ok a few things to clear up. "humid sacks of rice, hogs and bats sniffing each other, massive stereos" is a play on the old ghostbusters line. "human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria" The torpedo drills were not their own idea. All the other ships were told to fire blanks at the Iowa for testing. Roosevelt was a big fan of watching naval combat and drills, and wanted them to show off. You know... without the actual live fire. They did get the signaling wrong and just confused the Iowa even more. The whole crew was not arrested for this action, only the person who fired the live torpedo. But they were reassigned elsewhere right after.
@aarronmorton17314 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think the misunderstanding comes from the fact that the torpedo primers weren't for the torpedo but for the launcher itself to provide the initial launch out of the tube.

When the incorrect Morse code signal came from the William D. Porter, they were trying to judge how close the torpedo was to the Iowa. They misjudged the distance and speed of the torpedo and thought it would hit the Iowa on the front, when in reality it was closer to the rear. Luckily, the Iowa didn't follow through with the signal because if they had, they would have reversed into (or at least came a lot closer to) the torpedo explosion.

The only incidents the ship endured that are absolutely confirmed are the entire torpedo incident involving the Iowa, and the Torpedoman in charge of the live torpedo being let off by the president himself. The depth charge, the firing of the gun into an officer's yard and the tearing a portion out of her sister in dock have no official source and cannot be verified. @10:15 i honestly can't tell if he did it as a joke but the fact that he said they didn't hit because it wasn't American yet the plane he drew for the kamikaze is a silhouette of P-51 (an american fighter) and not an actual Japanese Zero.

I'll be honest with you I'm watching this after having binged all of sam'o'Nellas videos just to get a second kick out of it and watching you pause right before the torpedo punchline is comedy gold
