One of my final days roaming around the streets of Dickwella included making a stop over at a local barber to get a street shave for $1. After that, I roamed around some of the streets and ended up in a cricket field where the cows had taken over the stadium. After, I take you guys with me back to my hotel to give you guys a tour of where I stayed the last 7 nights for about $45 per night.

For the shower curtain thing.... in countries like Canada where I grew up, our washrooms do not have drains and all the walls are made out of wood (North America at least). So, we must use a shower curtain to keep the water out of the washroom. In Sri Lanka (and also South and East Asia), buildings are made of concrete and they have drains built into the floor of the washrooms. So they can have that "open concept" bath tubs with no curtains.

By the way, "Wella" is Beach in Sinhala and "Dik" translates to Long. So Dikwella is literally "long beach". That probably explains your 30 to 40 minute walk along the beach. You have so many place names that end up with "wella" in Sri Lanka. "Kudawella" - Small (Kuda) Beach, "Suduwella" White (Sudu) Beach etc.

When I lived in Fiji I used to see the prison buses all the time. Those poor beggars with their shaved heads and striped uniforms......they used to be transported to work sites to "break rocks in the hot sun......" on the roadworks etc. I always used to wave and smile and it made their day ad they laughed and waved madly back at me....their prisons were really rough, unlike NZs luxury holiday camps.....no wonder they want to keep going back, lol.
