After 10 years and a fully functioning galaxy, return to the book. I, for one, made the world first, still working on it, and a few years ago, i started a book on the side.
@IskandrArchiveАй бұрын
This is the way, i started my worldbuilding by writing about 12 short stories that I decided at 15 years old were all in the same universe, but they didn't really make a lot of sense as existing in the same universe, so I spent the last 10 years worldbuilding to a point where I had to start writing again to make any sense of it, but I've laid the framework and I'm excited to see where the ivy grows.

The fun part about writing is that it's not an all-or-nothing game. You can do as much or as little as you like, and it will end up being progress at the end of the day. You can always reuse things that get scrapped. I got started simply by writing short stories about characters and their problems. One page or fifty pages, didn't matter-- just writing.
@AlienrunАй бұрын
I was in your exact same position about a year and a half ago. Then one day I started getting this habit of writing via ChatGPT and had this eureka moment of "I can finally write the stories I've always wanted to but never had the courage/discipline to see it through!" From there I wrote several bad fanfics till I then focused on original stuff...I joined an online choose your own adventure group and the rest was history! Well not really...it only ended up helping a little bit...as I have this nagging problem of constantly making my story too big to finish. But gosh darn if I didn't start to really like my own ideas! Most importantly though...I managed to write over 200K words of this epic story which I'm not sure if I'll ever finish, as the more I write it the more flawed I notice it is, and that same doubt about being able to fix any of it looms stronger, making me wonder if I should write something else entirely! Anyways I tell you all that because I can detail more what I learned so you avoid some story writing pitfalls I inevitably fell into (mainly stuff with idea generation, the actual writing process and how to edit parts of your story afterwards). Also I'd be able to give advice on how exactly you create a consistent habit of writing in the first place...cause oh boy is that a hurdle to overcome! And even then its easy to slip up and just...stop writing for a while for whatever reason! Which can sometimes make it hard to go back to where you were before. Its like when you stop playing a video game for a while and don't have the muscle memory down when you come back to it but far worse...as at least a video game will give you an objective save point. Whereas writing a story you just have words...words that maybe can inspire you but don't exactly communicate directly how you should continue the story...in other words...your story fundamentally exists in your imagination even after you finish writing it...meaning you have to keep using that part of your mind to consistently write something that you can consider good one day! Anyways that's enough rambling from me! Feel free to ask me to add you somewhere in the future, as I'd love to hear about your story idea if your willing to share it! :D
@atlasbarrettАй бұрын
i think my favorite example of writing where the worldbuilding was kind of an afterthought is gravity falls. listening to Alex Hirsch’s DVD commentary is so interesting because a lot of the time, his fans actually knew things about his own universe before he did. he would often create things with a vague idea that it would lead to something and organically through the power of the fandom latching onto those things, he would have to give them a place in the lore of gravity falls and figure out a way to incorporate it which makes the mystery element so much more natural because even the WRITERS didn’t really know where a lot of it was going. that had a vague blueprint of how it would start and end but a lot of the lore thrown in between that was not carefully sat down and thought through with solid intention of it being a big twist or lore or anything

I would like to point out some things about harry potter's world 1. Students are going to the school to learn things like teleporting, they can't innately cast teleportation spells from birth, and what about those born without magic? We can't expect everyone to be skilled enough, or lucky enough, or smart enough to cast teleportation spells. This is why magical transportation exists, for those who don't have those liberties. 2. The cost to teleportation is being educated enough to cast the spell 3. I don't think Hogwarts is going to delete a house because some of the students are evil. They're only kids plus it wouldn't be fair to the other Slytherin students to just be kicked out because of the wrongdoings of a few bad apples. Also, I'd imagine Hogwarts cares about tradition given how it's run by this wise wrinkly dude. He doesn't seem like the guy to do something so rash 4. We see bankers, animal tamers, shopkeepers, and conductors within the series, and it can be assumed that not everyone in the world specializes in magic. For most it's likely a tool to help them accomplish their work. Like there might be a baker who can spells that knead dough without supervision or an accountant who can pull up records on a whim. It would be quite unrealistic for everyone to want to focus on magic, and magic alone. Also, I realize I may of come off as angry in my comment, and I do just want to let you know that I think your video was well orchestrated. I just wanted to bring up why some things were written the way they were.
@gabrielamaral978Ай бұрын
You can worldbuild just for the love of it (and f*k what Scrit thinks about it, sometimes he sounds like a m* like that)-forget about scripts! Worldbuilding can be its own reward, even without having a specific lore or story attached. Most of us aren’t out here trying to publish novels. We’re professors, content creators, streamers, engineers, IT bros, and so on. Not everyone wants to be a writer for living. Sometimes, the joy of crafting worlds is enough in itself. That said, it's perfectly okay to worldbuild for the sake of worldbuilding. But if your goal is to tell a story, getting lost in endless worldbuilding can become a problem.
@bigbossvi429Ай бұрын
If your goal isn’t reader engagement, yea pure world building, pure anything is fine if it’s giving you what you want. But if your goal is reader engagement good characters and story will always take the forefront over world building. Interesting characters in an empty room will always be more engaging than boring characters in an interesting world. Your characters are governed by the story which in turn are the lenses of your world.
@gabrielamaral978Ай бұрын

My favorite way of worldbuilding is by happenstance and questions. Take my current project: I was reading an Undertale Yellow fanfic when my brain randomly asked, “Hey, what WERE the humans doing all this time?” And after mulling it over, I opened Word and started writing. What do the humans think of monsters? They think the Great War, monsters, and magic are myths. Why are humans anywhere near Mt. Ebott? Because the land is lush and fertile. How? A consequence of all the magic used in the war. And how do people outside of this little settlement react to this amazing land? They try to take it for themselves. How do people react to these myths? Like in real life, myths of monsters are remixed into new forms. What about the missing kids? They’re status is known and remixed alongside the rest of the mythos, and to combat this the people of Ebott give them titles (ex: the dancer, the cowboy) to protect their memory from eager writers who will sully it. Speaking of those kids, what about families? They have those two, some handling the loss better than others Etc. Etc. Before I knew it I had some characters, a religion, and a way of life too for the people of Ebott Territory, who I dubbed the Ebottese.
@baddragoniteАй бұрын
I think the Harry Potter teleportation thing is kinda moot honestly From my understanding there is a chance you can just lose an arm when doing it or whatever and it existing while flying cars and brooms exist doesn't really contradict anything to me, kinda similar thing with owls, we have separate technologies in our real world for the same tasks so it's not /that/ crazy. Like it's more efficient to take a plane across the country but some people take a bus, or a train, or they drive, or hell a few people take a horse and buggy, and we still send physical letters even though email, texting, instant messengers, and phone calls exist so those things being there for a bit of whimsy or whatever really doesn't break anything to me necessarily

I know it may seem rough at time, but listening to critics and their critiques can be helpful. Not every critic out there is trying to say that you suck at writing just because or are blindly praising your writing without a good reason. A second opinion is very useful. If you write something on your own and you don't have anyone giving you ideas about what to add or take away, get someone that you can trust that's also knowledgeable in the world of writing. Sometimes, you're your own worst enemy because you can either be too critical towards yourself which leads to too many roadblocks, or too lax and praiseworthy towards yourself which leads to too many ideas not being proofread and sounding like word garbage.

A lot of Harry Potter's magical quirks make more sense when you realize that the progression of magic can be compared to the progression of technology. Why do they use owls to deliver mail? Same reason one would use a physical letter when you can send an email. There's old technology and new technology, so it stands to reason a magical setting would have old and new magic, and people would use both interchangeably.

Do you have any advice for making fictional animals and creatures? idk i keep avoiding making them because I feel like I need to deeply understand how they biologically work, as well as behavior 😭

Doing research is one of the most neglected parts when it comes to writing, and I think that’s a shame. Why do you want to write about a topic (or in this case create a creature) when you have no interest in learning more about it? As a beta reader I’ve read many beginner’s stories who obviously didn’t do any research whatsoever and it always shows a lack of care and quality. No one says you have to know everything-that’s impossible-but as a reader I at least expect you to know what you’re talking about. If your magical creature is a unicorn I expect you to know a thing or two about horses. Or you take the easy way and just make up a new species. No extra work needed. I’ve made research part of my writing process. It helps me understand the topic more and from this understanding and knowledge arise new ideas and world building aspects, and it allows me to share something with my readers they didn’t know before. I’d say doing the extra work always pays off in one way or another

Something I like to do is look at animals I like and/or their niches (basically their role in the ecosystem). For example, say I want something similar to an owl. An owl’s niche (very roughly) is a nocturnal bird of prey that eats small mammals. So why not make a nocturnal bird-like animal, and have its prey be whatever rodent-adjacent animal I make? And give it some sort of silencing mechanism to give it that part of an owls biology. Voila, I now have a new creature! all that’s really necessary is a somewhat deeper understanding of ecosystems than the standard person, and even then you can kind of get away with anything if you think about it

the clickbait really isnt necessary tbh

I've never understand why people like HP so much. I hated its magic, world and the characters even before I began to hate the plot, and years before I began to despiss the author. I liked the movies, though, maybe because they give me less time to wander into all the continuous flow of stupid stuff.

You talk like worldbuilding for the sake of worldbuilding is a coping mecanism to someone who cannot make a story. That's the biggest failure in this video imo. But it's quite good video otherwise, i guess.

You're good at talking about things when you're not obsessing in anime, derailing things to discuss your own stuff, and using clickbait thumbnails. I'm getting sick of clicking on your videos and not seeing you discuss what you're showing in the thumbnail.
