Just adding some info. I am 1,85m long and was assigned commander in a 103C, and I didn't suffer at all due to the height. So, especially at the commanders place it is actually pretty comfy :-)

The gear ratio was slightly higher in reverse than forward, so it was technically faster going backwards. Reverse driving was not easy you needed the driver to use his elevation controls to depress the rear of the tank so the rear driver could see. But it was very handy for getting through snow, the S-tank in reverse could go through very easily as compared to forwards with the dozer blade in the way.

Welllllll. the driver of the Archer doesn't REALLY sit in the rear. He's in the normal position for a Valentine. Its just that the GUN is mounted towards the rear, and for some reason WG choose the direction of the gun to be Forward, which is why its slower going "forward" than in "reverse". I suppose they didn't want to confuse the kids who play.

The Germans made an armored car with 2 drivers one forward facing and one rear facing it mounted a 50mm in a rotating turret. It had 8 wheels with 8 wheel steering

It's amazing how well thought is everything. A tank operable by just one man, that's a true weapon. By the way, I think the lack of an interior heater is intentional, and a good idea. You don't want to spend time putting your winter coat back on if you have to go out of the tank during action.

My only (Very Minor !!) issue with this show is that it's broken up into parts. I'd gladly watch a 1 hour long single episode. But this time I'm having to wait for a part 3 !?!? A 1 & 2 is bad enough of a wait but come on... As I said it's a very minor issue. I was a U.S. Army Combat Medic. But growing up I loved tanks and helicopters. And I love this show. Keep up the great work !!

This is not a TD. (as a Swede i have to make sure everybody understands this ^^) Strv103C is classed as a MBT (IRL). Though im guessing you mean it as in your favorite vehicle with the "TD" Tag in World of Tanks so il give you a pass =P.

@Slayer Jesse They would not... What exactly makes it a TD? The fact that it has no Turret? Then what about the countless TDs with turrets? Dose that make them tanks instead of TDs? Its not what a Vehicle looks like or its paper specs that determines its designation (Tank/TD,Medium tank/Heavy tank etc) the designation is given based on its capabilities and the role its supposed to fill. And both the British and the Americans tested the Strv 103 against the MBTs they had in use at the time (Chieftain and M60) and found that other then the ability to fire on the move (Which those tanks could not do accurately at any kind of distance at the time anyway) it had no real disadvantages as a MBT and they also thought of it as a MBT and not a Tank Destroyer.

Very odd MBT indeed. I've always wondered what the inside of this looked like since I first saw it in a book around 2001. I started to wonder even more after getting the Strv S1 in WoT. Which, I would quess is very similar to the Strv 103 because it's a prototype of the production model. Very cool, thx Nick. Keep doing the Chieftain's hatch videos, I really enjoy them.

I’d say that having a heater would complicate the donning and doffing of winter clothing. Why waste time? You’re gonna want those winter clothes when you exit the tank, and if the tank is heated you’d need to shed your winter clothes.

The warning light is for when the diesel Engines stops the gyro that propel the small turret goes crazy, and you can get strangled by the wire. Thats is also the warnings signs. The later version has no Boeing it has caterpillar gasturbine, and Detroit diesel turbo diesel Engine. i lived in this for 12 month :-) AND I LOVED IT

Where was by the end of the cold war, plans to rebuild strv 103 so that it could be remote controled. However this was never done. If you had a crew that was well trained it would have been leathal for a enemy.

And some more info. Late versions were equipped with an ebersprächer heater, so no problems getting it warm enough on the inside.

This guy has the most interesting and educational tank videos on KZbin for sure, but he also has the WORST backing music of anyone on KZbin. He uses the same horrible repeating track for every video, I don't know why. The solution to this, after it drives you nuts, is to hit the mute button and go to "Subtitles". You can then read what he's saying instead. I wish he'd do something about this.

When I was a kid my parents got me a subscription to this service that sends you a binder and every month you'd get a packet of ...Pamphlets? I guess? That had images of tanks, planes, and helicopters and have all kinds of facts and stats on them to put in the binders. I remember I used to trace the tanks and planes which is how I learned to draw. I'd trace the outlines and then fill in the details by hand. But I remember this tank in particular took my fancy because of how SLEEK it is. Plus it's pretty easy to draw XD

The big red warning light is the BAIL OUT light... Giving if the tank was hit each person could turn it on.. Since in battle you may not be able to hear anything.

You had to be under a certain length to be designated as crew to the S-tank. The lack of space is of necesity to make the tank as small as possible. It didnt feel too bad to me. And im 177 cm. (i was a bit more fit back then too😑)

During the mentioning of the right warning light, the upper sign is too out of focus to be read accuratly, but the lower signs says: WARNING! If piston engine is stopped, the vehicle can not be decelerated/braked using the foot brake pedal. "USE THE HANDBRAKE"

The only real thing that could modernize this tank was if they found a stabilization system for the suspension allowing it to fire on the move. But that would be incredibly hard to do and would require a LOT of power.

It really is cramped in there for him, but in all fairness while this was designed it was intended to have a recruitment height limit of 5.6 feet, with a preferense to shorter then that, lots of crew men for it was 5.4 feet or so, so only semi short guys would actully operate it.

1.75 cm, or 5'9", was the demarcation between S-tank and Centurion crewmen in the Swedish Army. Seems kinda "tall", but the Swedes tend to be tall as Europeans go. I believe it was 5'4" or 5'5" for most Soviet "tankists", correct, at least in the T-54, T-55, T-62, T-64, T-72, T-80, and T-90 tanks?

If you read about it in Sweden they realised pretty quickly that there was a major drawback to the design due to thermal optics - you had to run the engine to traverse the gun which gave away its position..

As a Canadian, I think having to wear winter gear inside the tank isn't that bad, long as there is room inside the tank for you wearing the gear. If you need to bug out for whatever reason or drive open hatch, wearing your winter kit already is handy. In Canada often on long trips we need to take our winter coats off and throw them onto the back seats of our cars, which means if we roll down the window for whatever reason or stop and get out of the car we have to put our winter coat back on which is a little annoying. It would be worse if you have to bug out of your vehicle in an emergency as you are now outside the vehicle and your coat is in the back seat. For a tank it would be worse due to the explosive nature of tanks and how storage space for your winter gear when not wearing it could be an issue. If I was designing the tank for winter, I too would just limit the interior heating and tell crew to wear their parka.

No heater work's well in desert conditions, mostly because who in there right Minds would run the heater in those conditions. That plus winter gear when in cold weather, makes me wonder why tank even have heaters In the first place. I under stand AC but heaters are kind of pointless. The space that a heater takes up could be used for something to keep the crew comfortable in the cold like a coffee make or boiling vessel.

I think it is more for when you are in extreme weather. You don't need to keep the tank a nice room temperature(20c) but having a heater to bring the interior up to at least above or near freezing(0c) is good. Otherwise things can get uncomfortable, mainly in the feet and hands, more so if you are more or less just staying still in the tank. The tank has a lovely heat source while moving, being the engines, so why not have a heating system to use that heat from the engines. Being out of the winter wind helps, and being in an enclosed space with body heat will help too, but some sort heater is a must for some parts of the world, in Canada, the Nordic countries and Russia for sure.

I trained as a crewchief on a Bkan 1C back in teh 90's and we had a gunner during training whos farts smelled like burning acid. We actually had to use the emergency NBC ventilation system once XD
