It's a strategy. Alan gave Ryan his sombrero after the match, which is a really kind and respectful gesture. Ryan has a lot of mutual respect for Alan, too. We can also see that they have no issues with shaking hands or giving dues in this match.

From 2k subs and podcasts in the garage to the world stage of Armwrestling with John Brzenk in his corner and then proceeding to be a cornerman for Devon Larratt in a career defining match. He's using side pressure. A horrible move for a beginner, an arm break is possible, there's a lot of pressure in the elbow. But, for a pro with enough experience and a strong enough frame it is a viable option, especially when you're stronger than the opponent on the inside. Ryan did a great job of opening his hand.
