@atsantori4997
@atsantori4997 2 жыл бұрын
You’re both correct on some level. The density of the fibers In the leather midsoles they use are super tight grain. Brand new leather is super ridged and not very pliable. When they soak it down, it allows for the awl to penetrate the underside of the material(welt side) much easier, then the curved needle comes through the top and pulls everything tight. Soaking down the soles matters more so on a brand new unstitched welt, than on the repair/rebuild process. I can’t tell you how many needles I’ve personally broken trying to stitch a pair of soles on a brand new welt without water.

What is the real difference between this $550 pair of Nicks compared to a $350 pair of Red Wing (Iron Rangers)? both are handmade with full-grain leather.
@TheDagraner4576
@TheDagraner4576 2 жыл бұрын
The leather thickness and usage for the most part. Red wing uses celastic toe covers and canvas vamp linings where nicks uses leather for both. And the construction method is different. Red wing is 90% good year welts and nicks is always stitchdown that I am aware of.

Ok, so I have both, and I’ll take this opportunity to weigh in. If you’re wearing the boots casually you may not notice a huge difference, but if you’re working in the rain, climbing in and out of equipment, loading logs, or doing regular farm work you will know the difference when you get home and your feet don’t hurt.

The three nails down the center of the insole attach the insole to the last during lasting. You can see them at 12:10 but they're gone a few seconds later. They're removed to allow the last to be removed from the boot. The nails that go in at 9:50 are temporary, just to hold the upper in position while the glue between the upper and lining dries, and are removed so the upper can be turned out and stitched to the midsole. The nails around the heel go through the upper, lining, and insole, and they clinch against a metal plate on the bottom of the last, which you can see at 18:59. These nails stay in and hold the boot together. Rose Anvil has a bunch of great videos about Nicks Boots, including one where he counts all the nails. Check it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGalmpeLl6-LeNU

Seems like lots of new boot models from Nicks, but they all seem to be substantially the same. With the exception of the full perimeter sewn tactical and waterwork, I see nothing new from Nicks. For example, what is new about the motorcycle boot, or this farmers boot, that make it unique and tailored to its intended purpose? I detect more KZbin marketing than actual innovation.
@mayfell6092
@mayfell6092 2 жыл бұрын
I mean, the Ranger boot is not really a new model and they are making exceptionally great boots so I don’t see a reason for them to go out of their way to change much in their process of the boot making and risking lesser longevity. I can agree on the hooligan boots that they seem a little unnecessary but it’s the small differences that make them different models e.g. the builder pro and the hotshot being the same boot from the construction. In fact you can customize the builder pro to the exact spec of a standard hotshot but ultimately you are paying more in the end.

Agreed. However I think Nick's is maybe changing their ways when you order MTO boots on their website. For example, I initially ordered the urban logger 8" with honey vibram and 67 last, with English Bridle tan leather. But when I went to change my leather choice to the new Double Stuffed Harness, all I had to do was to just click on all the individual specs for my boot. There is no need to have a model name. Just choose a MTO boot. Hope this helps.

@@dabunny2409 why? it's a boot, not a specialty tool. how many different ways can they take cow leather and turn it into a shape that you can put your foot into? At the end of the day, every boot they build is exactly the same aside from cosmetic differences in height, sole and leather. If that bores you, don't watch the videos.
