I would have seeing is that the intake timing belt pulleys possibly don’t have enough wrap of the belt which could be a issue with higher rpm bringing the 2 in valley tensioners lower might help but there might be some limitations due to belt design.i hope I am wrong but am sure somebody much smarter might be able to comment further on this 😊

Imagine this beautiful piece of engineering in a T bucket, Coupe or early pickup with a set of baffled Zoomies screaming out a sweet symphony of hotrod music as you go down the road 😊

"Zoomies" KILL HP on anything other than a blown fuel engine where the exhaust does nothing but get the gasses away from the port. There's a reason why 4 tube headers are on everything else!

That engine wouldn't fit in a Vega. WAY too wide. I put the first SBC in a Vega in central Illinois in 1973. It was a tight fit with a stock dimension engine. Width is just 1 of the big disadvantages of DOHC V block engines. This engine is probably wider than a BBC, which might fit in a tube frame race Vega but not a stack body/suspension Vega.

Being I'm old and a car nut I very much remember the Moser SBC engine and all the hoopla in the magazines. Back in the day this was all very advanced stuff albeit very complicated tech. So unless this thing makes like 50% more power than a comparable normal SBC all this complicated hardware is very much just window dressing. Today this whole concept has been refined and made very powerful. It's called the Coyote.
@bradgriffith4231
@bradgriffith4231 2 ай бұрын
I agree about added junk that deosn't make more HP. BTW, the Coyote is being dominated by the Dodge & Chevy pushrod engines in NHRA Factory Shootout & Factory X classes! LOL Chevy holds the X class record at 6.86 / 195mph. The Shootout cars run 7.60s/180+, @ 3,200 lbs. My buddy built & owns the quickest Olds in the country. His 2,200 lb Cutlas ran a 7.97/168 with a 555 BBC in it. Reher-Morrison told him his engine made 50hp more than theirs. He sold the BBC & is now running a 440ci small block Olds. It's run a 5.35/130mph 1/8 mile(equates to 8.20s quarter) geared to run the quarter with the SBO engine & has been the quickest Olds in the U.S. the last 2 years.

I'm well aware of what you say. I remember when Warren Johnson was the king of olds powered cars. Back in the day I was running Super Comp out of Denver with a 7.50 capable altered back in the 80's. So as a result I've spoken to Warren on a number of occasions. He was very secretive about his set-up. But my point was not that the Coyote is the quickest but rather the fact that Ford pretty much perfected the DOHC engine. Whereas the engine in this video looks like something from the dark ages. I realize the Ls's and hemis can make big power but when boost is added the Coyote comes into it's own. Where else do you see engine making 2500+ hp on 307 cid?

This has got to be the coolest thing I've seen other than the ohc 301 pontiac engine from the late 60s to early 70s. I never got to hear it run, but from what I know just as rare, if not less, test engines than the this 5 cam sbc. I also have a question, What is the direct purpose of the fifth cam. Is it running the injectors or something?

use timing light to check tdc without injectors hooked up. input value. 10 degrees advance. no need for adjustment mechanically
@GregQuirin

We are actually having trouble with the timing lights, very erratic when trying to crank and set initial timing. We’re going to try a different light today, but it seems like the RPM is too slow during crank, and the light often does not flash in order for us to determine the offset angle. Light works great on other engines with no problem. Timing light frustration. Timing light #3 today fingers crossed.

Im building a 426ci hemi with dohc and a double cross plane crankshaft, hundreds of other modifications but that's the basics, its going in my 67 2door VIP VE Valiant, because my friend managed to fit another big block 440 in his 70 VG, that has the same engine bay, but... even just a hemi needs more room than the 440, so I have a slight headache 😅
