Thank you, Kalani, this was very helpful to me, an amateur percussionist with no musical training. I feel comfortable in 4/4 and 6/8 but the African drumming groups I've studied under and performed with never ventured into odd meters. When you played congas to the 7/8 meter, Sade's rendition of Why Can't We Live Together came to mind. I've not thought of Sade as a band that ventured into odd meters. I'll try to see if I can't apply your lesson to that song to see if it is indeed an odd meter, and which odd meter, as a practice point. Oddly enough, and a bit sad, I even struggle with 3/4 since all my conga, bongo, and djembe and dunun lessons were in 4/4 or 6/8. Thanks again! Alex

Thanks Kalani! The Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers created many pieces in odd meters. The Dead even titled one song "The Eleven". 😄

I've played the Armenian Dances several times in concert band. Amazing piece but the part in alternating 5 is a nightmare!
