I drive back and forth between Hellinois and the Olympic Peninsula several times per year, and when there's no snow that stretch between Mitchell, SD and Billings, MT thru the black hills is one of the few places left in this country that looks nearly the same as it did before manifest destiny kicked in. There's an austere beauty to wide open spaces, where there's nothing but open grasslands and the far away rise of mountains in front of you, and seemingly empty of other people. Absolutely nailed it! I've been on a number of these and the rest are on my bucket list. As a fellow train lover, I'd recommend The Canadian from Vancouver to Toronto. 2/3 of the trip is gorgeous mountains, rivers, forests, with about a day or so of flat swamp & prairie farmland. Another spectacular drive (I'm surprised that it got missed) is US 395, from San Bernardino (CA) to Reno (NV). It's 450 miles of spectacular desert and mountains. The highway follows along the abrupt eastern slope of the Sierras. There are plenty of great detours that can be taken along the way---like Mt Whitney Portal, the Bristlecone Pine Forest, Mammoth Lakes, June lake Loop, Yosemite, Mono Lake, and Bode Ghost Town (to name just a few). Though the drive can be done in a single day, it is best to take 2 or 3 days, to get the most of it. On the California Zephyr, the train does not go through the most spectacular part of the Sierras. It crosses at Donner Pass, which is far north of the best that the Sierras have to offer. If, after the Rockies, you are craving more colossal mountain scenery, get off the Zephyr in Reno, rent a car, and drive down US 395. You won't be disappointed!

Great video, your enthusiasm is contagious! Another option for that Alaska cruise is the Alaska ferry. It's slow going and hits all of the small Alaska towns that are normally isolated. Some of the people in the towns come out to meet the ferry because it is their contact to the outside world. Travelers have the option of booking a cabin on the ferry as It's a 5 day trip from Bellingham WA to Juneau. Most travelers pitch a tent on the deck. Folks mingle and chat and enjoy the passage. The greatest advantage of taking the ferry is you can bring your vehicle along to explore Alaska when you arrive.

Chicago is a wet bag of di*ks and it is just easier to go one stop out than contend with Union Station. It was the most breathtaking thing I've ever witnessed. My first trip got delayed by nearly 13 hours because of 1) one car got a flat on its way into Sac on the prior trip so we had to spend a few hours dispersing passengers and removing the car in Elko, 2) had a huge boulder fall onto the tracks (just before the Vail stop) that took another 3-4 hours to remove, 3) we hit a ton of other train traffic through Nebraska and Iowa. Best delay ever. Would love to do again. Great video, BTW. Thank you!

Omgoodness! This was, by far, your best video! Very informative and I will have to view it again, take notes and send it to my husband. How I love to travel. I've taken Amtrak up and down the West Coast and a few trips up and down the East Coast, but most of my travel has been a road trip by car, zig-zagging across the U.S.A.! Thanks Briggs!

Love me some Fancy Gap!! Because of traffic I had to get off the Interstate there once on my way into North Carolina and take 52 down to Mt. Airey. Man, that road ain’t for the faint of heart and all my respect to the locals who have to drive it in the rain or snow. And I’m from Canada so I’ve got snow driving game. Beautiful driving in that part of the country. Just adore the area.

I used to ride Amtrak all the time, that is until they stopped allowing smoking. My kids and I went everywhere on Amtrak, our favorite trip was Virginia Beach VA to Washington DC or NYC. This trip we took a number of times! One of our other favorites was to Kansas City MO! Certain parts of this trip it was hard to pull my children's faces off the windows. I was so thankful for staterooms! I really enjoyed your video!

I love traveling by train also I don’t do any flying unless it’s an emergency and I haven’t had any emergencies lately. Your videos are fantastic- you cover the most important things in every video you upload 😊👍💕

Hey there. I loved this video. My husband and I have been on many of the cruises you mentioned and if we are about the same age, you and I may have been on FT. ORD at the same time. I was with CDEC from early '85 to about 'late '88 then I re-upped and went to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey. I LOVED the area and driving down "1" was the best thing ever.
