This is so painful to watch. My own pony was overweight when I got him as an 8 yr old. About 3 years in he came down with chronic laminitis and was diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome (type 2 diabetes) a few years later. I have gone to great effort to ensure he's kept in a place with a bark or sand paddock so he can safely be turned out, while carefully monitoring his diet and exercise. These measures have successfully gotten his weight down, and he's now comfortable and healthy at the age of 18. If you can't provide the care the horse needs, you shouldn't have it. Simple.

he should be in jail! In the US I believe he would have been. Can you imagine not being able to move without excrutiating pain? Watching your dead friend rotting next to you in the field. Attrocious! Laminitis can kill horses as the infection worsens. A horse, unlike a dog, cannot survive on 3 legs. Besides, all 4 feet were inflamed according to the report. In the wild horses run and play and that keeps the feet healthy. In human "care" they are kept in a controlled sized space. Also, horses have evolved to eat low quality food so this fresh green grass is too rich for their system. This horse should have been fed hay only until he healed, then limited to the amount of grass he can consume by controlling his access. It is horse 101 and anyone owning a horse should understand this. It is the responsibility of any animal owner to know how to properly care for that animal or they have no business possessing it. He should have rehomed them after his first encounter with this enforcement agency.

I would hardly call a field full of poisonous plants, rubbish, dirty water and no field shelter acceptable conditions for a horse. Those horses weren't thin, they were fat and one was laminitic on all four feet. The dead stallion's body would be contaminating the soil as it decomposed. Mr Ryder Large clearly was too proud to ask for help and advice, which would have been given by world horse welfare and information on how to carry out their advice. They could have helped with reducing the weight of the horses, fat scoring, laminitis prevention and many other field/stable management tips that would have negated the need for prosecution.

In my religion, animals have feelings and presence of mind, but not a soul, so they don't have an afterlife. So the idea that someone would hurt, abuse, or even kill an animal out of sadistic intention... how can you do that? You're not a psychopath, you're not literally incapable of feeling emotion. You did that knowing that it hurt those horses, and that's just evil. Disgusting.

Why can't the USA deal with people who neglect / abuse horses and get help from the World Horse Welfare. Our family has reported cases of abuse of animals and no one came to help. We need World Horse Welfare here. Seems Great Britain is more on the ball dealing with people who do not care for animals; and in fact abuse by neglecting: no shelter, no adequate water, not enough food and not appropriate food.!

Thank you so much to WHW, spca and the judge for bringing this man to justice and giving him the sentence he got. I wish it had been a ban on owning any animal but this was a great start. I cant wait for more animal abusers to get top sentencing in the future. It is a gift to have animals in your life. If you care for them they will take care of you. If you don't know exactly how that works then you shouldn't have that special gift.I hope these horses live a long happy, comfortable life.

I don't think he was mentally ill either. I also don't think he understood what was happening to his mare and what also might have happened to the stallion he had. Lots of people think if they are feeding and watering regularly, patching up the occasional injuries that's all that's required. He even said he fed them, they were all in good weight and in fact they were. He simply didn't know about founder (laminitis), the connection with rich forage and surely had not called in a vet. If he could not afford it, he should have called World Rescue and the RSPCA and asked for their help. That's where his fault was really- not seeking adequate farrier and veterinary care.

While I am very upset by what happened to the horses on the farm I'm not so sure the "Animal Police" are needed to go to everyone's farm to see how they care for their animals. It's an invasion of privacy for one thing. Better yet we enforce laws already on the books and ramp up the rescue facilities available for the unfortunate animals of the world. Owners selling to people need to be more certain the buyers can in fact care for the animal as well. That would go a long way to helping many. Don't sell just to unload an animal... be sure they can care for the horse, dog, whatever. I would be highly offended by anyone coming to just inspect my farm. I have nothing to hide but I don't need the government coming by to check on me.

Maybe a few of them were overweight but they look good, they were not thin, maybe few needed a diet but this is ridiculous they stole his horses! They should have monitored him and given him a chance to fix this issue with a few months diet they were not that overweight and the one that died could have had its stomach expand which happens when they die. Poor guy.

It isn't just the fact that they were overweight (which can be just as dangerous as being underweight). The farrier/vet had not been called for a very long time, one of them was suffering from severe laminitis, and he tried to cover up a dead horse with a tarp. They didn't steal the horses, they saved them.

What about the chestnut mare that had laminitis? He obviously did not feed them the correct food. It did not register to him that what was happening to his horses was wrong or indecent in any way. He DID eventually change his plead to guilty. The chestnut mare was obviously in a lot of pain and laminitis does not get to the stage overnight. There must have been time where he could have called a vet or farrier to examine the mare and possibly get her help at least. He did not have his horses stolen from him. He willingly gave them up by mistreating them in such a way. We are at a day and age where this type of cruelty is just unacceptable.
