I was trained a long time ago as a CNC milling machine technician. And I got really shiny eyes when watching this video! This machine is by far the best I've ever seen! And it is even relatively affordable! I mean, I can't pay it right now, but if I spend a year or two money for it ... This thing is affordable even for ambitious hobbyists. All others cost at least three times more. An absolute dream machine! Greetings from Germany!

Wow a lot of people complaining about the $5k price tag. I think this is very reasonable considering what you can do with it for the portability and function. Look at the price of a used full size 5 axis milling machine and associated set up costs (mounting hardware/space, transport to and into place, service, etc) and you might reconsider. This machine can make quality finished products in any room of your house!

@tatzecom
@tatzecom 6 жыл бұрын
What is a reasonable price for you? Just as a quick reminder, a machine that has the rigidness for hard materials like Circonium, Steel and Titan with a bigger workspace (100sqcm) will set you back around 75k to 125k, depending on the service you want, the milling tools you pick and the material you choose. You can trust me with the prices, I work for a company that makes these machines. Those are so expensive, you literally have to ask for the price since they dont display it on their website. Lemme know if you want more details. But seriously, this is a ridicoulous good price for a 5 Axis machine

Nice acquisition for the workshop Johnny It may be small but I think the main thing is the Precision of the unit you could buy an El Cheapo from China but it is made of Plastic gears etc with lots of backlash.I would suggest that you do a couple of things 1 Build a Container of some sort to hold the working unit and to stop Shrapnel traveling around your workshop 2 Vacuum the shrapnel away from the machine as it cuts It looks like it could easily get into parts of the machine that could do damage 3 maybe Cover the machine as well while it works to keep the shrapnel away from the machine Apart from that I cant wait to see what marvelous projects your Genius mind comes up with this machine All the best mate WELL DONE Tony From Western Australia

It's cool, but not a $5K machine for sure... When I watched them set one of the rails or align to the rotary with a machinist's square, I was very disappointed (Pocket NC has a video two on this on their website or KZbin channel). I work for a machine tool mfg, and we set the rails using high accuracy capacitance units and check with laser interferometers, not hand tools!

i'm a CAM engineer and I think you are doing pretty good for someone saying he is an amateur. just a little tip, it says you are going to fast/deep. I don't think so, the issue is just that you go from side cutting to slotting. especially with such a small machine, you should try to avoid slotting. it's simply not very rigid compared to bigger machines.

I know it's the ultimate temptation, but please people, don't use threaded things in a shear stress situation, you are applying the stress to the root of the thread. McMaster Carr sells a wide variety of things that are partially threaded and partially smooth for this kind of use. Shoulder bolts, Partially Threaded Studs, threaded pins, Screw Pins, Extended-Tip Set Screws; all of these combine a head, a smooth part and a threaded part, in various order and arrangement of diameters.

I ran one of these about 2 years ago. This CNC is functional but should only be used for novelty. It's a little confusing and difficult to get going, not super rigid (yes even for its size), and frankly, not as accurate as most parts which warrant 5 axis machining. I mean if you have an extra 5 grand burning a hole in your pocket and wanna use this as a conversation piece, go ahead. But frankly, it's just not very practical or useful for actual part making. I'm sure plenty of people will bandwagon it and pretend it's way more useful than it actually is, just like they do with Tormach.

100% the rigidity displayed here is the biggest problem - shortening the spindle alone would help a great deal.
@vejymonsta3006
@vejymonsta3006 6 жыл бұрын
That's a bit of a cynical outlook. Considering that 5 axis machines for real machinists will require you to have some history in machining, this is a pretty nice package. Yeah it's not the best thing out there, but for 5 grand you are getting a whole lot. Obviously it's not supposed to compete with a 100,000 dollar machine.
@WHJeffB
@WHJeffB 5 жыл бұрын
It's overpriced for what it is... The components look to be of good quality, but watching the video on how they assemble one, gave me a good chuckle (for reference, I work in the machine tool manufacturing industry). It's not meant to compete with large machines for sure, but you can buy bigger, more rigid 3-axis machines for about half the price. Throw in $1K or so for a fourth axis and you have a better, and more capable machine that'll to most of the work that this machine will, only more accurately, in harder materials. This is a novelty for those that have more money than most of us, than want it for the creativity aspect, than for actually making more than one of something useful.It's probably great as a learning tool though...

if you can make one then the time you spend creating one is worth more than the cost of buying one. also. the parts for making one will require one like this or one that is more expensive. this isn't exactly a catch 22 but it is a similar concept that integrates the cost of opportunity and recursive requirements.

I am in the market for a small CNC machine for scratch building model railroad parts. I currently model in 1:22.5 scale (lots of brass, plastics, etc...) as well as 1/5th scale. I have been a master machinist for over 20 years. Current shop comprised of large equipment, predominantly utilized in Aerospace Machining. Milwaukee Mills (3 machines), Okuma lathe with 20" swing, Southbend lathe with 10" swing, 2 Bridgeport Mills, Hardinge Tool-makers lathe, DoAll saws, Hydrotel, Turret Lathe, Moore JigBore (my pride and joy), and 2 Fanuc Matsuura CNC machines: a 3 axis and 4 axis (rotary table). ALL accessories for ALL machines at our disposal. These is nothing we can not make (just about). Clearly, these are all production machines with have withstood the test of time. Our shop has closed its doors to government Aerospace work, we now use the equipment solely for the model railroading hobby. I describe this NOT to brag, but, lay the background for what I am hoping to purchase. Although small parts for the 1:22.5 scale trains can be made on this equipment, holding 0.0001" in some cases, to 0.001" in all cases, I am looking to purchase "micro-equipment" to make the scratch building of smaller parts easier. Looking at this machine in the video, which is really classified as a vertical mill, it is the right SIZE for what I am looking for. I would like a manual mill and lathe in that same size range as well. I can not over emphasize this enough, however, quality is the number one criteria in my purchase. I truly believe that if you purchase quality, everything is not only easier, but, you only need to purchase things once. For example, why purchase a cheap chinese mic or vernier which is dead in a year when you can purchase an Etalon (Swiss) or Starrett which will last a lifetime (especially the Etalon, which in my humble opinion is the best in the world for measuring equipment). Many have commented on this video - MAKING ME VERY NERVOUS ABOUT COMMENTING MYSELF. However, many have mentioned other manufacturer to consider. I am looking for miniature machines which will easily hold a tolerance of 0.001" or better (+/- 0.0005" call-out). Rigidity is paramount. Materials are Steel (all types-CRS, HRS, etc...), Aluminum (such as T6- 6061), Titanium, Brass, Copper, Bronze, Cast Iron (various alloys), Not much magnesium or inconel any more. Also, various plastic from Styrene, ABS, Delrin, Carbon fiber etc... Obviously, end mills and lathe cutters have a lot to do with the machining - which I am not worried about - just need the machine recommendations. In terms of the BIG STUFF, Grob, a German company, produces some of the best in the world. Some say THE BEST (however, this is merely opinion). My personal experience with Grob is that the equipment is the best I have ever seen. Please take a look at that which I am referring to here: kzbin.info/door/J-k97LzLxl5uBJMAaO_P3Avideos. That link is to Grob's online video collection demonstrating some incredible machining. I am NOT looking for full-production equipment, rather, making one-off parts, or small runs of 10-20 parts required for a locomotive lets say (10 wheel locomotive requires 10 wheels, 10 journal boxes, 5 axles, etc... All easier if they can be produced on a CNC without needing to reposition the part and introduce error). After reading through the comments listed here, and pulling out possible machine options, I really wanted to engage in a conversation with those who have actually used the machines they are recommending and are actual machinists. Those indicating that they can "build a 5 axis CNC milling machine for less than $5000" and go on to imply that it would be "simple to do so" clearly have absolutely NO IDEA what they are talking about, and clearly are NOT machinists. I would appreciate you not wasting our time by engaging in this conversation. To make my point, a close friend scratch built (as a hobby project) a small 4 axis milling machine which was completely functional. The machine was 12" x 12" and about 10" in height. The build quality was incredible. It took him about 3500 hours of actual working time to produce the single machine. He went on to produce a 36 cylinder sleeve valve turbocharged aircraft engine, which is fully functional as well. That took about 8000 hours. So, we can clearly dispel ALL notion that one can "whip up a miniature 5 axis CNC in a weekend for under $1000". I look forward to recommendations for the above mentioned equipment. PS - JohnnyQ90: considering the impeller is one of your first projects as you indicated, you did a fantastic job! Don't listen to those who criticise. I would like to see what they have produced. To answer some points raised: the recommendation to utilize solid carbide end mills is a definite. I only use solid carbide end mills. For Aluminum, Zirconium (ZrC) coated 3 flute solid carbide end mills would be perfect for the initial pass. That coating is especially designed for Aluminum (amongst other things). Calculate your speeds and feeds, and take note of color and temp of the chip egress. Follow that up with a second pass with the exact same settings. It may appear as though it is NOT cutting anything, however, the first pass will cause deflection of the end mill (yes, even carbide). The second pass will mill the remaining material left due to deflection. Leave 0.005 to 0.010 material - DO NOT machine to finished dimensions! Then, change end mills to a 7 / 8 / 9 flute solid carbide AlTiN coated end mill running at a faster spindle speed to machine the remaining 0.005" or so of material. Make 2 passes. This is all VERY easy to do with modern CNC machines and software - most high end software suites have this built in. This will produce a MIRROR FINISH. Lastly, do not purchase end mills with a perfect 90deg edge - rather, purchase those with a small 0.0005" or 0.001" radii - This will produce a far better finish and increase tool life. You can purchase end mills with many different radii at the cutting edge. In 3 decades of machining, there are very few instances there I needed a 0.0000" 90 degree corner on the end mill. I can't even think of one off the top of my head. Injection molding dies would be about the only thing. (For those who have no clue about that which I am referring to in this paragraph, please don't bother responding unless you have POSITIVE information to ADD to the discussion. Thank you). Have a wonderful day gents! Look forward to your recommendations on miniature machines! Jonathan

3:00 My guess. If you would try this up-milling instead of down-milling it would probably be fine. If you want a nice finish, you can do a small fine cut with down-milling. Down-milling is the preferred way, BUT can create vibrations, that will be problematic for small less stable machines.

Alucard Pawpad I was genuinely asking not criticizing. The fact that he was able to program a circular cut in cartesian coordinates led me to believe that the machines perhaps didn't have a rotating table, rather than him not knowing how to use it. By saying he's an amateur I assume he was referring to ordering of operations and CNC best practices, not that he didn't know how to program a rotational axis. Do you see now?

you'll get better surface finishes with a a MUCH lower RPM. For that tool (what looks like a 2FL, 3/16 dia) go with like 1000 rpm and chipload of about .002/tooth (.004/rev) and increase your step down to 2xdia of the tool (3/8 in depth cuts with a 3/16 tool.) Then to really spice it up, do what I said above, but leave .002 on the walls and do a finish pass at final depth no depth cut at 1/2 RPM and 1/2 feed.

Its cool but not $5,000 cool. You gotta make a ton of stuff for it to eventually pay for itself. Other than that I'd rather just hire a machinist. It might be pricey, but if you only need a few things than it's worth it. Plus they'll do it a lot faster, so labor shouldn't be all to bad. My dad is a retired machinist that used to make parts for NASA and the military. To bad we don't have one of these things.

This isn't about it paying for itself (though it certainly could). This is a full 5 axis CNC horizontal milling machine for a price that's within the budget of hobbiests. Go price some full sized used ones and tell me this is too expensive. It even has a tool standoff sensor which is often a fairly expensive addon. Seriously, I'd rather have this than a GlowForge or 3d printer any day of the week. This also doesn't take a huge shop space to run. It would be cool if they made a matching CNC lathe as well of similar size.

Well a single run 5 axis part will set you back 100-200 bucks a pop so if you’re in this hobby, that would add up quickly. Also having complete control over manufacturing allows more freedom to experiment, and quick return times.

If you know how to find them its easy. I've hired a machinist a couple of times to make me special tools for certain projects. Didn't really cost that much. I just had to wait about a week so they could do it during their lunch break or after work.

@@wsbdapptv4667 The fact is that there are no 5 axes. We come in the world of 3 and only 3 dimensions. The earth is three-dimensional, the solar system is three-dimensional and the universe is three-dimensional. There are by convention the X, Y and Z axes with the translation and rotation movements in each of them, that is, I can "walk" on the axes and I can rotate on the axes. If anyone ever proves the existence of a fourth or fifth axis, he will surely win the Nobel Prize in physics. Awesome! I just picked up a V2 last week as well, it's been great so far. I've mostly cut 6061 aluminum using the collet system and have found that 0.015-0.025 @ 15in/min and 0.075 optimal load seems to work good depending on the type of cut. it's much, much faster through aluminum than my Nomad 883. I love the solution for workholding... you just threaded a hole in the back of the 3" round bar? As far as 5-axis CAM in fusion, I've only used the swarf cut so far and it works as expected. You can also add 5 axis moves (tool angle/orientation) to 2D adaptive paths iirc... maybe 3d adaptive. one of them :).

So. I have to raise the question if that fan is going to be balanced or if you have plans to get a machine that can balance stuff like that. CNC is only as precise as the code going into it and in larger scales or high RPMs it would be possible that a lot of damage could be done. Love how compact that CNC machine is, definitely going to be useful for you.

exciting! do some research on adaptive cutting and how best to set up toolpaths for HSM (high speed machining). If you plan to work in aluminum, get yourself some Zirconium Nitride (ZrN) coated tungsted carbide endmills. Places like Lakeshore Carbide sell them, but so do many others. Use as short a tool as possible, and if possible take deep cuts with very shallow stepover. This is a small machine so it may be difficult, but always try and cut with an inch per tooth (IPT) of 0.001 or millimeter per tooth of .025. This will help prevent the cutter from not having enough material to make a cut. If the IPT is below 0.001 sometimes the cutter will merely burnish the material and generate lots of heat and vibration which will destroy your tool's cutting edge. The deeper cuts (i.e. more axial tool engagement) allow you to make more use of your machine's spindle power and longer tool life as cutting with the bottom 10% of the tool will render it useless very quickly. For more information you can check out the NYC CNC youtube channel or find a Sandvik Coromant technical manual (should be available on the internet). Good cuts + good tools will make you a happier person. Remember, shallow and slower isn't always better. Have fun with your new machine! I can't wait to see what you do with it.
