Coach Tom Yankello has paid close attention to fine details over the years and that is part of the reason he has been successful coaching and training both competitive fighters and athletes from the higher levels of sport. In this video he explains, through research and video evidence exactly how and why elite boxers and athletes in most swing and throwing sports place the rear foot at a 90 degree position. Many coaches and fighters will still teach to place the rear foot near a 45 degree position when even they themselves, without realization and effort place their own feet in the most advantageous and stable "punching stance", which is 90 degrees! #dingding

Hey coach, first of all thank you very much, this and all the videos i'm continiously studing are unvaluable. Still I have a crucial question that I hope you can solve in this matter. Does this 90 degree rear foot angle applies for MMA? I know this isn't your art but if you have something to add for this it would be awesome. (I've seen lots of mma videos but nobody gives this kind of detailed profound explanations as you give for boxing). Hope you can help me, if not it's ok too, i'll still think you're the man. Cheers from Argentina!!

Watching this video helped me in the finals of the New Jersey Golden Gloves against the favorite. He was cutting 10lbs more than me yet I was pushing him around. I was stronger than he was because of my stance and balance! Thanks! Your instructional videos helped improve my boxing 🥊!!!

Also, when you have the back foot at 90 degrees and the front foot pointed at the target which should be 90 degrees as well, you can shift in and out of south paw with the same exact foot position at all times, just a different shoulder pointed towards the opponent. The back foot at 90 degrees feels so stable because you can use the heels without becoming flat footed or losing mobility, speed, balance, or power.

Much love and respect from Argentina Coach Tom. My teacher was Monzon's sparring partner and he taught me the Philly Shell and an almost lazy looking stylecentered counterpunching and heavy jabbing, going backwards many times. Now i have friends who want to learn this and it's not so easy to teach it...Personally i always had a problem with bouncy pressure fighters and sometimes 90 rear foot made me feel like i was way too far to clip them, that would force one to go a bit out of the Shell. Do you have any tip against de jab jab cross as someone is pulling you back? I'd always smother with the shoulder. Big hugs and a loooot of thank yous for your content! Viva el Boxeo

Love your videos Tom. I agree but I think it's just a little less then 90 like 75 degrees but everything your saying is right for leverage power stability it's gotta be planted and stabilizing you. I love your videos your the boxing guru my trainer getting mad at me for having it at about 90 and saying use 45 and in my head I'm just thinking about what you said. But my trainer uses that Tyson Armstrong Frazier pressure fighter so it's not really wrong just different but most times I agree it's gotta be at a 90 or close to it.

OSG BSG Absolutely it’s the most important punch in boxing hands down! You can use it as a offensive tool in many different ways and also can be used as a defensive tool. Along with a great solid stance it’s the foundation of boxing!

Coach Joe D. I’ve had 3 fights 3KOs, im 64KG I’m 17 years old, thing is coach everyone already knows I got a good jab so they come at me aggressive and try to close the distance as quick as possible it can frustrate me when my coach puts me with a higher level opponent, I’ve only been boxing for a year and a half😄
@WorldClassBoxingChannel
@WorldClassBoxingChannel 5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you are having success. Good for you. Remember a double jab and triple jabs are great weapons too. Use them to keep them off of you. You must learn to fight with angles if you have a real aggressive fighter. Amateur fighters are typically more aggressive, partly because the fights are so short and you need to accumulate points quickly and young fighters are also nervous and not under control! if a fighter is real aggressive, then spin away from him and set up your counter attack. Pivots work well. Also, use your straight right hand to follow that jab. Fire it quick and that will give your opponent something other than just the jab to deal with! Let me know how you progress! Good luck! #dingding

Hey, great video! I have a question. My coach, who was a southpaw featherweight world champ in 2000, Derrick Gainer, tells me to keep my back foot's toes pointing less than 45 degrees, almost forward. He tells me to tap (its extremely subtle) my feet when i punch (left foot left hand, right foot right hand). He says that this gives you more speed and maneuverability. I believe him, and I have been doing it, and it seems effective. I have no idea how to compare these foot positions, can you maybe contrast this foot position with the one you've outlined? Have you ever seen that before? Thank you so much, these videos are really great.
@username-ru6ul
@username-ru6ul 5 жыл бұрын
Also, the tapping of the feet combined with the faster hands is supposed to make up for the lost power due to less rotation. Does this make sense to you? It does makes sense to me a little bit, because after reading Dempsey's book it seems like the tapping helps put your body weight into the punch. Sorry for so many questions.
@WorldClassBoxingChannel
@WorldClassBoxingChannel 5 жыл бұрын
Great question. The tapping is a good technique and habit to form. I often reinforce that with punches. Especially as a coordination of foot and hands when punching for balance also. The foot turned almost straight ahead can leave you often times leaning to the front, which is never good. Loss of power yes! Loss of stability and defensive position most of the time yes. You cannot maximize hip rotation. Just not possible. Are you closer to your target with feet turned? Absolutely. Felix Trinidad was often caught with unnecessary punches because of this weight transfer and foot position. Derrick Gainer got away with it because of his toughness and his other skills sets, but I would never teach any average fighter to use that set up! You have to weigh your strengths and weaknesses with any style you choose! Hope this helps and thanks again!

Question: My boxing stance is sideways like u r showing in the video.. but I try to change that because I feel like my right hand has to travel too far to hit the target.. But when I don't stand sideways I feel like my defense is much weaker.. I'm not as agile.. Is this an inevitable exchange or am I doing something wrong..? Excuse my bad English I'm from Germany.. thx for the vids great work
@WorldClassBoxingChannel

du sprichst sehr gut Englisch! Question: Where do you place your right hand in your boxing stance. On the side of your face, or very high on the side of your head, or slightly in front of your cheek? Also, how do your feet line up? Maybe your rear and front foot alignment is not separated enough.

I was just watching Pirog, De La Hoya, Robinson, GGG who all have a strong arch in their upper backs when fighting but found just a few like Ryan Garcia are much more straight in the upper back. Is it just something we are born with or should a boxer train to have a strong curve in their upper back? One problem seems that it leads to back problems after boxing though. .....and Thanks for all you great videos
@iAmDe123

It's generally a bad idea to stand up straight because it makes a bigger target and it forces your chin up
@Bb-pw1zi
@Bb-pw1zi 3 жыл бұрын
@@iAmDe123 I think it really depends on the body type and fighting style. Bernard Hopkins back when looking side on is very straight with a nicely tucked chin. Klitschko and Mayweather's were quite straight which helped them lean back for defense like BHop. Some have a naturally curved back and some straight and each has its pros and cons.
@iAmDe123
@iAmDe123 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bb-pw1zi yeah I'd say it only works with taller fighters With hearns and Hopkins being really tall for their weight class or fighters using the posture as a trap of sorts like mayweather.

Hy coaches, I'm trying different foot positions and I found that I'm much quicker and more balanced when my rear heel is elevated, also Pacman and other "fast" boxers have their heel lifted and basketball players are on the front foeet when in "guard" what's your opinion? so planted is for combos and power, frot feet is for moving?
@WorldClassBoxingChannel
@WorldClassBoxingChannel 5 жыл бұрын
Watch the entire video. We specifically touch on Pac man and how his foot is planted! Mayweather planted! Ali planted! NOT on the ball of foot with heel elevated like you think! When you move you sometimes lift to adjust and when you throw the punch you many times lift and pivot, then it's back to the floor again for stability and leverage. Basketball is not boxing, nor is it a "swing" "throw" sport and the defensive stance/position is different for basketball than boxing. Your usually not getting punched in basketball, nor are you throwing a punch.
@MD-tx8se
@MD-tx8se 5 жыл бұрын
Coach Joe D. I see and understand! I didn't watch both videos. Do you have to be just aware of this - planting or do you train this footwork with specific drills?
@WorldClassBoxingChannel
@WorldClassBoxingChannel 5 жыл бұрын
A little of both. Believe it, or not many fighters just do it naturally even though we are coached NOT to do this, it is performed naturally because your body wants to conform to the most advantageous ans stable position.

It not flat all the time, this is misleading, also you cannot be on your toes all time either. Also you are not always on at 90 degrees. It depends on your oponent, e.g if your oponent is a fast mover just being flat footed all time you will not be able to catch him, some one more experienced please advice. I like Tom Yankello as all coaches have different perspectives, otherwise all fighters would use the same style.
