Logistics are figured out already and occupying already built infrastructure for storing and staging equipment is easier than bringing your own resources and labor to build it that could then be reoccupied by the enemy before you can theoretically use it. The USA is ENORMOUS, so much so that our own military has hard times transporting things at times domestically. Walmart in every town every 25-50 miles from the mission river east is a hell of a way to move through and occupy large territories of land on the side of the country that has the most people.

Fun fact, part of the reason it has taken us so long to go back is because by the mid 80s, we hit a point where we actually couldn't go back. All of the calculations performed for the moon missions were done on paper/in people's heads and large portions of it were lost or destroyed and several people involved were dead.
