I'm impressed Jack, normally and more likely 99% of the time, Australians are completely left out and forgotten about when it comes to our services during WW1 and WW2, only being clumped up to and only referred to as "Commonwealth forces". From our heroic and imperative actions at Gallipoli all the way to the Western front in WW1 to our final stand off with the Japanese at Kokoda in WW2, we are continually left out of the history books and only remembered as a British fighting force. Great too see Australia being singled out for once. GG son.

Actually battalions are all from different parts of the country and citizens in case one gets wiped out If everyone was from one place and they all died in an assault then the loss felt from their hometown would be catastrophic.
@VCJacka
@VCJacka 8 жыл бұрын
+Gus Ramirez most Australian Battalions in WW1 were done on a state by state basis. For example the 14th Bn was made up by Victorians. It wasn't until their 20th-ish reinforcements did New South Welshman start to fill the ranks. It is very likely that childhood friends fought together, one of my ancestors fought with his brother and many more from their hometown
@Void6-

Gus Ramirez Im pretty sure a lot of men fought with people they were friends with in battle. In any case, let me rephrase that: "You killed my comrade who fought by my side and saved my life multiple times, but you did it in such a manner man... good job, im impressed! There :D

If you read the letters German soldiers wrote to their relatives back home many of them mention that they feared fighting Australians. It was known that Australians could sneak through no-man's-land in the middle of the night, infiltrate German trenches and snatch prisoners for questioning. In battle they were remarkably resilient too and were a very tough nut to crack. Some say that since Australians already lived in a country where you had to be tough to survive the climate, fauna and daily life they were already hardened. 1 Australian division stopped the German breakthrough in the 1918 Spring Offensive and repelled them *twice* despite being outnumbered and almost cornered. So needless to say the Australians saved the day for the Entente at a crucial moment. Canadians were good fighters too. Battle of Hill 70 is pretty telling. Inflicted almost three times as high casualties on the Germans than they took themselves.

Yeah, Pashendale. My grandfather got poisoned with mustard gas there. He died later in 1937, so I'm told. And it is true: the climate here is tough, so you have to adapt to being physically fit and sneaky

Us Aussies were feared and respected. We had a knack for getting a job done with ideas outside the box and thievery. Heck we "liberated" a A7V and brought it back home. There's a tale that in Yepers, a memo was circulating around that whoever brought in a german flaregun got a week leave. Well needless to say the British command had gotten flareguns in spades.

You know who else was a badass? That German engineer sergeant who captured Fort Douaumont. He could have just stopped where he was, but given that his orders were to clear all obstacles for the advancing infantry, and he considered the fort an obstacle, he decided to take it. He had his men form a human pyramid, climbed up into a hole in the fort, found a group of French soldiers and locked them in their barracks. By the time his commanding officers had organized a big enough platoon to take the fort, they found Sergeant Kunze in the mess hall that he took over, sitting down among his French prisoners, eating their food.

It would not be out of concept. don't twist it, it would be for lack of support of the current war, not JUST the concept. The world wars were just that, global conflicts that threatened the safety of the world in whole and not just in remote parts of it like today. so before everybody spouts trump, sjw memes, and all sorts of other stuff just remember that this modern conflict is generally disagreed upon by the public when compared to the world wars. everybody is so quick to jump to conclusions.

+jackfrags our ANZAC forces also had a damn good sniper in gallipoli - billy sing "Sing's marksmanship at Gallipoli saw him dubbed 'The Assassin' or 'The Murderer' by his comrades. He reportedly acquired the latter nickname due to his callous attitude towards the enemy. By early September 1915, he had taken 119 kills, according to Brigadier-General Granville Ryrie, commanding officer of the 2nd Australian Light Horse Brigade. Regimental records list Sing as having taken 150 confirmed kills, but on 23 October 1915, General William Birdwood, commander of ANZAC forces, issued an order complimenting him on his 201 unconfirmed kills." wikipedia also states that a 'Major Stephen Midgely' estimated sing's kills at ~300

You forgot the fact that his father was Chinese and many anti coloured acts had been introduced at the time. He was a roo shooter in the outback, so he was practiced at killing things moving at speed and moving up and down. I know that we are talking about world war 1, but you should talk about one of the most badass soldiers of world war 2. A French Canadian soldier by the name of Leo Major. He single-handedly liberated the dutch city of Zwolle, captured around 90 German soldiers, and got in a fist fight with 8 Gestapo officers killed 4 of them and the other 4 surrendered. All with one eye and while still technically recovering from a broken back. The things that I listed are just a few of the badass things that he did. He did a whole lot more from d-day to the end of the war, and even in the Korean war. But sadly no Victoria Cross for him.

wait. not exactly. during that MG nest assault he killed a small bayonet charge from german troops. he killed 7 with the 1911 as he has so many in a mag and some more with his rifle before that. he never attacked the MG nest directly as the commanding officer was impressed and surrenderd to him before he could even get on top of the hill and into the MG nest.

Imperial Scholar Expert You have the right to challenge, it just doesn't exactly match my claim. I'm more describing those who served as active combat troops in a time of war. Even terrorists fighting in the middle east to a certain extent. It takes a lot of guts to pick up a gun and risk your life to fight for what you believe in, even if you are a little insane. I'm not specifically talking about just any case where anyone has used a gun to kill someone, else I would have said "Anyone who has even used a gun before can practically fall under this title". Sorry if my ideas were communicated poorly through my comment.

Its actually not uncommon through out warfare to see massive amounts of soldiers surrender to a handful of people, VC recipients often have similar stories. Germans in WWII did it. Iraqi soldiers (i believe) an entire unit surrendered to an Attack Helicopter Pilot and his gunner as they approached their position. Remember a lot of soldiers don't actually want to fight and almost always don't want to die. Especially in countries where service is forced upon them or its a same way to not get punished by the regime. Also seeing dozens of your comrades/brothers die to a seeming super soldier can create a morale defeat draining the will to fire seeing as there seems to be no chance of victory.

Captain Albert Jacka. VC. MC and Bar. Described as "Australia's Greatest Frontline Soldier" and his action at Pozieres in 1916 was described as "The most effective and dramatic act of individual audacity in the history of the AIF". Also, he was the first Australian to receive the VC in WW1. There are historians that argue that Jacka deserves potentially 3 VCs and wasn't awarded for his actions at Polygon Wood in September 1917. He not only led his Battalion but he also ran 400 yds through mud, under heavy sniper fire, in order to get SOS flares for an artillery strike as he was the only that knew where the man carrying them had died. Pozieres, 1916: led a group of seven men in an assault and managed to kill and capture as many Germans as "Fats" did. But Jacka was wounded 7 times including bullets through the chest and neck. He was only awarded the MC. It might be because Albert Jacka is family. But it always annoys me that he left out in every mention of Australia's involvement.

ofc russia is a threat look at their expansioistic history its clear they would not stop expanding their territory and killing the throne heir is not an excuse , it's a reason to go to war as an absolute monarchy
@BromellFilmCorp
@BromellFilmCorp 8 жыл бұрын
lXlElevatorlXl It was an excuse, Austria-Hungary even before the assassination was looking for a reason to invade Serbia in order to absorb it into Austria-Hungary. The group that did the assassination was unrelated to the Government, and the demands Austria-Hungary sent to serbia because of it where preposterous, no country with any shred of pride would accept them all, but Serbia was willing to accept all but one. Yet Austria-Hungary still would not accept it and go to war anyway. The Assassination was a convenience for those in Austria-Hungary who where looking for justification for war anyway. And the threat does not necessarily mean that threat will ever act. Yet Germany would anyway for power mongering.
