It was perfectly suited for its intended role...fighting off Soviet armor in the dense forests of Scandinavia, on narrow roads. Sure, some may term it more a tank DESTROYER than a true "tank", but it's largely a matter of interpretation. Picking off invading Soviet tanks was all the Swedes needed any sort of tank for, and this one was better suited for the job than the Centurions, which the Swedish army also bought.
@selfdo5 жыл бұрын
@Murat Gadjiev It's called DETERRENCE, Murat...of course, unless the Soviet Naval Infantry landed on the Swedish Baltic coast, and not necessarily having invaded Finland first (which would have otherwise given the Swedes ample warning), ferried MBTs on some sort of "Ro-Ro" ferrying craft out of Kronstadt, out the Gulf of Finland and across the Baltic enough to threaten something of value. Sure, the Naval Infantry would be using PT-76s, likely upgunned to the D5T 85mm weapon, and also landed some VVS (Airborne) and landed likewise some ASU-85 tank destroyers, but those AFVs would be easily picked off by Swedish infantry wielding "Carl Gustav" ATGMs. No matter the route that Soviet armor would have taken, the roads would have been narrow, with most if not all the surrounding terrain heavily forested and unsuitable to armored operations. So the Strv 103 could easily wipe out approaching Soviet armor as they'd be confined to these narrow roads.

One benefit the 103 had with its long Bofors main gun was that it could open fire long before the T55, T64 and T72 could because of its range and accuracy. This is why this tank was one of the first to use a laser range finder and ballistic calculator for precision hits. The fast auto loader made it possible to hit each target twice to inflict maximum damage before changing target. It was a complex machine for its time, built for one thing, stopping a numerical superior Soviet tank force at the border.
@selfdo5 жыл бұрын
The auto-loader design also facilitates bring rounds for the 105mm gun via an APC...i.e., by carrying them in the APC, and then backing up close to the back of the tank, a fair level of protection from artillery fire during reloading can be achieved. Kind of important when an empty tank is being refueled and resupplied under combat conditions.

The; engine, fuel, heavily sloped armour, and extra interior armor surrounding the crew makes it impossible to take them out from the front. Putting the ammo away from the crew keeps them from getting killed, in fact all modern tanks do this to an extent. They all store ammo in a large, easy to hit compartment just behind the gunner/commander in the turret with just a relatively thin piece of steel to protect the entire crew if the ammo gets hit. @InchonDM4 жыл бұрын
Whether something is considered a "tank" or a "tank destroyer/SPG" is entirely a question of role, and in their doctrine the Swedes definitely classified the Strv 103 as a main battle tank. The purpose of this thing was to engage Soviet T-64s and T-72s from defensive positions, since Sweden was not then and is currently not ruled by the burning desire to spread the fear of the Carolingeans into all of Europe--it comes and goes, give them another century or two and it'll be back. Anyway, this thing as designed would be a devastating defensive fighter, since as established during the Second World War the winner of a tank engagement is usually he who shoots first--and this thing is so incredibly hard to spot that combined with its role it would be almost guaranteed to do so.
@martinbredberg76162 жыл бұрын
@@InchonDM Yes, we always fired the first round. And the second, third - and mostly fourth and fifth too. And all was a hit and "total destruction" against T-54 -55 -62 -64 at any distance. On T-72 and T-80 you had to wait until you saw the scared eyes of the commander, if firing at the front. The extremely elaborate gun-sight of the 103 had a "battle tub", a square U that indicated, when filled with an approaching Russian tank it was "good to shoot" and expect a kill. No need to use the laser or mess with any distance. But the purpose of the tank was not defensive. We assumed a Russian attack, sure, but the armored forces should attack the bridgeheads, being airborne or by the seaRepel them before they got too strong. As you perhaps mentions, the Swedish mentality is always to attack. We will always be fewer in numbers, and the only way to win is to chose the time and place for a battle - which you can do only when you attack.

@martinbredberg76162 жыл бұрын
Probably more or less with any tank. If the hull is stuck, you can only shoot at what is not needed to shoot at anymore. What you miss is that when this old tank was introduced, no tank could shoot and hit while moving. They all had to stop to aim. I'd think think this tank would be pretty easy to get unstuck if not buried up to it's eyeballs. Lift up the tracks as high as possible. Stuff logs, etc, under the tracks. Lower the tracks, raising the chassis. Put more logs under the chassis. Raise tracks and and more logs. Lower tracks. Repeat as needed.

"how do we make a good tank?" "Eh just make it conform to the most basic definition of tank and slap an auto loader on it"

So the one we have isn't op. It needs a 3 second reload!!
@markky30506 жыл бұрын
I actually got my reload time down to 3.1 seconds or something on the test server. 4500 dpm. These stats could be entirely wrong if any math lurkers are here. This is just the numbers that spring to mind. It was either 4200 or 4500 dpm though.

Varför har han pansarnäven på bröstet?
@ZeroneAngel7 жыл бұрын

23:03- The Detroit 6V-53 is a V configuration, not inline, but I'd guess it was a slip of the tongue rather than a not knowing the difference. A 6-71T would have been the inline option, but it was bigger and likely wouldn't have fit.

Detroit also has a inline 6 cylinder 6-53.

What is he saying at 24:15? What are these two bars (pipes) for? English ain't my first language and I get tripped by Nicholas' Irish/American hybrid accent. Love this video and this is the most intriguing tank out there.
