I always use a mini set of bolt croppers to deal with dead chains… save ya park pins, bolt croppers good for those old locks that need removing too. A must for the tool chest / wall

this is a great series, there's so many cheap vintage bikes out there either for sale or being left to eventually be thrown in the dump. I have the abilities to fully restore them but most people won't even bother because they think it's too difficult or too badly rusted. Hopefully those people will watch these videos and give it a shot. There would be so many more cyclists and people that can't afford a new expensive bike would be able to get riding with a cheaper restored vintage bicycle.

Loving this series! As the owner of a similar vintage mid-80's World Sport that I resto-modded a while back, I have to say that these old bikes are great and worth the effort to keep from the dump. I might even go as far as saying there are days I prefer riding the old Schwinn over my modern carbon road bike. Keep up the great work with these vids!

Just picked up the very same bike down to the color wanting an old steel bike. It rides so nice; the feel is so good I'd never change it. I think I'll go through it and try to keep it going. It works, they tired are just shot. Love the channel. Thanks!

I've learned a lot from your videos - and I've put it to use while completely rebuilding my bike this winter! I love this channel and I wish you all the best for 2022!

Ha! Ha! Did something like that with my early 80s Panasonic. With the long horizontal drops no idler was needed. I had the same chainring bolt issues and also reached into my old parts box! The ancient early freehub by Shimano also aided my efforts. A pair of hacked road bars made bullhorns completed this project. Great entertainment value!

I would have restored it to being as close as possible to its original setup, cleaning up what could be salvaged and replacing what couldn't. And of course gotten rid of the spoke protector. But this does inspire me to build out a classic steel bike from the various parts I salvaged from my old '82 Trek, basically everything but the frame, fork, handlebars and wheels (although I do have the front hub). And to be honest I was never entirely crazy about those parts, being heavy and clunky.

Yo, can you make a video about shifters? I wonder how they work
@minuteman41993 жыл бұрын
I was thinking maybe using a bench grinder to make them a bit shorter? Where do you find parts like those spacers if you haven't got a lifetimes worth of spare parts stashed away?
@ProthoPectore3 жыл бұрын
yes you can grind down the bolts that are too long. time consuming, tedious. look up chain ring bolts online if you want to buy new ones. you need to measure and add up the thickness of the chain wheel and the thickness of the crank arm spider that the bolt will go through. good luck. try not to grind of the tips of your fingers.

Spacers, or just shorter nuts and bolts, are available wherever bike parts are sold.

Most bike shops will have shorter chain ring bolts. Many started carrying them when mountain bikers and cyclocross racers were ditching the front derailleur and going 1x.

Could I use ASC-1 for such threads? 6:40
@parktool Жыл бұрын
Sure could. They often come with thread locker on them as well. All are good options for chainring bolts.

come on! take a grinder or a file to that driveside dropout. I got no problem w/ idlers on vertical dropouts, but on nearly horizontal one's they are a crime against singlespeeding nature & negate the fixed gear option.

I’m new to Biking. So chain rings,spiders etc are standardized and Interchangeable?
@parktool3 жыл бұрын
No, nothing much is "standard" around bikes. If the number of spiders match (3,4,5,6) and the diameter of a circle formed by the bolts match, then ring will interchange. But there are many many variations.
@tomneufeld64773 жыл бұрын
No not always. One thing to note is the BCD (Bolt Circle Diameter). Even if you have a 5 arm spider you might have a 130 or 110 BCD crank/chainring combo. I learned this the hard way on my own World Sport restoration a while back. The SR cranks on my bike where a 5 arm 130 BCD and I had purchased a 110 BCD ring that I tried to install. Did not fit and lesson learned.

on an old bike i restored from the 1950s-60s (still no idea what it really is) the chain was so rusty i could snap it into a bunch of pieces by hand!

Serious question here, does anyone have any ideas of what to do with thousands of spoke off-cuts? The obvious answer is to sell it as scrap metal but we're not talking industrial quantities here so the money barely covers the time spent disposing of it. A much better idea would be to use them for something that makes use of their current shape/form such as an art project perhaps? To explain, I have a wheel-builder friend who also sells spokes at any/custom length (using a Phill Wood spoke cutting/thread rolling machine), he has boxes full of waste spoke off-cuts ranging from a few mm to 20cm or so (1/8" to 8"). Most of the waste/off-cuts are from the threaded end but there are also plenty of bent/rusty/cut-too-short spokes with a J-bend. FYI, we already have more 3rd hand/chain-holders than you can shake a stick at...

A local coffee shop uses old cleaned up spokes as stir sticks instead of spoons.
