anyone else here interested in hearing Calvin's whole story?! I'd be super interested to hear how he got into wrenching and how he got his start with Park Tool!
@Cledus20002 жыл бұрын
I thought I read he was the bike mechanic for the 1984 men's Olympic team. I could be wrong. But if that's right, that puts him up there with the best.

I've been all week having issues with my bike so I binged almost all tech tuesday and other video procedures. In a few days I'll be checking a buddy's bike before taking it to an actual mechanic because we're short on cash. Park Tool's videos have sparked my interest in being a bike mechanic, which, if I told my past self that, he would've laughed his ass off, because a week ago I didn't even know how to ride a bike

Calvin, you coulda used an ordinary toothbrush instead of that giant Part Tool brush, ha ha! Also, the idler looked too tight to me, making rear wheel removal harder and adding friction. Two more links on the chain would be better. Not complaining. These are great videos and a great contribution to the bicycling community. Thank you.
@bikeandsee16472 жыл бұрын
A delight to watch. a) it also has been of iterest to me to see that you do not use a Magic Link to connect the chain. b) it would have been of interest as well to hear you about the specific sprays, oils, psstes you used. Cheers.

That frame has campy style drop outs. You could get proper single speed tension without an idler. Removing axle, flipping freewheel spacer to non drive side and redishing the wheel allows for a proper BMX freewheel to be installed with good chainline too.
@parktool3 жыл бұрын
The dropouts are not "campy style". The drive side does not permit horizontal movement. Move spacers is a good idea, but not needed in this one case.

I know you guys like to use your brushes, but for real, a tooth brush would be way better for cleaning those small, hard to reach parts/areas where your humongous brush cannot reach. Other than that, i was already expecting he would be playing with the max/min screws of the derailleur, i just did not expect it to go so much forward. Overall: Nice job!
@Cledus20002 жыл бұрын
Very true. But it is park tools channel. That's why you see it an official park tools bolt bowl, lol. Seriously, they make great tools but they are expensive. He probably has $8.7 million worth of tools behind him there.

I would always use a master or quick link even when it's only 5 or 6 speed chain. I was around when there was no good alternative and a few came apart!
@forgetyourlife3 жыл бұрын
You were doing it wrong then. 5,6 and 7 speed chains never needed one.

7:10 Did he really pour chain lube on the mounting bolt for the tensioner? Am I stupid or is this not what you should do? I feel like you should put thread lock on it and not chain lube...

Can someone help me with my problem, when i pedal my roadbike and try to freewheel, the crank and chain and cassette spins with the wheel like a fixed gear bike. How can i fix this? Many thanks.
@parktool2 жыл бұрын
Either the bearings in your freewheel are seized up or there is build up of something behind your freewheel that is preventing it from freely spinning. Spoke protectors, grass or a shoe string behind the freewheel could be what you are dealing with. Inspect this and see if there is anything you can see.

U shd hv put the CHAIN on the Derailleur Pulleys and the Chainring b4 you actually cut it to get the right amount of tension. The Derailleur looks to be stretch to its max limit. Not good at all.
