Call me an idiot, but if you do this to Judge Holden, 21:10 (do it with anything, not just Dragon Ball), he wouldn't be as deep or interesting as he is in Blood Meridian and would be considered an edgy character, but even then, the Judge is kinda edgy. (Please, tell me I'm not alone when I say that?)

Edgy always struck me as performative and coming from a mind that doesn't understand darkness but is intrigued by it. It's someone tryin to be dark but they end up bein all extra about it. Or a mind too caught up in normal people's reactions to the grotesque so they feel the need to engage heavily in shock value as though violence itself isn't shocking enough, which denotes a person that never really engaged with actual violence. "Is violence purely spectacle to you?"

Edgy: trying to be dark and failing. Dark: fucked up shit happening and it doesn't make you laugh or gives you second hand embarrassment. This is what i thought it was...and i think im going to continue being wrong.

What comes from specialist is just a specialist. Useful worker. But from a powerful generalist emerges a director.

The interesting thing about The Boys being edgy and Invincible being dark, is that, at their story’s core, Invincible is actually the edgy story and The Boys is dark. At it’s core, Invincible is “What if Superman’s dad was General Zod” and The Boys is “What if mega-corporations colluded with the government to put their celebrities into positions where they can manipulate their viewers and use their influence to harm and abuse people with less power than them?” Invincible is a story about superheroes, and The Boys is a story about consumerism and the elite.
@CockAndBallTorture.
@CockAndBallTorture. 13 сағат бұрын
Basically. Invincible is clearly fictional and does not represent our real world in any way. But The Boys does that exactly. Invincible is genuinely Superman but bad. The Boys has more to say, you just have to look at more than just Homelander.

I would say edgy is intended to excite the audience -- to "put them on edge" as it were. Through things like the spontaneous potential for violence, willingness to break social norms, and/or a sharply challenging attitude to the other characters and/or the audience's expectations. Hamlet is edgy, for instance, built as he is on a murderous revenge plot that will tear everything down the play is built on consideration and anticipation of his anti-social actions. While dark is just the general tonal hue of a character, usually associated with a tragic character arc and heavier themes. Naturally this overlaps with edginess somewhat but is far more broadly applicable. King Lear is a dark character. We spend the majority of the play seeing his decline into depressed madness, most of what we experience with him is bitter regret as he recognizes his folly - to put his kingdom into the hands of the undeserved who stroked his ego - while he''s far too powerless at this point to do anything but wither and die.

"Edgy" as a word has been divorced from its original meaning. It basically just meant what was cool and against the norm of the time. Sonic the hedgehog was edgy, unlike that good boy Mario. But then Shadow was the new cool. That phase of what was "edgy" at the time, the dark, grim, gritty, reality tackling (or sometimes mindlessly devoid of logic) phase of everything was rightfully called so at the time, because it was the new fashion, rebelling against the norms of previous styles of media. But because of that descriptor working so well, it became associated with _only_ that period forever after.

a generalist might be good for more run of the mill situations but you WILL eventually need someone that specializes in a subject or you should specialize in SOMETHING but then train yourself in other areas.. should you only leave your self one option? hell no.. but you are also easily replaceable as a jack-of-all trades since just about any other mother f****** and their dog could do the same thing if as you if none of your abilities stand out above anybody else.. people should have 1 or 2 specializations where you are really well versed in, but don't leave yourself without options. I don't want some "jack-of-all-trades" doctor... where i'm from thats called a quack, they just run you in circles while never actually solving the problem.... There would have never been a space program without specialists, there wouldn't be modern medicine without specialists. Maybe we should just stop calling it "specialist".... have 1 or 2 specializations that you excel in.. but also have a larger roster of skills to draw on.. because the reality now is that you likely aren't ALWAYS going to have access to the same job... given lay-offs and a constantly fluctuating economy, a lot of jobs come and go now. So being able to adapt and do something that isn't your specialization but is a step towards keep yourself afloat and a roof over your head. Think of specialization as your primary passions... most people would love to make a living via their passion. We cant all do that though, and sometimes plain and simply just need to get by. But should you get the opportunity to make a living by doing your passion take it. Don't get me wrong, i do largely agree with the subject. But at the same time with the way these videos are executed it feels like people are being told to be un-skilled plebes? Maybe i'm a tad cynical for that thought, but thats part of what i get from these types vids. and to the Thor comments, I agree the dude is awesome... but you know why he can condense those more complicated subjects into short, easily digested content? Because those fields are his specialization. I don't think your wrong either. I just feel that the way the information that was being presented didn't properly convey the message you were going for... or had to many mixed messages in between.

I think the key difference between edge and darkness is whether the author thinks that dark, violent, or disturbing things are _cool._ Edgelords never indulge in their edginess because they want to say something, anything, they do it because they think it makes them look awesome and mature. Same with edgy works of fiction.

Edgy stories tend to subvert, deconstruct, apply cynicism, rebel against, or flanderize tropes, expectations, themes, or itself, with the goal of shock value and the sheer sake of being edgy. Dark tends to focus more on telling a sincere story grounded in it's setting and suspension disbelief, with the goal of evoking some sort of deeper emotion or thought on the story, theme, or message being shown without meta knowledge of other similar stories to contrast it Bad writing aside, if you were to take a bad edgy story vs a bad dark story, the edgey story is likely bad because everything is superficial and can't be taken seriously, while the dark story likely doesn't communicate it's theme/message well.

I think a Dark story is one where "Goodness" is possible but very hard to obtain. Where as Edgy is just doing something hanious because you can. Llamas with hats is a good example. Sure its funny to see the horrifying things the llama does but after a while it doesnt even phase us any more. But a Dark story sticks with you because you know Goodness is possible and just keep hoping agaist hope the MC will find it.

Hi there, I'm a relatively new subscriber to your channel. I was disappointed that you didn't bring up the Rule of Cool trope in this video, and it's connection with edgy fiction. Maybe I've just always had an incorrect understanding of edgy, but I've always associated it with Dante from DMC, Yuuske from YuYu Hakusho, Stone Cold Steve Austin circa 1997, The Rock circa 1998, Cloud from Final Fantasy 7, Squall Leonhart from Final Fantasy 8, and maybe even Clint Eastwood's character(s) in the Sergio Leone trilogy. Also, too many early nineties comic book characters to list here. In other words, I'm under the impression that edgy characters, especially main characters, are supposed to be impossibly cool, stylish, angsty, and at the end if the day the audience is meant to find them awesome. The channel Life of Slice has done a series on how entertainment has portrayed coolness in the eighties, nineties and 2000s. Those resonated with me, especially because so much of the "cool" characters from those decades are edgy characters, and I grew up in the eighties and nineties watching the characters in those videos. And I was kind of surprised to watch this video, and not hear anything about coolness. Anyway, as I previously stated, I'm a newcomer to your channel, and I haven't watched many of your videos. Have you ever done a video on "cool" characters (or entertainment which tries to convey an atmosphere of "coolness"), and if not, then would you ever see yourself making such a video? If you've read this far, then thank you. I'm going to go watch a bunch of your videos now.

i'll be honest, putting guts in the green section in the thumbnail is still a bit controversial. great character, but it's hard not to feel like he's not just smoking the "indomitable human spirit" pack over and over until the pack's power plants dont hit him anymore.
