Just a stray thought regarding the uber-flashy male festival dress: Could that be an important use for artificial dyes and colours? All their clothing is very naturalistic, made from things they hunt or forage, so lots of browns and other warm colours. Perhaps one way that males stand out is by getting as much clothing as they can in rare (less natural) colours (like blues/purples/bright greens) as one additional way of 'peacocking'. Since the Qyaalyon seem quite isolated, that kind of ornamental cloth wouldn't ever be super common. But you might have enterprising merchants from neighboring societies trekking into the plains with a cart of brightly dyed linen, hoping to charge an exorbitant price in exotic pelts or hunting trophies? Each piece of fabric getting cut up, repurposed and recycled between festivals; the pre-modern dye fadeing away over a year or two. So there's this a ongoing demand for this low supply and perishable luxury. With the most successful hunters (who thus have the most impressive items to trade) wearing large stretches of bright fabric and less successful males only having smaller, faded, second or third hand fabric woven into their leather. So, that 'stray thought' went on for a bit... Great video, keep up the good work!
@mariahpattieworldbuilding40623 жыл бұрын
maybe. I've mostly been focusing on one isolated group, but there are others closer to the borders of other countries with trade ties. Some of them probably wear more fabric. However, since they are pretty minimalist about possessions, I don't think the festival gear would be stored between uses. I think it would be made from things like leather and fur, which could be repurposed later, or things like flowers and bones, which could be thrown out and left to disintegrate.

@@mariahpattieworldbuilding4062 If You plan the mating ceremony to be linked to something like a spring festival, it would make sense to have them store or make their flashy outfits at the winter camps. There could be a great spring festival shortly before the individual groups split, so that the possibility of attracting mates from another flock is higher and if it worked the new found couple could join the same flock for the season. Carrying the outfits with oneself on migration would be highly impractical, but trying to make a new one every time as well because you had to collect and carry at least the materials for it over some time and making an important and extravagant piece of clothing is a lot of work (as You know best), so it would be much better to do it while encamped during winter and not while migrating. The timing of the "end-of-winter mating festivity" would fit ideal in my opinion - if they would store the outfits or make new ones every winter might differ. Maybe there are changing fashion trends and wearing a last years outfit would make you look like a fool. Richer and more successful men could get new outfits every year, while others have to recycle their old ones for the new season and change them according to the new fashion trend more or less successfully.

2 things about their clothes. 1 - If you are a member of a flying race, you'd never want something that moves in the wind on you, the less material is "doing the sail" on you, the better. 2 - it rains on the plains, and you have NOWHERE to escape it. Don't know if you'll see this, but I absolutely love the amount of effort you put into making your avian race! It might even help me with making my own avian race, though I imagine mine would be quite different compared to yours. I haven't worked on it much yet, but here's what I got so far. As a race, the Avis have a relationship with werewolves. This was inspired by the relationship between ravens and wolves so this might inspire some interesting social dynamics between the two species, especially since they were originally humans that were changed by the Norse gods, specifically Fenrir and Freya's feathered cloak. Additionally, the Avis would be more bird-like than your avians, such as full body plumage and avian legs. So yeah, nothing too detailed right now. Just wanted to say that I enjoyed this video and your worldbuilding and felt like sharing a bit of my own world.

Yay, finally the avians! Very interesting! and I don't have any bones to pick with it, though then again you've not really gone into the biology/social part of it, and you've established we're getting by the genetics and flight with some handwavium, which is absolutely fair, (it's not like anyone sits there to calculate eye and hair color probabilities in human characters, you just give the protagonist and his mom the special green or silver eyes and you're set).

I mean...I actually do try to take color probabilities and recessiveness into account with character design choices, but I'm also a weirdo who really likes genetics - especially polygentic traits. Probably not, but it bothered me until I sat down and charted it out.

Are you deadass? This is biological nonsense, they have posterior wings that creates a need for multiple flaps for takeoff, aerial imbalance, and extreme altitude limitations since their wing positioning doesn't facilitate maximum lift at thinner atmosphere levels. If they jump from a height too high, they could fall to a violent fucking death as they can't produce enough upward force in time.

The biology is a work in progress. Check the updated videos before insulting people.
@Amy_the_Lizard3 жыл бұрын
@@gregthegraduate3206 Anything will meet a violent death if it's unlucky enough and falls, so I fail to see how that's a survival handicap. I mean, bats are fine, and the only bat that's capable of taking off without falling from an appropriate height is the vampire bat. Other bats will absolutely fall to the ground if there's not enough time for them to generate enough force to take off. (Though to be fair, bats can take a fall pretty well. I saw one little guy accidently fly headfirst into a wall then fall three-four feet to the ground, and he was fine. A little dazed, but he got back up, hurled himself off a set of stairs, and got back in the air and continued on his way like nothing happened.) If bats can handle knowing what they can and can't safely hurl themselves from, I think something with the intelligence of a person should be able to handle it just fine. Secondly, "posterior" means "behind" or "to the rear," when describing wings, it usually refers to the set of wings closer to the rear of a four winged insect. Currently the avians only have one set of wings, so there's really no point to calling them posterior, as there aren't any other wings they need to be distinguished from. You're just making the terminology confusing, as your phrasing implies multiple sets of wings. As for altitude limitations, I fail to see an issue there either as long as they aren't trying to fly over a tall mountain, I don't see how that's a problem. You don't have to be optimal to be functional. Just look at bumble bees, they're sub-optimal in terms of flight, but their flight ability gets the job done well enough for them to function. Besides, if they were going to be flying high enough for air thinness to sabotage their flying, they'd already be facing the much more serious problem of needing specfic lung adaptions to breath properly on such thin oxygen. High altitude birds can function at those heights because of special adaptations they have boosting their oxygen efficiency even higher than that of a regular bird (again, bear in mind that birds - and these avians - need more oxygen than mammals in the first place.) Personally, I'd reccomened doing some research on ballooning to get an idea of how much of a sudden altitude increase a fantasy species that flies should be able to handle, and what kind of turbulance you'd expect to encounter at different heights.

Some people have been talking about how they would need tails in order to fly, but I'm not sure they actually would - not unless you drastically rebuilt their legs from human to bird. Human legs can't really tuck up under the body very well in a sustained flight, and would just cause more drag if they tried; however, if they held their legs straight back behind them in flight their legs could be the rudders. You touched very briefly on "human vs. birdlike features," but what I personally would love is if _all_ the bird people were slightly beaky around the nose and mouth (it wouldn't have to be the whole mouth; an owl's mouth is a lot larger than just its beak, after all, and I think most birds have that to some degree). Not all beaked animals are birds, but all birds have beaks, and those beaks are almost as varied as the birds that have them; it would be another way to make them all unique from each other, and really drive home that the different species can't really breed with each other.

I think it's worth noting that for the silver coloration, they're likely to have trouble flying toward the end of the season. White bird feathers degrade faster than pigmented ones, because melanin and other pigments often reinforce the structure of keratin-based things like feathers and hair. There's actually a bird that shows this off super well by having white in its plumage at the beginning of the season right after its molt, and then gradually losing it as time passes and the white feathers wear away, leaving the whole bird black.

I really love this channel for all the ideas and details you present in your created races, lifestyles and cultures. And it's again a really great, inspiring video. However, I got one or two things, I would recommend or maybe just ask about. First thing is about your updated "center backpanel" in the clothing part. You described it to be excangable for various different uses like hunting or backpacking. But especially when you showed is as a quiver I wasn't so sure if this would really work. Let's say your an flying creature that is going to hunt with a bow and arrow midst flight (I assume this is the way to hunt if you got wings ^^): Wouldn't it be incredibly difficult to grab an arrow from your quiver on your back if you had huge moving wings between your shoulders and your back? It may be possible, but difficult. Also if you fly horizontally or approach a target on ground, having an open stash on the back isn't maybe that useful. Also it could be difficult (maybe not for trained hunters) to pull a knife or a sword (as you showed in one of your drawings) from your back without cutting through your big wings and destroying or hurting them. Maybe you got good awnsers for my considers tho, I'm just thinking loud about this by myself ^^ Another thing I thought of was the "Show-Off", the typical male bird-behaviour you mixed into your male Qyaalyon behaviour. Maybe it's a no-go for these winged humanoids to do that, but after you talked so much about their feathers and their colour and pattern variations, why don't they brag and spice their style up by adding different, colourful or maybe the rarest feathers to their own, maybe integrating those into their wings to show off, to identify different clans/flocks, as a festive act or in (typical bird-style) mating ceremonies. At least you hinted (or not excluded) this thought in your video (at about 17:10), but I thought of this a little bit different. Think of the "importance" of typical native american headdresses (as a mark of leadership and else, I'm unfortunately not really educated about the american history). From my perspective, if normal humans used feathers meaningfully and with importance like native americans (and probably many other cultures, even nowadays), what importance could feathers have for Avians? But as I said, maybe that's a big no-go for them. As much as I love your videos and I like to think about all the details and ideas you described, I don't want to influence on your vision and to "improve" your creation, so feel free to ignore my thoughts. Anyways, have a great day and hopefully many, many more ideas to put on this channel.
@mariahpattieworldbuilding40623 жыл бұрын
I don't think it would be that difficult to grab the arrows. It would take skill, but I think an arrow could be grabbed on the downstroke of the wings. The first bone in the wings angles down, so there would be space I think. Arrows could also be shot while the hunter has their wings locked into a gliding position. They would need to shorten the length of their arrows, but I think short bows would be more maneuverable anyways.

While an angel-like fantasy race design can be intriguing, if you're going for something that seems more realistic, I would think that they would need feathers all over their body, instead of just on their wings, to help with insulation, especially while in the air, and it might also impact their aerodynamics. Additionally, they would definitely need a tail of some sort for turning and stabilizing themselves while flying. Personally, I would find it more interesting if they weren't just humans with wings. I do love how in-depth you go with their culture and clothing and whatnot, though. Interesting. One thing worth noting if that wings generate lift at the quarter chord. At least with zero camber they do. Extremely high camber slow flight can generate it closer to the midchord. Either way, unless the wings are heavily swept backwards in flight or they have a horizontal stabilizer on their feet, they will be wildly unstable with their center of lift near their upper chest and their center of mass somewhere between their hips and waist. The simplest way to alleviate this with the same basic bodyplan is to fly with wings heavily swept backwards. If you want to change their anatomy, the better option would probably be to have a horizontal stabilizer, or the wierder option would be wings growing out of the lower back or pelvic region.

So I was doing some world building of my own and came across the uses of chicken feathers in replacing wood pulp in things like diapers (that was really interesting) and then I found this video -- I don't know if the link will stay so the title of the video is "Mary Weahkee makes a turkey feather blanket" and I just find it really interesting form of weaving / turkey facts.

Very cool. I like the thought you've put into their clothing especially. Have you ever heard of plains-wanderers? They're a quail-like bird from Australia, in that they are small, ground-dwelling and brown, but the females are bigger and more elaborately coloured, while the males are smaller and incubate the eggs. I think they would make an interesting base for an ethnic group, though I also look forward to seeing what you do with other birds.

Thank you for giving me things to think about. My only humanoid species are birds. They are each based off different birds in our world and while some will be mixed together, the families such as corvids will be the same. What I’m saying is the relation between species is the same. I am planning on using their characteristics for their builds and for their characteristics. I have a lot of world building to go and I had never even thought of needing names for them. But , I will definitely need to consider those things. Thank you!

I love these videos, so interesting! I'm wondering, since a 3 way colour split is so rare, would the people with those pattern be treated differently? Better, worse? Would it influence their job in their society? Or would it just be cool to others with no more reaction?

13:34 chickens (that weren't bred to have lots of meat and fat) can actually fly. Only short distances, but it's better than nothing. (And btw: how about giving them bird tails, for steering in the air?)

This is so interesting! Would they dye their feathers or wings if they feel they dont fit into a colony(?), or to appear more attractive?

You do know since they live on a prairie, they could have a grass that could make a natural fiber fabric like flax.
@mariahpattieworldbuilding40623 жыл бұрын
they could, but I doubt they would. Leather is much stronger and more durable than fabric, and the flying and wind would quickly fray any woven fiber.

If Nautikans and the Qyaa join in the same world, I wonder what kind of cool romance story would come from that. Would it be forbidden and taboo or would it be freeing and adventurously accepted. Would Qyaa be more freed to do whatever while the Nautikans think it's taboo to romance outside their species? Sorry but I keep thinking about the Tzari and what would she do if she met a Qyaaman. Or perhaps an epic where the humans that took over is about to see a reckoning. A rebel human, Tzari, and a Qyaaman or perhaps a 4 person group but no idea what species the fourth person would be but they go on a mission to recruit people to rage war for a better world thing. The funny part is they are all rogues with four good and yet strange personalities. The best part is learning each other along the way and growing or changing from each other. I can just image Tzari is brushing water on herself to keep her clean and as she is talking to a Qyaaman she just met his head turns awkwardly to look at her. Her eyes are like really big and she just says, "That's... Nope." And just walks off. 😂

For winged humanoids, what I often do is handwave an unexpectedly low weight using a heavily pneumatized torso and skeleton. This isn't even unrealistic. Look at ducks and geese, fairly heavy birds, floating on water? They're several times less dense than a mammal. With displacements in water maybe a third or even a quarter of what a similarly sized mammal would have. Flighted birds have A LOT of air sacs.
@ThatOneLadyOverHere3 жыл бұрын
Having them shorter makes sense if only because they are using their muscles a lot which does keep bones from growing. That's why people that have been in certain sports from a young age tend to be short, like gymnists.

if they were to be imprisioned, what if as a precaution their flight feathers were clipped?

yes but only for long-term prisoners. some sort of binding contraption might be used in the short-term.

For herd-living creatures, there is normally only one sex that goes away and looks for / forms a new herd, while the other sex remains in the birth herd. This also applied to people in the past. But ceased later, perhaps because the population groups became so large that it was possible to find non-relatives close by.

Which skin pigmentations to avians have? I know that the feathers all have different patterns and such, but do their skin colours vary just as much, or less?
@mariahpattieworldbuilding40623 жыл бұрын
Qyaalyon are sort of a medium brown. They don't vary much, but other types of aavyans will be different depending on where they live/originated.

I have a bird race in my world building, the Falkyre. Appearance is mostly human with wings resembling birds of prey and retractable talons, colors range from greens and reds to blacks and white, they are one of 5 primary clans sharing similarities to different animals and are consider middle class, there culture resembles a mixture of Russian French and Nordic, with a very honor and craftsmanship favoring society. Their environment is very mountainous and cold, and they often trade with other clans and rely on other clans through mercenaries and alliance for protection.

Is it possible to do an alpine based species/subspecies, based off of the Kea from new zealand, they are the world's only alpine parrots and they are really cool.
@alethearia3 жыл бұрын
So, while bust size increases when you have a child, childbearing doesn't really effect overall bust proportion. But also! Look into hunter gatherer women specifically. They don't care so much about letting their breasts hang. It's just a part of the body, why feel ashamed in it? Most clothing is practicle not based on some established modesty standard. Humans in hunter-gatherer societies tend to see themselves as part of the animal community, so you may see less clothes in general, as well as more animism in their religion. Unrelated note: I suddenly had this amazing idea for Avian art, specifically quilting. Where when your fledgling leaves home you make them something quilted that is representative of their home. And the quilt? A map of their homeland as seen from above arranged in a spiral pattern. As if seen by circling. I'm going to have to draw it now.

Do you think maybe if a younger male is doing the test for earrings perhaps someone is supervising? Like potential mates in a way? Maybe that could explain a female having like 1 earring the male she was watching died so she finished the animal and wore only one earring and he was buried with the other, or maybe something else to that extent?
@mariahpattieworldbuilding40623 жыл бұрын
It's not typically supposed to be supervised, but I have a story where one Qyaalyon went on the hunt. Another character (they were sort of frenemies) followed him to spy and basically watch him F up. When the hunter got in over his head the frenemy jumped out and they ended killing the lion together, so they each took one fang.
