World Horse Welfare has taken in a group of horses from the remote Scottish island of Islay after their owners were struggling to care for them due to the economic climate and poor health, the decision to remove the horses was a preventative measure to ensure the horses did not become serious welfare cases. Once these horses have been fully rehabilitated, they will be rehomed through our Rehome a Horse Scheme find out more bit.ly/rjzZZs

Thrilled that the family cared enough to make the call for help. Horses could have been in much, much poorer condition.

At least the owner's knew there was a problem and cared enough to take action rather than letting the ponies starve.

These owners didn't wait until the ponies were skin and bones before calling. This is what other horse owners should do before their animals' condition is a problem.

A lot of barns, rescue centers etc, have a safety policy that helmets and protective gear must be worn at all times when working with and around the horses. It doesn't exactly mean that they are riding it is just policy. I know it seems really goofy, but safety rules are in place for a reason no matter how strange. LOL

An harmed horse may not be too trusting to humans. I for example allways wear protection when handeling a new horse or a cow for example. It's a security issue.

It's still a safety thing :) Horses can be unpredictable, and if you don't know a horse you can't be sure of how they will act around you. Where I learnt to ride you have to wear a helmet whenever you're with the horses, whether that be in the stable, the paddocks or the arena. It's a measure of safety in case you get nocked over or an accident happens that the helmet may be able to help with

I think that A. its to do with the fact that when hearding horses, especially mistreated or wild ones, there is quite a high chance that they will kick out at you in fear and kick your head, hense its essential to load any horse in hat, gloves (to stop them ripping your hands once you have caught one) and boots (to stop them breaking your foot when they tread on you) - its all in the pony club manual :p..... and B. that health and safety like it !

The horses they rescue have been neglected so severely that they would have trouble trusting humans around them, therefore would be very anxious and flighty. I imagine it's a safety precaution, and a very reasonable one at that.

@malfoy1988 it's probably health and safety cuz they don't know how the horses will react so they're just protecting themselves from any harm

They have to for health and safety (stupidley), though it does kinda make sense when many of the horses are wild/unpredictable/afraid, just removes some risk...

I think that the volunteers are wearing helmets because they are handling horses that are either super stressed and frightened or horses that have been in stalls for up to 6 months. Either of those situations can easily cause a horse to feel the need to kick out whether from fear or excitement. Not so silly when you figure in everything that most of these lovely rescues has been through:)

@malfoy1988 it's a safety precaution, we use them at the school I'm at when we're handling new horses incase they decide to knock us over, a few of us have been kicked in the head when picking out their feet but the hats stopped our skulls smashing

It's standard practice to wear a helmet when doing anything with a horse--riding, ground work, catching etc. This is especially true when you don't know the horses. I once had a friend who was kicked in the head by a spooking horse. Luckily she had her helmet, or she might be suffering from brain damage. She only ended up with a concussion

I would assume that because the horses may be unpredictable, the helmets are for safety reasons. Sick and horses in pain may lash out and kick etc I assume.

I think they are doing a really great job by helping all those horses. But after watching a few of their videos I started wondering about one thing. Why are there always women running around with helmets. I mean they aren't riding them since most of them are in a bad condition... I don't know anybody who is wearing one, just while handling horses. They wear them only while riding their horse. That includes me. ;-) Oh boy, I think I am thinking too much...

A lot of people who are handling "wild" horses will often wear helmets for protection, should the horse bash into them and knock them on the ground, into a wall, or etc.
